Just got back from 2 weeks staying at the Myrtia and have already got quotes to go back next year. We stayed in a 1 bedroom apartment, which was basic but comfortable, cleaned most days and towels changed twice a week. Hot water is generated by solar so if you are late going up for a shower after a days sunbathing you will more than likely get a cold one, however we did not let this spoil it, we got used to cold/luke warm showers. In August the Air Con is a must although it was cooler outside at night the rooms were very warm. The complex is lovely and the small team that run it are great. Big thanks to Vangelis who is the manager of the site - he helped me out when my son needed to see a dentist whilst we were there. Spiros runs the restaurant and bar along with barman Vlatko(not sure of spelling)they are both great, nothing too much for them. Spiros has two lovely sons Leo and Biel who made friends with all the kids on site. 40 people on our coach were staying at the Myrtia and its only small, this meant that you get to know everyone and all the kids play together, the only down side to this is when they have to say goodbye at the airport. Food at the Myrtia is lovely, and reasonably priced as well, we tried lots of other restaurants but none of them beat Myrtia's food. Overall we thought it was a lovely complex, small but everything there that you need. One complaint though is that there is a complex just next door, run by Olympic Holidays which is not as nice as Myrtia and a lot cheaper to stay at, you find that some of the residents from there gatecrash Myrtia pool which makes it a lot busier than it would be with just its own guests and they hog the sunbeds. Overall its great and we would go back, oh and dont let reviews saying there are loads of wasps put you off, there are a few but they dont bother you. The ones in the UK are worse. You will be dropped of the coach at the top of a track which takes about 5-10 mins to walk down - dont let this put you off its quite a nice walk through the trees and you soon get used to it. Take a torch at night though as its too dark without really. Nearest supermarket at top of track stocks everything you need and you can change travellers cheques there as well at a cost of 2 euros per cheque (take your passport for this, they a bit funny without it).

Koukounaries is by far the best resort in Skiathos, the beach is absolutely lovely with warm clear sea water. With this in mind there are regular drop off from boat trips which makes is quite a busy beach. My advice on this is to go earlier in the day as th...

We have just returned from our second visit to the Myrtia and had a perfect holiday.

We were concerned before arrival as we had heard about a fire which caused damage in Ag. Paraskevi (which is only a few miles up the road). However, we contacted the Myrtia and were assured that all was ok with Koukounaries.

We were relieved to find out that although you could see quite a large area of fire damage on the way to and from Skiathos Town, the fire had not affected Myrtia or immediate area at all and the scenery was still as beautiful as we remembered it from out last visit.

The accommodation is basic but very clean and was completely suitable for our needs. We did pay for air conditioning and as the temperature reached between 30 and 47 degrees during the day so it was needed and worked perfectly. You do need a torch to get from the Myrtia to the road as it is very dark and uneven.

The bar and restaurant staff are absolutely fantastic and really try to make it a great holiday. Although it is quite a smallish complex, there are excellent facilities with a bar, restaurant, swimming pool, ping-pong table and tennis courts (all the sports are free and you can borrow the equipment from behind the bar).

If you feel energetic, Vlatco organises weekly tennis and football competitions (both for adults and children) which are really great fun but you are never pressurised to take part if you just want to chill around the pool etc.

The beach at Koukounaries is lovely, although it can get busy when tour boats pull in, and there is a nature conservation area behind the beach which is really pretty and is definitely worth a walk around.

We hired a speedboat at Koukounaries which was brilliant and meant that we could go to some deserted beaches and tavernas which are only accessible by boat. We enjoyed it so much that we actually booked the boat for two days and these were definitely the best days we had.

We did go on two Thomas Cook organised trips. The first was the moonlight and music where you have a bbq on the boat with live Greek music. We really enjoyed it and the music was lovely although my children (aged 12 and 15) found it a bit boring. The second trip was the Island Hopper which took you to Alonisis and Skopolos. This was a nice trip but you can probably book better and cheaper trips from the numerous boats which leave the Skiathos dock.

There are some nice restaurants local to the Myrtia and our favourite was one which just had a sign which stated 'restaurant' which from the road looks like a bit like a runway as it has ball lights leading to the door. The grounds looks a bit unkept but the food is excellent and reasonable.

The Myrtia food is also very good and we had a great time at the Sunday Greek Barbecue night where everyone got up and had a go at the Greek dancing.

We did eat at the famous Windmill restaurant in Skiathos Town which is placed right at the very top of Skiathos and the views are breathtaking. I was not overlly impressed with the food at the Windmill especially as it was expensive but the views definitely compensated. Ensure that you book as the Windmill does get full every night!

I guess the only very slight downside was that there did seem to be quite a few wasps around the Myrtia and Skiathos but if you look at how green the island is, I guess it is to be expected.

All in all, we had a fantastic time and would definitely recommend the Myrtia (especially to families with either young children or teenagers).

If you want a basic, relaxing holiday then I do not think that you could go wrong with the Myrtia!

Just got back from two weeks at the Myrtia. This was our third time at Myrtia and we all agreed that this was the best time we have had. The weather was fantastic. Skiathos is such a beautiful island. The people are so friendly. Self catering accommodation with air conditioning optional. Clean and tidy with regular maid service. Myrtia is not for the 18-30 type holiday but more for farmilies.

It is a small complex built around a lovely swimming pool and bar. The children had a great time running around and felt completely safe there. The food at the complex is brilliant, better than you will find on most of the island; the meatballs were delicious. Spiros is excellent at managing the bar and restaurant, he is so friendly and cannot do enough for you.

The Myrita is set back in the middle of a pine forest, a 10 min walk from the main road, along a dirt track and it is handy to have a torch for the walk back of a night. Even better is to switch off the torch and look up at all the stars, there are so many. We walked the dogs from the Skiathos Dog Shelter, they were all lovely and it was hard to leave them behind. It was a trip the children enjoyed enormously and we ended up going back twice. In town we recommend a visit to the open air cinema, it was very basic but brilliant to sit there and see all the stars and birds flying around overhead. Hot dogs, popcorn, beer and bottles of wine are available to enjoy while watching the film. If you have a family, you cannot go wrong with the Myrtia. In the immortal words of Arnie, ";I'll be back!";

The Myrtia Apartments were in land up a very long dirt track, so no sea views and a 25 minute walk to the beach via fields (which wasn't unpleasant). The beach was in a beautiful setting, but loads of people from boat trips landed on the beach every day and there wasn't enough room, which meant that they sat behind or infront of your sun lounger - too cramped!

Due to being located near to a nature 'swamp' reserve there were loads of mosquitoes and we had 50 bites on one night in total between us!

The Apartments were very average, but kept clean in terms of bedding etc. The room had loads of insects and cocoons which were never cleaned away and been there for years. The grounds to the apartments were nice and as was the pool. We had problems with our fridge and the room decor in general needed updating.

The owners seemed to prefer families rather than young couples. We ate in the restaurant once and it was very average.

The walk at night to the apartments from the village was terrifying, it was pitch black, past a camp site and a torch couldn't ease the nerves. It was scary to say the least.

We wouldn't go back again top these apartments, very average. .

What can I say....The best holiday ever!

We were a party of 10 (6 adults, 4 children aged 4,7,7,9. The coach dropped us off at the end of the track which leads down to the complex, where we were greeted by the lovely Ramona and Achilles who ferried us all down the track in a minibus. From the minute we arrived I knew I was going to love this place! It is not huge, only 44 apartments I think, but set in beautiful surroundings and had a wonderfully relaxed but fun atmosphere both day and night. The rooms were basic but clean and in good repair. Considering that for the majority of the holiday we used our room only for showering and sleeping, they were perfectly adequate. The apartments are owned/run by alex, myrtia and their baby son. We didn't have much contact with them to be honest but they were very pleasant and accomodating when we did.

The pool bar and taverna are run by Ramona, Achilles, Ninyo (the dog)and their nephew Lorenzo (oh yeah!)who were all fabulous. Of an evening the pool bar does not have a closing time. Lorenzo will stay up and serve you until you have had enough I lost count of how many bottles of metaxa Lorenzo and I emptied between us! Despite this you will not hear any noise late at night from the bar. Our room was right next to the pool, and most nights we were in bed before midnight as the children were tired, and we never heard a thing! I read a review on this site which felt that they were not child friendly and were more interested in taking your money. I totally disagree with this. We had 4 children in our party and there were many more staying there also, and we found them to be perfectly charming and very accommodating with adults and children alike.

My husband celebrated his birthday 3 days after we arrived. After a quiet word with Ramona and Achilles on our first day, they organised a huge birthday cake which we surprised my husband with after our meal. For the majority of the time we had our evening meal at the taverna on site which was absolutely fabulous! The best yemista I have ever tasted, and the pizza's are to die for! The prices were a little steep compared to other holidays but then you get what you pay for. We tried 3 or 4 other restaurants in koukounaries and they were not a patch on the taverna on site, hence why we tended to stay and eat there. The chinese/indian was very nice and fast service too. Further down the road past the second supermarket there is a place set back a little with a green picket fence (sorry can't remember the name)which does some lovely pasta dishes, however some other members of the group were a little disappointed with their meals here.

Most importantly, would not recommend the Big Bad Wolf! It was absolutely diabolical. We were waited on by a girl who barely acknowledged us, let alone smile! It took ten minutes and 2 reminders to get butter for the bread. Three members of our group ordered tuna salads. These consisted of a sprinkling of lettuce, a bit of cucumber, and 1 tomato chopped, smothered in some vile tasting 'salad creme' type dressing, not even mayonnaise. This was clearly to disguise the distinct lack of tuna underneath it. They forgot part of our order for one of the children and after waiting 20 minutes and reminding them twice we paid the bill and left in disgust. For some reason it always looks busy and seems to be full of Greeks, but don't be fooled. Everyone we spoke to about it agreed with us that is was awful. When we told Lorenzo at the pool bar that we had been and it was terrible, he laughed and said that very few people went back a second time.

Sunday night is BBQ/Greek night. This costs 15 euro's for adults, half price for children aged 5-12(under 5's free), and half price for vegetarians (me). It was excellent and very good value. There is no need to rush to the front of the queue when the food is ready as it does not run out. There was loads of meat, chicken, sausages, pork, bifteki and a table full of salads, potato salad, baked potatoes, feta, bread, tzatziki, taramosalata, dolmades etc. As soon as one dish is emptied, another full one is brought out. To be honest, there was so much food it's lucky I don't eat meat because I don't think I could have fitted it in! The greek dancers were brilliant, watch out for Achilles setting the floor alight! Don't worry, it adds to the atmosphere.

All in all we had the most wonderful holiday. Sun,good food, lovely atmosphere, fantastic people (staff and families alike, you know who you all are, hi to all!) Everybody got to know everybody, all the children played together in one big group. It was just wonderful. If you haven't booked already, you should, you will not be disappointed.
