We have just returned from a fantastic week at Scorpios beach apartments. lovely large apartments kept very clean set in very nice settings. The staff were great especially George! they did everything to make your holiday special. We would recommend a car as buses really could'nt be trusted to arrive and the apartments are set in quiet area which is lovely for chilling out. DO NOT miss a trip to Thira, the setting sun is a special sight to see.

Just got back from a week on Santorini and it was fantastic!

My boyfriend and I stayed in the resort of Monolithos on the East coast. We booked through Teletext because we wanted a cheap getaway so we weren't expecting much. We were suprised and delighted by what we found! The apartment complex is gorgeous, built in keeping with the local architecture which is all white and blue and domed rooves. Our room was cleaned daily with clean bedding and towels. The whole place was very clean with a nice (if a bit small) pool and handy pool-side bar serving food. Our room was nice and big with a high ceiling so it was quite cool. The air conditioning didn't work, but we didn't mind as it wasn't so hot that we needed it. If we'd told them, the hotel people would have gone to look at it straight away. The shower was very good, not a useless trickle like you find sometimes.

A quiet road separates the apartments from the beach and there's a little mini-market just along the road. It's a very quiet resort with only a couple of restaurants, but I have to say that being right next to the airport means some noise from the planes. We didn't find it disturbing, but perhaps that's because we went off and about most of the time!

The island is very small but it's great because you get a feel of knowing it really well. We hired quad bikes for 5 out of 7 days and this was perfect for getting around. It did struggle a bit going up hills - often down to 15 km/hr - but at least we knew we were safe! You don't even have to slow for corners, it was so steady! It was easy to park which is important as parking can be hard to find, particularly in the main towns. You have to make sure you use your suncream before setting off though, as the breeze makes you forget you're out in the sun!

Besides car hire (pointless) and scooter hire (slightly more money for 2 people), the other option for transport is these little 2 seater go-kart/buggy things. They looked a lot of fun, very low down with wide wheel span so very stable. Not sure where you can get them but there might be a place along the road from Monolithos to Fira.

Santorini buses are good, there was an hourly bus from our apartments to Fira, the main town, and Kamari, the nearest big resort. It was 1 euro 20 per person per trip. The day we went looking for a quad to hire we planned to take the bus to Kamari but we missed it. It was ok though, the apartments have a mini bus that they run every hour on the hour, and even though we'd missed it by 5 minutes the owner called the driver and he took us anyway! it's more of a taxi than a minibus! It costs 2 euros 50 per person. In Kamari all the quads had been hired already (1pm) but we jumped on a bus to Fira and got a quad there straight away - there are so many hire places. Just goes to show that getting around is no problem, even to someone like me who's a bit scared of foreign buses!

I'm not sure I'd recommend Santorini for a family as I'm not sure there's enough to entertain kids for a week... We were off and about every day but by day 5 we'd run out of things to see and do so we ended up on the beach just laying in the sun. The sea isn't great for small children as it gets deep very quickly and the beaches are stony. The water park only has 3 slides, 2 of which are the same! It does have a pretty fun looking kids' pool and is only 7euros to get in but it's too small to spend a day there. Other than that, I'm not sure what else there is to keep kids busy! Unless they're into nice views and stuff!
