Overall Hotel Rating:
Our holiday coincided with a Greek heatwave so it was hot, hot, hot!!. Not to worry we could spend our days on the superb golden sands constantly taking tips in the glorious blue sea. In additional The George Hotel had air conditioning to hire which was essential. We understand from other tourists that a lot of accommodations in this resort do not have Air conditioning.
The hotel was simple but for a 2 star rating it was better than anticipated. The proprietors Stavros and Karen were fun, helpful and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. The rooms were typically Greek basic but clean and comfortable. There was also a bar which was great when returning from eating out.
There are a number of tavernas in Golden Beach (very little else) and most of them ranged from average to excellent depending on personal choice. The only one we would warn you off is Federas Taverna by the beach at the Eastern end of the resort. where the staff were rude and offhand and the service was appalling and in our opinion it is one to avoid. the only problem we had on holiday were with the wasps who all seemed to have come on holiday to this resort. there were not just one or two but hundreds.
Both the resort and the George hotel are best suited to couples of all aged who want a tranquil and stress free holiday, we do not think families would enjoy it here and in fact saw very few British children during our stay. We tends to prove our point.

Just back from another holiday in Thassos.
Great time had by all again. We went early in the season this time. Very quiet and peacful. If you just want a chilled and relaxing holiday this is the place to be. The George is a basic but lovely hotel owned by the mad greek Stavos and his english wife Karen. They are the best hosts ever. Stavros with his tales about the merchant navy and life had us in stitches all night. There is nothing they wouldn't do for you. We hired a car out to look around the island and so glad we did. There are some spectacular views from the mountains, and some of the smaller villages look like they have never been touched by time. One special place is Panagia, a village up in the mountain with a running spring through the centre of it. It took us about 3 hrs to drive round the island just to take it all in and find out where we wanted to stop and look the following day. Some of the beaches are hard to get to in a car so just park up and walk down. There is about a 30 min ferry ride from the airport to Golden Beach. All in all a lovely holiday and will go again.

We had the most fantastic holiday recently staying in the Goerge Hotel, Golden Beach, Thasssos.
I had checked out this site but our hotel was not listed so was that good or bad??? Well, it turned out to be the best hotel we have stayed in on a Greek Island!
The hotel only had 10 bedrooms and they are spotlessly clean, cleaned everyday by Karen, the English wife of the wonderful eccentric Stavros! Our children are 15 and 13 so this year we were concerned that Thassos might not have enough for them to do as it is so quiet but as they have had many Greek Island holidays knew roughly what to expect when we said it was very small and not too touristy!
Our 13 year old meet up with another little girl and spent the two weeks swimming in the sea or using the pool bar of the hotel oppposite(which is free but they obviously like you to have a beer or two, which we obviosly did!!!) She didn't want to come home. Our son who is almost 16 did suffer more this year than before due to the peacefulness (no booming, blaring music anywhere!Horray!)but loved it all the same.He actually read a book....My husband is unable to walk very far due to illness and the George was just about right for him as it is on the road (very flat and quiet again) and only 300 mts from the supermarket and the beach.
I took books and pitched up on the beach, which was busier than I expected but wonderful all the same. We did go july/August and as the Greeks are holiday in August it did get exceedingly busy on the beach but they are a joy to watch as huge friendly families decend with Grandama, Grandpa Uncle Tom Cobly an' all!
We would go back to Thassos like a shot but would probably avoid August for the above reason and also it was very hot so we were not able to walk too far and explore the Island as we would have liked so next time we will aim for June or September.I read comments about the restaurants and did take on board what people said so we didn't have a bad meal in the two weeks. We ended up returning to Finekas (opp camp site on Golden Beach) as their food was wonderfully fresh and they did brilliant Pizzas in their Pizza oven! The food on Thassos is, as has been said, very similar where ever you go but if you love Greek food you will not be dissappointed.
Every one we met had been to Thassos before, which we took as a good sign, some for years and years and had watched the Island change from almost deserted to the place it is today. We did 2 excursions with Thomson which we really enjoyed. The day boat trip which included a BBQ (as a Veggie I had domades) with the any fish you caught over the side of the boat! We swam when the captain threw the anchor over the side in the middle of the Agean and said that you could jump off you wanted! The kids were in like a shot.
The other trip was a coach trip around the entire Island 75 miles! Our guide was brilliant as she knew everything about the History of Thassos back to the year dot! The Monestary was a bit of a let down but the views were amazing. Panagia was another sop and this was worth the wait! Panagia is the most wonderful little village with a fresh water spring/river running through it and into a fountain in the square. Legend has it that if women drink from all 4 spouts she becomes pregnant.... my daughter was allowed ONE spout!!!
If you have been to Greece before you will know how the Greeks live, GMT is Greek ";Maybe"; time so don't expect anyone to move faster than one of the many goats on the Island!Back to the George. Karen and Stavros are honestly the best hosts we have stayed with. They are funny, warm and make every person feel like they are thier friends for the time you stay with them.
My son helped deliver two kittens (Yuk he said) which added to Karens beloved managerie of animals. We feel in love with Stony the 4 week old goat and the naughty ginger kittens! It felt to everyone staying there that this was Stavros and Karens house and we were staying there with them rather than us being tourists.
We ended every evening with an Ouzo (Stavros's own can strip paint, beware!) sitting outside our little bar watching the shooting stars listening to Stavros telling the most outrageous stories about hedgehogs rolling in grapes...( I am still not sure about that one) and his life on the island. The wasps people mentioned on this site were not bad at all this summer for us but they are around the restaurants sometimes (the lamb chops bring them in groups!) but you get used to talking and flicking at the same time!
Go to Thassos soon before it changes. It is green and lush, it snows at Easter and the Island is full of proud hardworking Greeks who love thier Island and before the 18/30 holidays find out about it!For us, there is nothing negative to write, we loved the George Hotel, Golden Beach and we will be back!
