"Sweetheart Studios review"
Overall Hotel Rating:
We stayed at the Sweetheart studios in Kamari. Nicolena, the owner, was lovely and smiled a lot when her English failed her. The whole family ran the place together, and lived on site; it made us feel like we were real guests and not just another bunch of Brits on holiday. The studios are about 10 minutes from the resort centre which was an ideal location. They were very typically Greek - i.e. basic but clean. The bathroom was also typically Greek! Do make sure you take a kettle as there was a pot for boiling water for tea but it was a bit grotty and it took an age to boil.
The resort was lovely - very cosmopolitan - no fish n chip shops, union jack shorts or karaoke - which was exactly the way we like it. Generally the tavernas were better than the restaurants - our favourite was called Semelli. Try the mixed appetisers and the house wine!
The beach was a bit of a disappointment - go to the top end by the mountain, the sunbeds are more expensive but that's because the beach is much nicer there.
We went in May and it was cold some days - and freezing every night! Don't just take a sweater - take a jacket. I had to buy a fleece whilst I was there!
We hired a jeep one day but in hindsight we were much better off using the buses. Despite what the rep said, we found them to be extremely reliable, cheap and safe.
We saw most of what there was to see on the island - but our favourite was Ia. We ate at Strogili restaurant and got an unrestricted view of the sunset - absolutely not to be missed.
We went to Akrotiri which I have to say was a bit of a disappointment - but it would have been even more so had we not gone to the museum in Thira which held all the artefacts that were found on site. Had we just been to the excavation, it wouldn't have made much sense.
All in all, a fantastic holiday. We completely fell in love with the island - and we will be going back in a few years' time.
