Thassos Town is lovely. Plenty of tavernas and snack bars to keep everyone happy. In particular I must mention the Thassian. It was the only taverna we particularly wanted to return to.

Beware of the wasps. Mosquitoes proved no problem for us in September, but the wasps were out in force!

Do hire a car for at least a few days and get to see the rest of the island; its not that big! With one good main road that circles the entire island it is difficult to get lost. We visited most places of interest during our week there, the only ones that defeated us were Kastro and the Lake in the Mountains, as these really require something more robust than the Hyundai Atos we had.

Would we go back? Although we loved Thassos, for us a week was enough to see everything we wanted to. Its a beautiful island with plenty to cater for all tastes. Culture for those who enjoy Greek ruins, and bars aplenty for those who prefer to get ruined! Highlights for us were the mountain village of Panagia where we ate roast goat in the taverna in the square, and the beautiful Golden beach nearby.

We booked the Aberdeen Studios in particular solely on the strength of the reviews on this website. In the main we were not disappointed.

Carol was there to meet us off the transfer coach and show us to our studio. As luck would have it (or not!) we were shown to Studio No.1 which is nearest to the main road and the junction taking the lorries from the marble quarry down to the harbour! As these lorries start reaching the ferry at about 0630 there were no long lay-ins in the morning!

However, the studio was small, but adequate for a week or two, containing everything necessary for very simple self-catering. Dont expect to cook anything more than a fry-up or pasta. It was very clean and the owners had thoughtfully provided insect screens on the kitchen and bathroom windows so we could have these open at night with no fear of being bitten to pieces. There is aircon but in September we did not need it on.

The Kosmar brochure/website advertised the complex as being a 15 minute stroll to the town centre. More like 20 minutes and its uphill on the way back! Also, I know we travelled late in the season when places were starting to shut down but we could not locate the taverna just 100m away.

The pool area was lovely with plenty of sunbeds to go round and the pool bar open for drinks and snacks. The week we were there the pool was very cold, only warming up towards the middle of the week: very bracing!

We didnt make use of the pool bar at nights, but talking to others who did, a fun time can be had by all! Carols husband, Vassilis, is a one-off and although we only met him a few times, I would like to return to get to know them better.

The Aphroditi Studios were in a nice central location only 200 metres from the glorious sandy beach. The mini market and a good selection of tavernas were close by. The rooms are a reasonable and simply furnished and they were cleaned regularly. There was also television lounge if you wanted to use it. We found the transfer to Golden Beach rather a chore and it took the best part of 3 hours from boarding the coach on the mainland at Kavala. You then had to take a 45 minute ferry journey and we waited 30 minutes for the ferry to arrive and finally another coach transfer to the resort.

Golden beach has white sands and shelves gently into to the sea and is beautiful. However we were plagued by wasps during our visit and we found this aspect a little unpleasant, especially as we were stung several times. This is reason we marked our holiday as only average. We understand this been an increasing problem over the past few years and would be the main reason for us not returning. You can get a bus into Thassos town 6 times a day and it is well worth doing especially if you want any gifts to take home.

Very much a couples resort although being school holiday times sometimes there was an abundance of Greek children on the beach. They disappeared in the evening.

We'd say Skala Potamia can be a really excellent venue depending upon which part of the beach you are situated. We were staying at the Nefeli which is middle of the bay and the beach there had a few stones at the edge which kept the crowds away despite the sand being beautiful 2 metres out which suited us fine. However, the resort was extremely busy at both ends and the busier of the two ends was far too commercialised for our liking (ref the unslightly dodgems on the seafront). Think the resort is in danger of overdoing it if it's not careful.

The sea was wonderfully clean and clear though as was our accomodation which was basic but clean and modern and really close to the sea.

We hired a very competitively priced jeep from Speedys whom I wouldn't recommend as we sure got what we paid for, it was well knackered (too uncomfortable to drive) and attracted the attention of the police in Thassos town! Subsequently hired a smaller vehicle from Potos who were excellent all round.

We went on a couple of trips organised through Thomson, Macedonian experience and Sunshine Cruise (Thomson were excellent by the way) but without really enjoying them. They were quite expensive and we didn't really know enough about them prior to booking. Our fault for not checking how much travelling was actually involved but the details we were given were at best sketchy and at worst inaccurate.

Travelled round the island a fair bit and contrary to a lot of what I've read here we thought the island more commercialised than we expected/hoped for. Thassos town though was a really nice place with good atmosphere. In fact we didn't find anything better than Skala Potamia where fortunately the wasps wern't as much as a problem as we experienced elsewhere. By the way if they hassle you too much tell the waiters to light up some coffee as it really does the trick.

No shortage of good restaurants especially our favourite the ";Green Sea"; and the cusine was certainly improved from our last visit to Greece some 4 years ago but we did notice the prices were not as cheap as they used to be. Perhaps we eat a lot as evening meals for 4 ranged between 50-80 Euros!

Finally a word of warning about some of the sharp practices of a few of the local proprietors. We really got fleeced on the first day when my children bought an inflatable for 45 Euros from the Grand Market (next to Flisvos restaurant). Later found them for 15 further down the road. Subsequently found the owner has a bit of a reputation (see other comments on this site. Another tourist had been charged 6 Euro for 6 bread rolls! Also spent a fantastic ";Greek night"; at the Alkioni.Entertainment, food and wine were superb so we returned the following week. We thought we had established a good rapport with the Taverna owner who seemed genuinely pleased to see us back. However, end of the evening he spoilt it all by attempting to withold our change hoping we were too well oiled to notice. We had to really stick to our guns to get it back which soured the whole experience. Ironic thing is that we'd have probably left it all as a tip anyway as we'd had 2 really excellent evenings. We've been to Greece many times and never come across this type of thing before and it was very disappointing.

Know it probably doesn't stack up with what I've said but don't get me wrong the holiday was on balance still very good yet in our opinion there are more traditional unspoilt islands than Thassos out there and we will not be returning.

This was our first time in Thassos and indeed anywhere in Greece. The journey went like clockwork and the ferry crossing to Thassos Island was wonderful (and I don't like boats)!

Although basic the studios were spotless clean and had maid service 6 times a week. They were set in a residential area and only a very short walk from the town and all its amemities. There is a small pool and ample sunbeds at the Finekes if you want to chill. Just beware that siesta time is 3pm-5pm and noise must be kept to an absolute minimum even with regards to no splashing in the pool. Minor detail unless you've got young children though. Air conditioning was available for a small charge and I would recommend it in high season. Vaso, the owner was on hand every day to sort out any problems or queries and was very helpful with her knowledge of the island. This was useful because the Thomson rep when asked appeared to have very little knowledge of the island.

Thassos town itself had a good selection of shops, a lovely promenade, very clean beach and excellent eating places. Our favourites were The Twins (which was owned by Vaso's husband), Pigi's and The Zodiac. All eateries offered exceptional value for money. There was lots of beach front cafes and bars that provided great hospitality. Without doubt on this holiday we were taken aback by the friendliness of everyone!

We explored the island by both car and bus. The bus service is excellent, easy to use and reasonably priced. A great way to get about.

Pachis beach was our favourite, just idyllic and only a short way from Thassos Town. Pefkari beach was excellent for watersports. Golden Beach was ok but very popular with tourists so a lot busier than the others we visited.

We visited a local market in Prinos but nothing to rave about. A lovely village to stop off at is Potamis. Again very friendly locals and a quaint place to explore.

Would we go back? The answer has to be yes - one day. A wonderful island where you can't fail to relax and unwind.

Truly wonderful. Both Skala Rahoni and the Mediterranean Apartments were fantastic. Very quiet and relaxing and being right there on the beach was bliss. Both staff and fellow guests were lovely and we got the impression that a lot of people returned to these apartments each year. In fact, we were told that one couple love it so much in Rahoni that they are moving there permanently, getting jobs on the island as the driver of a truck which emptys the septic tank(of all things!)

It was possibly our best holiday so far and we have been to Greece many times.

To reach the resort of Golden Beach it takes two coaches journeys and a ferry crossing. The transfer time was in excess of 3 hours.

The Bay Hotel is situated at the far Eastern end of the resort is up a long hill and is somewhere between a gradual and steep climb. In the heat of the day it really was a struggle and put us off. The rooms were alright and they gave you the usual standard equipment. Quite honestly they were nothing to write home about and the location for us was far from ideal. To be fair there were some wonderful views from the hotel due to its elevated position in the resort.

The beach was nice but quite crowded down our end of the resort. However if you were prepared to walk about a mile you could find a quiet section of the beach. The tavernas were mixed Sotis being our favourite and Federas the worse. Also Vigilis put on live entertainment over the weekend and was certainly worth a visit. A minimum number of shops and a bus route which ran infrequently to Thassos Town 6 times a day.

Our overall impression of our holiday was fair. It may have been different if we had other accommodation in the flatter part and middle part of the resort. One of point that put us off was the incredible number of wasps who seemed intent on landing on your food whilst you were eating. Between us we got stung 3 times.

A great welcome awaits you at the Antigone. From the moment we got of the transfer bus the friendliness of both Antigone herself, Hercules her husband and their sons Pano and Adonis was all to evident. Whilst we were there Antigone and her staff were always on hand to meet the new arrivals and say a sometimes tearful goodbye to departing guests. Many of whom regarded themselves as Antigones friends after their stay.

The apartments are large and kept spotlessly clean by Sylvia the cleaner. They don,t have the best views from the balcony`s but we only used the balcony for our morning and evening drinks of tea.
Thassos town centre (about 8 mins walk and the beach a further 3 mins) has plenty going for it. With enough shops bars and resturants to satisfy most.

We particularly enjoyed the food at The Toxotis and for a taste of home try The Chefs Table.
Enjoy the view of the old harbour and a drink at the Remezo, Cheers bar for Sky, a beer or Full Englih breakfast. or the Brazil bar to people watch.

This being our third visit to the island we didn`t stray far from Thassos Town but from our memories of previous visits Thassos is a beautiful island and very easy to get around.
The only downside of the holiday was the return flight picking up at Skiathos adding a further 90 mins to the travelling time.

Thanks to the people of Thassos town and particularly Antigone and all at the apartments for a smashing holiday.
