Another lovely stay in July. Have to confess that we hired a jeep and so didn't spend much time around the apartments this time. When we did, it was just as good as our last stay 2 years ago. A very warm welcome again from Carol and Vassilis. (Utter nonsense to say that you only get a warm welcome if you are repeat visitors - we did last time and that was our first time) A little bit of research would tell you that the studios are very quiet and as they only sleep 2 are not really designed for families. One reason why we chose it. Had a few adventures in the jeep in the mountains on and off track, found some fabulous deserted beaches. Just devastated to hear that this may well have been our last trip to Thassos to the Aberdeen Studios with the demise of Kosmar and XL.

Limenaria beach is a mixture of sand and shingle, with a lot of pebbles which are hard on the feet. There are lots of sea-urchins too, so it's worth investing in some beach shoes to wear while swimming to avoid incidents. The beach was filthy though - litter and cigarette ends everywhere. You can't blame the locals for the tourists being too lazy to use the bins, but it would have been nicer if the beach was cleaned every night.

There are several restaurants and tavernas in the resort, which is spread out along the sea front, so there's plenty of choice. There were lots of Greeks holidaying - this is not a very "British" resort and you won't find roast dinners, Chinese restaurants or curry houses - it's good Greek food, mainly fish, with pasta and pizza too. There is not much choice for vegetarians though, no briam or spanakopita, no hummus - mainly your options are tomato pasta, giant beans or omelette. The food was all great, but be warned that they don't really get the concept of starters and main courses - you'll be just starting on your starter and your main course will arrive. Prices aren't too bad - 4-10 euros for a main course, depending what it is, and less than 10 euros for a bottle of wine.

There are several bars and a couple of discos which seemed very loud and full of teenagers - we didn't investigate further. There are plenty of excursions available - day trips by boat, walking the gorge, shopping trips to Thassos town etc, but Limenaria is ideal for people who want to spend two weeks on a lounger working on their tan with the occasional dip in the beautiful turquoise sea.

Christos Apartments are in an excellent location, only a few metres from the beach. It's a small complex with a small pool and a few sun loungers within the complex, but there are plenty of free loungers on the beach right in front of the apartments....

Christos Apartments are in an excellent location, only a few metres from the beach. It's a small complex with a small pool and a few sun loungers within the complex, but there are plenty of free loungers on the beach right in front of the apartments.

The apartment we were in was small and basic - beds, balcony, table and chairs, wardrobe and some drawers. The kitchen had a fridge with icebox, two electric rings, sink and some crockery and cutlery. The room had a hairdryer, and air-con was available although we didn't use it. There are no safety-deposit boxes in the block and I think the nearest were in the post office.

The apartments are a 5 minute walk from the resort centre - close enough to be very easy to get to, but not so close that you're disturbed by noise.

Cleaning of the apartments was poor. Toilet paper was provided, which is unusual in Greek apartments; usually you have to buy your own. Sheets were changed once a week and towels 2-3 times a week. Bins were emptied when the towels were changed, which isn't enough - in Greece toilet paper is put into bins, and bathroom bins should really be emptied every day. The apartment was not cleaned at all during our stay though - it had been cleaned when we arrived, it was cleaned after we left, but not at all while we were there, so the floors got sandier and the bathroom got mankier. Maintenance seemed a bit haphazard as well - we were on the top floor and the lightbulb at the top of the stairs was broken so we were going up and down stairs in the dark at night. We reported it several times and nothing was done, it just wasn't taken seriously. On the other hand, I needed to borrow a pair of pliers to repair a damaged suitcase, and they were produced almost instantly.

The water supply was a bit variable. On our first two nights it ran out altogether when we were showering - I was standing in the shower all shampooed up and dripping wet when the water went off altogether and all I could do was stand and wait for it to come back on. Over time we realised that the water could be a bit dodgy if there was a lot of demand at once, so we began not showering until after 9, which worked better. It was too hot to eat early, anyway, so it wasn't a problem.

The cleaning and the water were the only problems with these apartments. In all other respects, they were ideal - wonderful location, friendly staff, great food in the bar at reasonable prices, and "waiter" service on the loungers at the beach

We stayed at these very comfortable studios in july/august 2008.They are situated a short walk from the port/harbour where the general bustle of tavernas, shops are placed. The town beach was about 10 minutes away and had everything you could wish for,but it's a good idea to hire a car and explore the island ,which we did...you only need car for a couple of days as the island is fairly small. Also the best transfer ever, we didn't see our luggage from placing it at pick up point at the airport until we arrived at the studios, after a very pleasant ferry ride of about 40 minutes...same on return.Brilliant place if you fancy getting away from the crowds, as the studios have little to attract families with children. One disappointment was the family of cats and kittens which the local people do not seem to like...we managed to feed them every day and they became quite friendly.Wish the locals could organize a neutering scheme if they think the cats are a problem....

Zako apartments are a great base to stay at during a holiday to Thassos. The whole family is absolutely fantastic. Paniota, mama works non stop to make delicious food and make you comfortable as well as cleaning and keeping the grounds ship shape. Costas, papa cooks a fab BBQ on monday night, which just keeps coming and then plays the bazouki. It's a great night lots of food, drink and party games! George is the person to see if you want a bike to get round the island, which is a must as there are beautiful coastal areas and mountain villages full of character. Themis is an absolute star and good friend while we were there. Doesn't usually see the mornings but when he arrives at the bar the mythos just keeps on flowing! You can be assured of a brilliant holiday if you decide to stay at Zako.

A few tips on Thassos; Do hire a car and visit the many lovely beaches such as Paradise, Trypiti, Golden and Pefkari.Make sure you get to Paradise early as it gets very very busy. Do take the taxi boat to Golden Beach (approx 1.5 hours) and treat as a mini boat trip. Do go to Muses, Twins and Simi for dinner (especially spaghetti with shrimp in Twins !!) Do go for a lovely ice cream in the Ice Cream Parlour near the dodgem cars (the reason I put on 6 lbs!!) Do get a jam doughnut from the bakery over the road from the hotel (another reason I put on 6 lbs!) Do have a vanilla milk shake from Heidi in the snack bar (yet another reason I put on 6 lbs!) Do go on the Castaway boat trip but book it with Eros in the old harbour (cheaper than Kosmar) Do buy 2 cheap umbrellas for only 4 euros each as you can stop at any of the small beaches, even if there are no sunbeds) Do buy a snorkel and mask as there are loads of fish to see, especially right on the shore line at Trypiti Do visit Panagia as it is a lovely inland village Don't bother going up in the mountains unless you want to take 3 hours trying to find a road, every bone in your body rattles driving over the boulders and when you get to Kastro it is shut!! The lake is fenced off and is not much to look at (we live 20 minutes from Snowdonia so we know about lakes!) Don't go to Thassos town beach as it is like a builders yard with cigarette butts Don't go on the Town and Country trip with Kosmar. The market was the tackiest I have seen, the Nesta Gorge was beautiful and the town, was well, a town !! Don't go to Makrymmos beach if you are want a sunbed as we were told we could not have one in 38c with a child, so we paid 5 euros to go back to Thassos ( it was August so it is maybe ok when not in high season) Don't go expecting the usual friendly Greeks because they were not, but this was maybe because a lot of the waiters were Eastern Europeans, being that Bulgaria is only about 150 miles away.I must stress however that the staff in the hotel were lovely, especially Kosta on reception and Heidi in the snack bar, bless her! To recap, if you want a week in the sun, by a nice pool then stay at this hotel. If you want a 2 week holiday you must hire a car or you will die of boredom but you can still stay at this lovely hotel and have it all.

Lovely hotel with a fabulous pool area. Air conditioning was so good we woke up in the middle of the night too cold so well worth the 6 euros a night. The breakfast was basic which does not bother me but hubby and daughter went to Rumours for a full Engis...

Lovely hotel with a fabulous pool area. Air conditioning was so good we woke up in the middle of the night too cold so well worth the 6 euros a night. The breakfast was basic which does not bother me but hubby and daughter went to Rumours for a full Engish a few times to make up for it. The best two things about this hotel are the proximity to Thassos town (a 5 minute walk to the front) and the pool area (better than any we saw during the 'drop offs'. Nice balcony which is very private from next door Shower cubicle is better than the norm in Greece. The pool bar does not have an extensive menu but we were only there abou 4 days of our entire holiday so we made do with pizza, toasties and chips If you are looking for anything more than low key then this is not the hotel for you. No entertainment, no loud music, no late night bevvies with other guests, just peace and quiet which even my 9 yr old liked. There is not much more to say about the hotel as it was just so low key. Every one we spoke said that if they returned to Thassos they would stay at the Aethria again.

I last went to Thassos 15 years ago. It has changed. But not too much! The town is about double the size it was and it has extended to the east (it cant really go west due to the extensive archeaological remains - well worth a visit) with a new ferry 'port' and landfill car park. The old one is now car parking for the town. Car parking is needed I suppose, but not very picturesque.

The restaurants have changed too.. Zorba's has closed with its live music, and now moved to the town centre, where it is more of a tourist trap. not recommended. Syrtaki is good - on the beach. very recommended Karavagio (I think) - is new on the headland by the church. Limited menu but highly recommended for a simple lunch on the terrace facing the sea. (Visit the church while you are there - there has been one there for hundreds of years) Thassian - recommended - good quantity and quality and friendly too!

Hire a car - go to Aliki and visit the Beautiful Alice restaurant (the menu hasnt changed for 15 years but the prices have)- and more ruins.

Find of the holiday was the village of Theologos - dont know the restaurant name but go through the village - past the bus stopping square - there is a vine growing across the road, and the restaurant is on the right. Great views, good local cheap food (the best and cheapest we had the whole holiday). Very greek clientele.

Still think Thassos is great but will not go in high season again - it was too hot for exploring during the day!

Very clean - very hot (so the 6euro a night for air conditioning was very necessary). Played tennis in the early morning, swam during the day. Pool bar was basic but good, so wouldn't expect extensive menu. Salads / pizza etc reasonably priced. Good locatio...

Thassos has everything for everyone for all age groups. An ideal place for the family get away or a great trip with friends. The town has all you need from shops, cafes, bar and restaurants. Along with some good clubs that stay open to almost sunrise! The rest of the island also has a lot more than beaches to see, with great views and history. A must has to be the Thassian Restaurant in Thassos town – with the lovely staff and free coffee and cake...what else could you ask for!

Very nice staff and friendly guest.
