Just got back from a week long, last minute trip to Thassos, Golden Beach.
We had a fantastic time - didn't venture from Golden beach throughout the whole time we were there as everything we needed was on our doorstep. It was complete chill-out from the word go.Surprised at some of the comments of the beach as we found it to be one of the most stunning beaches we've ever been to - single golden stretch of sand and clear blue sea. We found the wasps to be a slight problem - but then you just have to live with it really ! The tavernas and bars were all within very easy reach and were all of a high standard and excellent value.
People were very friendly on the whole and I found the holiday to be one of the best experiences abroad in a long time (and I am well travelled!). Beats the Canary Islands by miles - it is the exact opposite though and won't appeal to the party animals - but then it is totally NOT tacky !! The apartments were basic, yes, but exactly what you need and were clean, modern and DID have air conditioning (not sure why the people who stayed there in July 2007 said there was none ..?!).
In summary, well worth a visit!Don't miss out !

We have just got back (19/08/07) from a very relaxing week in Thassos. we stayed at the Anastasia Apartments in Golden Beach. Our accomodation was a small family-run concern, right next to the beach, all the rooms are clean and well presented.
The resort is very laid back and peaceful so avoid it if you want noisy bars/discos etc. There are plenty of resteurants serving good food, we particularly recommend The ";Playa de Oro"; as the food and service are both excellent. We would recommend this resort/accomodation to anyone seeking a relaxed beach centred holiday. The bay is beautiful, the beach is clean golden sand which shelves gently into the warm Agean Sea. Ideal for swimming whilst taking in the panoramic view of the mountains behind the bay.

The Anastasia Studios are located at the western perimeter of the small and lovely resort of Golden Beach which also means we had easy access to the next and slightly larger resort of Skala Potamis. We thought we were lucky in our position and it was only 150 metres down a track to a quiet section of the beach where there were still umbrellas and chairs available for hire. The studios themselves are basic but pleasant and clean.
The equipment includes a toaster and kettle but NO AIR CONDITIONING was available and this was a major blow as it was really needed. You could hire a fan but it really did very little and was a waste of money. Hopefully the friendly owners will move into the twenty first century and put Air conditioning in shortly. If so we would definitely return here but otherwise may look to accommodation in the resort that had this facility.
The resort of Golden Beach is a great place to chill out although we would not think it suitable for families. It is a place to come for a sedate holiday with very little to do. One tavernas to miss is Fedras where we walked out after a row the staff attitude here left a lot to be desired. Also we suggest you give the tavernas by the large camp site a wide berth as they tend to get rather noisy. Our final point that has been highlighted by other reviewers the high number of wasps here can effect your enjoyment so make sure you come well prepared with insect/wasps repellent.
Overall wasps apart a smashing holiday.

We have just arrived back after 2 weeks in Golden Beach and i have to say we were disappointed. The studios were basic but the maid came most days and so everywhere was kept really clean, but overall we thought that they were in need of refurbishment. The fridge never got cold and the handle came off the door every time we opened it, my husband had to put the toilet cystern back onto the wall as it was hanging off.
The beach was narrow and the sand was spoiled by loads of cotton seeds which had washed up from a shipwreck a few months previously, attempts had been made to clean these away (we found heaps of them dumped at the side of the road just out of town) but they were washing up again while we were there because a barge came along to remove some more of the wreckage. As for the wasps!! thousands of them.luckily we only got stung once each (despite having deet insect repellant and a can of Raid),one poor chap refused to come down to the beach again.
Another eyesore was the camp site, although fenced round and shielded by trees, it looked more like a travellers site, and seemed to be almost entirely occupied by eastern europeans.
Eating out was good, Cave Doro, Fedra and Vigli, all good food and value for money. some places were either closed or running down even though there was still 2 weeks left to go before the end of the season, ie no fresh pizzas at playa doro(although the food here was good too) and the bakery shop was closed when we arrived on the 10th!
Stefano`s bar was good for drinks and cocktails and Neenan`s Irish bar had great breakfasts. To end on a positive note! we hired a car and travelled around the island a few times, it is a beautiful unspoiled island with many empty beaches, especially on the western coast. Yes we would go again. No we would not go to Golden Beach, especially late season.

Anatasia Studios are ideally located towards the outskirts of Golden Beach, a 2 minutes stroll from the sea.
The appartments are built on 3 levels with each room seemingly having a balcony and/or patio area. (I did notice that some rooms had 2 windows plus patio doors within the balcony area, whilst others had just patio doors).
I found my room to be clean, bright and modern. It was equipped with a basic sink/drainer/hob/fridge affair (plus toaster and kettle)in the small kitchen area.
We were able to hire a fan and a deposit box for an additonal charge.
The studios were family run and we were made to feel very welcome. On some days Grandpa George would pick us tomatoes from the garden and leave them in our room, whilst on others, Anatasia would leave us cake!
I was very pleased with the standard and qaulity of the rooms, but (with termperatures alledgely soaring to 32 degrees at night in the rooms) air conditioning is a necessity).
This was my second visit to Golden Beach, which has expanded slightly since my original visit 3 years ago. It's quiet and relaxing atmosphere and overall charm is still ever-present, thankfully.
The Studios are located next to, in my opinion, the nicest section of Golden Beach. The beach itself consists of beautiful white-ish sand, which shelves gently into the sea. The sea is clean and clear. Beautiful!
In terms of evening 'food opportunities', we recommend Finikas (great cooking, welcoming staff), Fedra (tables over-looking the aegian sea!) and Vigli (on a small cliff-top). We had found that we only seemed to get through 60Euros per day (including water, lunchtime sandwiches, sunlounger hire and 3 course evening meals! Bargian!)
We booked our week's holiday on line via Thomson 2 weeks before departure. Although affordable, I personally felt the cost quite expensive in terms of 'value for money'.
Overall, a lovely quite, relaxing resort. A clean and delightful appartment, with very welcoming hosts, which I'd thoroughly recommend... although desperately in need of air-con!

First time to Thassos, loved every minute. Ferry to the island was great, gives you time to take in the view you don't normally get when landing by plane. A great plus was having bags taken from you at the airport, next time you see them, outside your studios!!(and same on the return trip). Anastasia studios were just what anyone could ask for, very clean, sea view and just far enough away from everyone else, but within walking distance of shops etc. Having walked the full length of the beach,we also thought we had just about the best 100m of the beach on our doorstep. No problem with bugs of any type day or night which was a first. The family that own Anastasia are so nice, grandad George looks after the sunbeds on the beach and helps in the bar.
Do try all the restaurants, some you will like more than others, but that's the fun and you get to meet more of the locals. Its an easy island to get round in a car and you can find many spots all to yourself.Never found it to be busy even though it was Aug, always a seat on the buses which cover most parts. The people are so nice, they will talk to you (in Greek)like they know you and always happy to help. One thing you must do on Golden Beach is get up early one morn for the sunrise, its worth it(even better if make time to walk all the way round the headland for it (left as you face the sea). Not far from Thassos town if you miss the shops and some great cafes.Worth the climb to the top of the ruins for the view (start early!! and take plenty of water)one island we will miss and the slow ferryride away just makes you want to cry!
