We have recently returned from two weeks at the Filipidis Studios at Golden Beach. The studios are excellent – spotless and well-equipped and their location perfect. We had absolutely no problems with the camp site opposite, very few wasps, no problems with dogs, and amazingly, no mozzies at night!

Food was very good and many of the tavernas are located at the edge of the beach. After reading the negative reviews of the Fedra we were loath to eat there but decided we should try it for ourselves. We ate there twice and each time found all the staff extremely polite, friendly and efficient. We were made to feel very welcome and the food was very good.

Our favourite tavernas were the Sotiris, Vigli, The Green Sea (on the way to Skala Potamia) and surprisingly the Fedra.

Had a great time in thassos, tzakis and his team are great, nothing was too much trouble, he even lent me money and went out specially to get me cigarettes. Hotel Dionyssos is on a steep hill but the views are breath taking. We were regulars at daves bar, which is a lot of fun. Also ate at the vigli restaurant which is very good. All in all a great place to see and stay, but would advise only for independant travelers as no british tour company uses Dionyssos now. just as well really as the 'here we go crowd' would ruin it.

We have just return from a week's holiday at the Filipidis Apartments in Thassos (We arrived 25th May) and would most definitely recommend them for cleanliness, space, location and resort.

These apartments are family owned and the family live on the ground floor. The building and gardens are the family's pride, with the father looking after the lawned garden bedecked with geraniums, roses and beautifully shaped trees to the front and lawned rear garden surrounded by home grown salad and grapes.

The building itself is 2 floors high and nearly every room faced east, so the balconies caught the morning sun but was cool enough to sit in during the afternoon and the evening when the sun was going down. There is plenty of storage space (wardrobe and drawers) silver double sink unit with cupboards above and below, a fridge, a stainless steel hot plate with two electric rings. A table and two chairs inside, also a coffee table and one more comfortable chair. Our room had a double and a single bed inside and still lots of room.

Cups saucers, dishes plates and cutlery were available as was glasses and pots and pans, electric kettle but no toaster.

A tea towel, scourer and sponge was provided for washing up.

2 hand towels and bath towels were provided and was changed once during the week as was bed linen.

Although facing a camp site, we suffered no noise, although I can imagine when the camp site got really busy you would beable to hear it.

Just around from these apartments is some more called MARINA apartments which a small bar opposite which has its own swimming pool that you were free to use.

Lots of little supermarkets within 5 mins walk. reasonable prices. Lovely beach although no showers on beach. Cost for 2 sunbeds and parasol was 7E per day for the time we were there. Not many folk about this week. Temperature was approx 26 - 33degrees and although there is no air conditioning we slept with the patio doors open every night and felt safe enough and cool enough. Took my plug in mozzie repellent so didnt have any trouble although got bit outside a couple of times.

Not much to do except relax over a meal and drink in the evenings. Plenty of choice without going too far.

All in all - a lovely place (both resort and accom) to just relax and enjoy yourself. clean accom, clean beach, just take a good book and hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Not many wasps in May but apparently they are swarming everywhere by Sept.

we went to thassos at the beginning of the season.the weather wasnt great but that made us do things we wouldnt normally do on holiday (walk, explore and hire quad bikes}instead of laying on a sunbed all day.Thassos is a beautiful island with fantastic views and wonderful people.we found nikki and her family in the blue bay hotel great and could not do enough to please, ask to rent a fridge in your room if you want one, nikki even used to take us down to the resort to save us walking, even though the walk isnt as bad as we thought.we never had a bad meal whilst there, the fedra is great value as most of the others.we cant wait to go back,we loved it and the blue bay has the best views of the island.

We stayed at Filipidis Apartments for two weeks. It was the most relaxing holiday we have had. The apartments themselves were very clean and bright and well looked after. Having read other reviews, we cannot comment on the lack of air conditioning as this was not a problem for us at this time of year, nor were the wasps that several other people complained about. Although there were wasps, they were few and far between. Our only gripe was that there was no toaster in the apartment (and the fact that we couldn't stay for another fortnight!) We did not experience any noise from the camp site opposite, however, we appreciate that this may become noisy in the high season.

The beach was a short walk across the road, and there were several good restaurants within easy reach, Playa de Ora, Finikas and Fedras being three of them. Although other reviewers have slated Fedras, we found the food and service excellent. Again this could have been because we were not there in the height of the season - we can only assume that other reviwers had to wait a long time for their food - but surely this goes to prove that it is being cooked fresh. (And while you wait you can relax with a nice drink and enjoy the scenery!)

Thassos is a small island so you can drive all the way round it in less than 3 hours, but there are several sheltered coves you can visit. All in all a very enjoyable holiday and we recommend Filipidis to anyone looking for a quiet laid back holiday.

Golden Beach is not for you if nightlife is high on your list of priorities. It is a very good family resort also suitable for couples. The ferry crossing is a wonderful start to the holiday. There are many walks in the area and one we enjoyed began at the top of the hotel. We also enjoyed catching the bus to Panagia and walking back following the stream. The walk along the beach to Skala Potamia is very pleasant with numerous tavernas along the way.We caught the bus into Thassos town which is good for shopping and were surprised to see how it had grown especially around the port area. The port tended to be rather chaotic but we liked the general hustle and bustle. Golden Beach is in a lovely setting with wonderful views. The island of Thassos is still unspoilt

After reading previous reviews we were happy to choose the hotel but unfortunately it had changed hands earlier in the year and didn't live up to our expectations. the previous owners still own the Vigli down the hill and the food was good and the setting fantastic. The hotel is situated in a very quiet location which we liked. The hill was as we expected and this didn't pose any problems, except for one day when the hotel bus didn't arrive. Take care when using the steps at the deep end of the pool One of the fixings had come loose. Hopefully it has been repaired by now. We had a room on the first level after the main building. It was comfortable and clean with a great view and the balcony had an awning which was essential when it was very hot. It also had a mesh sliding door which kept out the wasps during the day. The fridge was a great addition. the breakfast consisted of the usual things. Eggs cheese meat jam honey yoghurt cake etc. And the toaster? Many friendships could be made standing by this machine as the staff kept turning it off if nobody was actually using it so when you needed it you had to wait for it to warm up. Breakfast was a problem because of the wasps being attracted to the food. (Not all of it was covered)

Golden Beach was very busy in August. There were a lot of Europeans staying at the campsites situated in Golden Beach, although they didn't cause any trouble or worry.

The Greek people traveled from the mainland to Thassos at the weekends, so the beaches were very busy. The Greek people tended to leave cigarette ends on the beach and took their babies and young children into the sea to wipe their bums after pooing, which was awful.

Golden Beach would be fab if less busy, and probably very beautiful.

We would recommend a car to travel the island, since there are more remote and beautiful places to see, and Thassos Town is nice to visit.

Traveling from mainland to Thassos was fab and a great way to start the holiday, and we shall be returning but not to Golden Beach.

Blue Bay is in a fantastic location, with views over Golden Beach and it's surrounding mountains! Probably the best view in Golden Beach resort.

It's a 20 minute walk to Golden Beach from the accomodation, so not too good for the less mobile. The tavernas and shops are situated in Golden Beach, so it's a 20 minute walk to all amenities, and at night the walk back can be dark.

The hotel itself isn't really a hotel, more like an appartment but with no kitchenette facilities. Not having a fridge was really disappointing, particularly to store cold water and beer.

Breakfast is served by the owners, who aren't over friendly but OK. It isn't a typical buffet style breakfast but either cereal and toast one day, or canned fruit and toast the next, and if you're lucky scrabbled egg (twice a week). Really quite poor.

The rooms are cleaned every day, although when we first arrived there were hairs left in our shower, not too pleasant.

The price we paid for Blue Bay is for the view and not for the amenities or breakfast provided.

We have just returned from a week at the Smaragdi 2 Apartments (they're actually called Emerald 2 Apartments when you get to the resort - I believe it was to distinguish between the Emerald apartments which are a Thomas Cook destination) and had a great week. Everyone seems to mention 'the hill' and some say that this ruined their holiday. Although, yes, the hill is quite steep and certainly not recommended for anyone with walking difficulties, those with wheelchairs or pushshairs, this hill should not put you off from booking. It did not spoil the holiday in any way, shape or form. And anyway, to get the fantastic views we saw from our balcony overlooking the bay, you do need to be quite high up. The owner is very friendly, but to see him you will need to go to the original Emerald apartments just across the road as the reception at Emerald 2 is closed! The beach is great, the sea is very inviting and great for kids as you can walk out quite a distance and the sea is still lapping around your ankles. The quickest way to get down to the beach/tavernas is to turn right out of the Emerald 2 and down the hill which brings you out in front of Hotel Fedra and Golden Sands Hotel. There is a small supermarket just on your left and another shop selling essentials. There is a cheaper supermarket if you turn right at the bottom of the hill and walk a couple of hundred yards along the road - opposite an Avis rental centre. To get to the beach, just walk past the Golden Sands Hotel and pick the best spot. 2 Sunbeds and Umbrellas are 7 Euros for daily hire. It wasn't very busy when we were there, so no problems with getting one even later on in the day. We found a couple of nice restaurants, the Vigli, which is also where we had the Thomson 'welcome meeting' - this can be found if you turn left at the bottom of the hill and walk a few hundred yards - you will see it's sign, you can either walk up the steps or up a hill - again a great view of the bay. The Fedra Restaurant was also very nice - and seemed to be the most popular, overlooking the beach. The only negative thing to say about the Emerald 2 was the fact that the linen/sheets should have been changed twice in the week, but ours were only changed once, and the cleaners didn't really seem to clean much either. The flights/transfers to the ferry and to the resort went smoothly, so all in all, a very pleasant time and we would certainly recommend this resort and accommodation to anyone.
