Thassos being the most northern of the Aegean islands and going right at the end of September had me a bit worried about the weather, but the Gods were kind and we had excellent sunny weather and came back with quite a good tan. The nights are a bit cool and the days don't really warm up till about 10 - 11 am ( by which time it was just right) so take a jumper or light jacket if travelling at the same time as us.

Kavalla airport was a breeze and we were through and on the coach within 40 mins (poss cause it was quite late in the season and very quiet) 20 mins on the coach see's you arrive at the port of keramoti which is quite small and a bit of a dump but we didn't have long to wait before the ferry left port for Thassos. There is something about travelling to your destination by sea, it really feels like your getting away from it all.

Thassos from a distance looked very interesting with high pine covered craggy mountains and deep valleys.
We docked and were soon on our way and after a drive of about 45 mins arrived at our accommodation.
Sunset Studios in Limenaria are set up a VERY steep hill the benefits of this are a great view and peace and quiet but the hill although not a great distance really is a killer.

The studio was clean but a bit on the small side especially the shower room. It had two single beds (which were very comfortable) two bedside tables, dressing table with large mirror and wardrobe with draws underneath - plenty of storage space and a small verandha outside which was ok but didn't offer much privacy. The self catering equipment was adequate but only just.....2 dishes, 2 plates, 2 mugs, 2 glasses, 2 knives, 2 spoons, 2 forks, a big saucepan, a frying pan, a small greek coffee type pot thingey, an absurdly large culander and a two ring Baby Belling.

We only ate in twice so the lack of such basic things as a decent knife or a chopping board wasn't really a problem but had we been on a tighter budget and eating every in every night I think the lack of utensils would have become a real pain. To the side and above the studios was a delightful pool with sunloungers and this area although small was really pleasant.

There are a couple of Tavernas on Trypiti beach about 1o mins walk from Sunset Studios but we didn't try them so can't comment. There is also a very mini mini market in the bungalow complex next to the Sunset but it has very very limited and overpriced stock.

Trypiti Beach is about 15 mins walk away and as beaches go it wasn't bad but there are far better beaches only a short drive away

My verdict on the Sunset Apartments is about a 7/10, great view, very peaceful and quiet, nice pool area, pleasant owner, very clean but not that well equiped or spacious.

We had reserved a car via the internet with Speedy Rentals before we left but could have got it much cheaper if we had waited till we got there. Not sure if the deals to be had were so good because it was near the end of the season or not but think it would be best to hire once there and haggle like hell.

Our nearest ";town"; was Limenaria, quite small but we really warmed to this little place. There is the usual row of taverna's by the seafront and were all much of a muchness but we found Mouragio to be the best of the bunch with the nicest fried aubergines and lamb chops.

BEACHES......our favourite was near the Archangle Monastry, a broad sweep of sand and shingle with a great little cove at one end, don't be put off by the rocks in the sea they are only a few feet wide then there is lovely sand. One word of warning if you park under the Olive Tree's for shade don't be surprised if after a while you see a goat on your car roof eating the olive leaves. There are lots of great beaches from the wide open space of golden beach to little tiny coves. Jusr drive round the island till you see one you like, it may involve a bit a scramble down to the sand or a short drive along a bumpy dirt track but a small price to pay for nice sand, crystal clear sea which you might have all to yourself.

If you want nightlife till dawn, loads of shops and things to do and see then Thassos is not really for you. But if your looking for great beaches and a very laid back atmosphere were all you have to do is relax, sun bathe, eat nice Greek food, swim in crystal clear water, read a good book etc then Thassos will suit you very well................but please bear in mind this is my impression of the Island at the end of the season....it could be blody horrible during high season !
