A week spent in Krokos Villas was excellent( Olympic holidays, June 2008). The accomodation, a traditional cycladic house built into the cliff face. Ours was called Villa Rinio (Little Irene). Our cases were carried to and from the pick up point in Imerovigli centre. The accomodation was basic but kept spotless by our maid named Sonia who delivered an enormous breakfast to our table on the balcony every morning. Beyond the balcony overlooking the Caldera, was a drop of about 800ft to the sea giving uninterupted views of the cruise liners arriving in Thira.

Imerovigli escapes the worst excesses of the hordes from the cruise ships. Beware Estiatoria or Tavernas overlooking the Caldera you pay over the odds for the view as I discovered above the harbour in Thira! (26 euros for a cake ,a juice, a frappe and a water)

In imerovigli I recommend 2 eating places, a little Taverna opposite the main parking area called Anestis. The food is simple and taverna basic but I noted the young waiter, who has worked in London, was able to help diners unsure about dishes. No pressure to purchase anything and good plain food.

Across the road is Kappellinos, a pizzeria. This is more expensive but the service, size of portions and quality were the best I found on this holiday. While waiting to be picked up for the return flight, my wife and I were even given a glass of water as we stood waiting in the square.

There is one major downside to Santorini. If you have difficulty walking, especially up or down steps, you will find the island's old towns very taxing. There are no beaches on the caldera side of the island.

Imerovigli is one of the quieter villages bordering the Caldera, with a few restaurants and bars. A 20 mins stroll brings you to Fira if you are seeking some nightlife.

We were quite happy to spend the evenings on the veranda sipping ouzo or wine while taking in the sunset.
Vallais villa is in a great location for unrestricted views which must be among the best on the Island.
We stayed on a room only basis.

The rooms were very clean and tidy and could not fault it at all.
There is a kitchen with hob, fridge etc so doing breakfast or snacks is not a problem. The hotel is built into the cliff as are most of the hotels in this area so it would be unsuitable for young children or anyone with mobility problems.
The villa has no pool, however a sister hotel about 1km away is available if you feel the need for a dip.
The reception and cleaning staff were very friendly and happy to call a taxi for us to get to the airport.
So to sum up, it was a nice quiet place for a romantic vacation and we hope to return next year.

On arrival in Immerovigli ( a mere 15 mins transfer from the airport) we were met and greeted by Chris who carried our cases to the houses for us (here is a clue, the name is ";Ouranos Traditional Houses"; ie they are built into the side of the Caldera). We were warmly greeted by the manager Dora and told everything we needed to know about the facilities and so on.

We had a small private balcony with a table and chairs where we could sit out and eat lunch / have a glass of wine and this had a spectacular view. There was also a sunning area adjacent to the covered jacuzzi with mats provided or a large terrace for all the guests to enjoy just one level down, this had sun loungers and tables and chairs.
On the first day our toilet sprung a leak and it was fixed with minimum hassle, a simple phonecall to reception had Chris at our door to fix it immediately.

Breakfasts were served from the main coffee area although you could have them on your balcony and we were surprised to find that the majority of pastrys and cakes were made by Dora!
The rooms are cave like - this was the attraction for us - although we had plenty of space, there was a slightly damp smell to the room but being on the side of a cliff in a very humid environment we accepted it as one of those things - you cant have everything! We did mention this to Dora and she arranged for our sheets etc to be changed more often to try and limit this.

Our room was cleaned to perfection every day and all of the staff were friendly and helpful.
In my opinion this area is the best to stay in Santorini, you are in close proximity to most things and Fira is a 20 min walk away on a picturesque walk.

If you are after a beach holiday go to Kamari or Perissa (we did day trips to both on the bus for 1.10 euros) but if you want a picturesque postcard holiday go to the Caldera.
Likewise if you are after a hotel in the traditional sense, dont book traditional houses!

We wanted a quiet romantic holiday away from the touristy bustle and tourist traps, we got a it in bundles and with a fantastic view!

We stayed at the Imerovigli Palace in Imerovigli in September 2005. Imerovigli is a small village inbetween Fira the Capital and Oia.

The hotel has fabulous rooms and if at all possible book a suite. The suites have sunrise and sunset views and two balconies. The sunsets here are better than in Oia. Rooms are on a room only basis but breakfast was available at the poolside and was very reasonable(4euros) considering the breathtaking views. Eggs and bacon etc are at extra cost. Rooms had a fridge, sitting area and small bathroom. Beds are on mezzanine floor reached by a spiral staircase.

The pool area and grounds were clean and beautiful. Fred the owner of the hotel is very knowledgable and can book trips for you to the volcano and can recommend excellent tavernas that not expensive. He was very helpful and trustworthy and even gave some guests lifts to places save getting buses or taxis.

The only downside was the bar prices - way over the top.

The ";resort"; is ideally situated for a fantastic holiday. Imerovigli is quiet but extremely picturesque. Built on a cliff you can see the whole caldera. The views are breathtaking, words cannot describe what it was like sitting in a bar sipping drinks watching the sunset. The bars play chill-out music which just makes it perfect. Fira is only minutes away in a taxi (not expensive) and has a vast array of bars and clubs for a livlier night out. Oia is only a few minutes in a taxi in the opposite direction with plenty bars, cafes and restaurants.

A lovely restaurant to visit is the Bluenote in Imerovigli. Get there sharpish or book. Order prawn saganaki if you are a seafood lover.

I am a sandy beach lover but I didn't miss the sandy beaches at all. We visited the red beach for a day but didn't do the boat trip to the white beach. The red beach was beautiful and really unusual. It has a lovely beach taverna too.

We did the trip to the volcano and the hotsprings. The walk up to the top of the volcano was moderate in intensity (I'm far from fit). The hotsprings were great but dont wear an expensive white bikini or it will end up in the bin when you get home.

Visit Oia and get lost. Oia is a show piece!Oh and make suer you have plenty of film or an extra XD card!

I have no idea why anyone stays on the flat side of the island (Perissa / Kamari) It's madness! Stay in Fira / Fira-stephani / Imerovigli / Oia - They have the best views, best hotels, best food and best people.

found Sunny Villas whilst trawling the net looking for somewhere really special to stay on Santorini. The website was inviting but the reality was absolutely stunning!

Sunny Villas totally exceeded all expectations. After a hair raising walk with our luggage down a cliff, nothing prepared me for the standard of our accommodation. A cave house with the most amazing view of Skaros rock and the caldera of Santorini. We walked into this absolute gem of a house and never wanted to leave! Two bathrooms (heavenly with a 5 year old), a little kitchenette, beautiful furniture and the most amazing sitting room with the view to die for. We also had a small courtyard outside and a private terrace overlooking the Caldera.

Andreas and Michael the owners are fab and adored our 5 year old. They took extremely good care of us. Clean sheets and towels every day and everything kept spotlessly clean. The walk down the cliff to the pool was a bit of a killer but worth the walk. Not a place for the faint hearted and anyone who is even slightly infirm as there are steps everywhere!

We also found a lovely taverna - Taverna Imerovigli, great food at great prices. The staff are great, very friendly, especially if you have children, and they encourage to try out your Greek.

We would definitely recommend Sunny Villas in Imerovigli to anyone - especially if you are looking for a really romantic getaway. Just gorgeous.
