Just arrived back from the Alexandra Beach hotel, and would go back tomorrow! We booked a late deal with Thomson, and was reassured with the reviews on this site and others, and was not disappointed. We are a 'more mature' couple and were looking for a relaxing, fairly quiet holiday, and that is exactly what we got, though I would imagine that the hotel would be equally suitable for younger couples and families with children.

The hotel is very clean, and the only downsides that I can see are that the beach at the hotel is very 'pebbly' and that the service at the bars can be very slow - I think they are going to have to buck up their ideas a bit when the season gets into full swing! The food is excellent, with plenty of choice - even chips for breakfast if that is what you want!

It is about 10 minutes walk to the shops and bars in Potos, and about 20 mins walk into Pefkari. I can heartily recommend the Boomerang Bar (say hello to Alex, Abe and Joe), and if you book them the day before their sun beds are free, and the beach in Potos itself is sandy rather than pebbles.

If you are looking to go to Potos, please do. It is relatively unspoiled and very beautiful,

I believe this is the first review for this hotel of 2007 so has anything changed? Probably not.

We went in May for one week half board. Now even though the season had begun the resort was still not really fully open. There were plenty of sunbeds to go around, but I can see this being a problem in high season. This may be eliviated by the (free) sunbeds being placed on the beach. To be honest I preferred it without them (in May) as it meant we had the beach pretty much to ourselves.

Again, There were enough tables to go around in the resturaunt but i doubt this will be the case in high season. The food is a buffet and it is of a good standard. I'm more than happy to try other food types but it is probably more to cater for the central european palet and does leave you yearning for a nice solid slab of steak after a week. by the way, you will require long trousers or jeans for the resturaunt in the evening.

There is (next to) no entertainment in this hotel barr a dodgy Greek night once a week. This is not necessarily a bad thing as the views from the bar area are absolutely stunning and having some dodgy past it 1970's entertainer droaning on really would ruin a fantastic sunset. TAKE SOME BINOCULARS!! Dolphins can be seen feeding from the bar. We saw this 3 times. Just look for a frenzied flock of seagulls and the dolphins will be below.

There is quite a varied selection of room locations ranging through great, OK and rubbish. the majority fall into the OK category. The rooms are very clean although there were a few hairs under the bed and i had to pick a few off the sheets. The sheets were clean but I suspect the laundry staff have long hair and I wouldn't let it put you off!

Around the resort it was pretty quiet as it was early season. There were no watersports available that I could find.

I promised Joe, the Boomerang bar would get a mention and in his words ";the best goddam dungie in Thassos mate!"; Top bloke and I'll miss putting the world to rights with him until the early hours.

Finally (phew!) Hire a car! This is the easiest place in the world to drive. There is one road that goes all the way around the island and is 65 km in total. Probably more than one day would allow you to spend more time in places than we did.

Overall a beuatiful place and very relaxing and I am likely to go back in a couple of years.

Stayed at this Hotel last week in July first week Aug.

Good Points - The Hotel is in a nice spot, with lovely views out to sea. Rooms are really nice and modern with good air con and plenty of space. We found the food very good. Potos is great, lots of nice bars, you must try Boomerang Bar, we spent most nights there. Not so good points - the reception area is poor. We knew the hotel would be busy for the time of year, and it WAS, unfortunately the hotel cannot cope with the vast amount of people - the pool area is far too small and extremely crowded, the hotel need to invest in at least another 100 sunbeds, there just wasn't enough to go round. Meal times were pretty chaotic and the restaurant again, not big enough. Apparently quite a lot of new rooms were added a couple of years ago, but no changes made to the rest of the hotel to accommodate this.

All in all we had a good holiday but wouldn't return here as it certainly fell short of the 4* rating.

Just returned from two weeks at the Alexandra Beach Hotel, on arrival we were greated by friendly reception staff and given the key to our room, and told our cases would be with us in the hour - 3 hours later they still had not arrived!!!! which was a family room very clean, had fridge with freezer which was handy to make ice cubes, childrens beds were very narrow hence our two did not sleep well the whole two weeks had to put a quilt on the floor as our son kept falling out of bed! would of done better to have bunk beds, the room had a small patio which was lovely to sit out of a evening.

The pool was lovely could of been bigger for the amount of people that were at the hotel, and more sunbeds are definately needed, there is a small pool with sunbeds but no parasols. On thing that did concern us was they allowed glasses around by the pool area and several people got glass in their foot, from glasses which had been broken, we asked for plastic but they did not have any. The bar and restuarant are very expensive for drinks compared to the town. The food was excellent the first week no complaints and the service was good, but the second week it went down hill they did not have the same amount of staff on and the food was very repetitive. We did not have a problem with getting at table either at breakfast or for the evening meal. The beach is a bit dissapointing had to buy children beach/sea shoes so they could go in the sea as there alot of sea urchines. The beach in the town is lovely and definiately worth a visit.

The Bars along the sea front are great and all make you feel so welcome esp the Boomerang Bar Abe and Joe - is a must visit and as abe kept telling us he has the cleanest toilets on the island!!!! Another must is to hire a car - found the cheapest to be Potos Car Rental in the Town - Hired a jeep for two days - and went to the highest point of the island, wot an experience very hair raising in some points but well worth the drive the views are spectacular. The island is beautiful so relax and peaceful and the people make you feel at home.

Will definately visit the island again.

Overall we had a great holiday at this hotel and would happily return again.

The Hotel
We had booked a family sea view room with Thomson as we were holidaying to celebrate our joint 40th birthdays. Shortly before departure we were informed that Thomson's contract with the hotel had changed and we were no longer able to have this type of room. We therefore emailed the hotel direct who were very helpful and when we arrived we were duly shown to a very nice room .... with a sea view! Hotel was very clean and probably one of the best pools we have ever experienced - the kids loved it. Ah yes, the kids. Well, we also booked this hotel because of the advertised Thomson children's rep and activities in the brochure. Guess what? Shortly before departure, another letter from Thomson, this time informing us that there was to be no Thomson Kid's club, because the hotel has its own, so there is no need for them to provide one. The Hotel kid's club was appalling - one poor girl trying her best to deal with lots of kids, all age groups and different nationalities. She had no chance, and neither did the kids! However, our kids made friends anyway and there was a really nice crowd of people in the hotel when we were there so we suppose it wasn't that much of a problem. And finally - meal times - organised chaos! We often had to fight for a table and they were far too close together. If someone behind you wanted to get out everyone had to move! Food was OK but repetitive - they tried their best but disappointing for a 4*.

The resort
Really lovely, it was a 10 minute walk into Potos, just right for an evening stroll and a selection of very nice bars right on the sea front. The best by far was the Boomerang bar, as many of the other reviews have said. Abe and Joe are fantastic, so welcoming our boys loved it there and therefore so did we! The beach is also nicer here than at the hotel and all of the bars have sun loungers, if you buy a drink you can use them for free which was great.

All in all we had a really nice time, perhaps we have come down a little hard on the hotel but beware - if you like leisurely evening dinners and you are hoping for a bit of peace and quiet while your little ones are looked after in the kids club - this is not the place for you!

Altough Hotel was OK and set in a lovely location and grounds we found the food and restaurant facilities of a poor quality and not what you usually expect from a 4 star hotel
Meals times were very disorganised and we found that we had to fight for a table

On a better note we found the resort of Potos excellent and every one in this small town were so friendly, theres everything here that you need including a great pharmacy and doctor and loads of good tavernas, it really is a typicaly Greek Town

If you visit this resort you have to pay a visit to the Boomerang Bar, it's run by two Aussie Lads, Abe and Joe and I've got to say that we've never been made to feel so welcome any where in the world!! the first time you visit this bar you get the welcome of someone who had been a regular for years!!! they are unbelievably friendly

We will definately be returning to this resort but I've got to say that we will not be staying at Alexandra Beach again

I have just come back from this hotel and all i can say is that it is the best Hotel the best food the best accomadation and pool anybody could wish for. The staff were always so freindly, the surroundings of the hotel were beautiful and I would make it a 5 Star Rating and not the 3/4 that is stated it is certainly worth more. I hope to go back again and again. and the little town of potos is a lovely place to walk at night to burn some of the lovely food off that you get at the Hotel. A big thank-you to all the staff at the hotel for helping my holiday be a graet one.

Had previously visited Potos in 2002 and wanted to go back due to the beautiful beach and surrounding area. A bad experience 3 years earlier resulted in the only suitable accomodation being the Alexandra Beach.
We booked 2 twin bed apartments which were next door to each other and had no option other than to take half board. Whilst it has to be said that the accommodation was of a good standard I have to question the 4 star rating. I have stayed in better self catering apartments in Zante and would suggest the rooms are 3 star at best. The breakfasts could only be described as very average and the evening meal was very repetitive. After 3 days we chose to eat out for the remainder of the holiday..

The beach at the hotel left a lot to be desired and could best be described as poor, you even had to pay for your sunbed!!

We spent virtually everyday on Potos beach where we were able to renew our acquantince with George and Theo who run Cafe bar ANONYM (next door to Boomerang). George and Theo looked after us every day providing free sunbeds and a really large fixed parasol which was able to provide shade when ever we needed it. As usual they couldn't do enough for us, they can only be described as true Greek hosts. We would recommend any British tourist visiting Potos to visit their bar, you will always be guarantted a very warm welcome, tell them Paul and Jackie sent you. You wont be disappointed!!.

Places to eat out are plenty. Unfortunately our 2 favourite places, ZOOM and TAVERN IRENE had changed their chefs since our last visit and whilst the food was OK it was not up to the standard we had previously experienced. I would thoroughly recommend POSEIDON restuarant (next to cafe bar ANONYM)great choice of food, sensibly priced and well run by the head waiter Tassos. My only complaint is wherever you go to eat no one seems in any hurry to give you your bill.it's as if they want you to stay for ever.

We all love Potos and the people there very much, whether we go back next year remains to be seen but we would recommend the resort to anyone. Thassos is a beautiful island and still remains very much our favourite Greek island.

Alexandra beach was a comfortable hotel but if you are on a tight budget and expecting the food at the hotel to cater for your daily needs you will end up disappointed and probably end up having to eat out most days.

Had a very pleasant 14 day holiday at the Alexandra Beach last summer.

The hotel was very spacious and stylish and we found the accommodation generally of very high standard with lovely grounds to wander through. Rooms were spotlessly clean and comfortable, with plenty of storage, and could not be faulted. The AC worked beautifully.

The food was rather uninspiring and was rarely labelled, so had to constantly ask, but we always find that the salads and bread are lovely in Greece and this was no exception. The restaurant manager decided to introduce a no-shorts rule for males halfway through our stay, which upset some people for a while and should have been implemented at the start of the holiday. We found the beer prices to be quite reasonable and during happy hour downright cheap!

The hotel beach is stony and slippery in the water, so take shoes if you intend using it. There is a jetty which makes for great fun diving into the water and it is much cooler out there. As mentioned previously sunbeds on the beach are chargeable.

The pool area is very nice but not quite enough sunbeds at busy times, there was talk of another pool being built, but not sure when that will be. There is a small gym and beauty salon, tennis, 5-a-side football, and volleyball. The animation team were tunisian and a good laugh.

Potos town is a 5 min walk and is pleasant with a good sandy beach. Being rugby fans we soon found the boomerang bar which was showing the Lions Tour live and ended up being our bar of choice. Alex and his staff of greek aussies looked after us well.

Hired a car for two days from Hermes car rentals and would recommend them thoroughly.

Thassos is still a very unspoilt and genuine island and driving around it was a joy. Go over to Golden Beach, it is beautiful, also Paradise Beach which is ....well, paradise!

All in all, we had thoroughly good holiday and would recommend the Alexandra Beach to any one. From what we saw it is the best on the island. Enjoy.

As mentioned by other holidaymakers the ferry to Potos is quite a nice start to the holiday with the luggage being taken care of.

Maybe the hotel has seen some of these reviews and feedback from earlier years because we found excellent, friendly service, and truly good food, well presented, always fresh and the correct temperature! Lots of variety but not much concession for children (so they couldnt opt for the burgers, nuggets and chips option as these almost never turned up!) We have never before taken half board because we like to try local food and variety but we never needed to eat evening meals out as our needs were met!

We chose a family room with an upstairs gallery bedroom for our child and we thought it was lovely - spotlessly clean, spacious, stylish, cool (we never needed the airconditioning) and good facilities. Worth taking a nightlight if you have one of these rooms though as in the middle of the night the rooms are pitch black if the little ones need to come down for the loo. The beds are hard though!

We found it a wonderful safe environment for our kid because everything was so well laid out. He could therefore have his freedom and 'disappear' with the other children to play without ever being really much out of our sight. Despite the childrens club advertised in the brochure and the timing (it was half term) there were only about 30 kids at the hotel so not too many to take over the place but enough to keep one another constantly amused. The Thomson kids club provided some structure and activities and the 'Animation' team of entertainers others (far more informal) which were enjoyed so with the playground and the pool and the sports courts the kids didnt want to leave the hotel.

Didn't like the AB beach - too stoney for our liking and although the water was nice, unusable unless you'd got plastic shoes. But Potos beach was delightful - pretty, good sand, not too crowded, easy access to sunbeds (which were free if you bought a drink or lunch or whatever at the providing bar or restaurant). Good lunches at various places and friendly service again at the Boomerang Bar.

All in all would not hesitate to recommend it as a destination for younger families and older couples. Not an awful lot going on for teenagers or twentysomethings but if you dont need the nightclubs the hotel and Potos resort are excellent.

We have just returned from a week at the Alexandra Beach Hotel. After reading a few comments about the hotel I was a little apprehensive, particularly about the building work and the food. But what a pleasant surprise!

I'm guessing the building work was completed shortly before we arrived as there was no signs of anything unusual happening. The suitcases were delivered to our hotel room just after we arrived and the reception staff were really friendly and welcoming.

The room was perfect, fridge, air-con and plently of storage space. We requested a sea view but only being on the first floor meant that it was a little obscured with trees etc.

The food was absolutely lovely. There was such a varied choice and we never saw any fish fingers or pizza! It was all hot and there was always a range of fresh salads and vegetarian options. Dishes included stuffed peppers, roast potatoes, salmon, soup, lamb. The breakfast was a good enough reason to go for the food by itself - fried or continential - both with a range of options.

The swimming pool was ideal with a good amount of shade to retreat to. The beach near the hotel was shingle and pebbles and hard to walk on. The pool had such a fantastic view and atmosphere that we spent nearly every day there. The pool bar staff didn't speak very good english which meant that on one occassion we didn't actaully get our drinks. They insist on bringing it to you at your lounger or chair and you pay on arrival but I think they tend to forget when you're not standing close by!

The shop on the site was small but had everything we needed, even english novels to keep you going!

The Thomson reps seemed very young and unconfident and we later discovered that this was their first season in the hotel/resort. They seemed to know everything that was important though.

The village of Potos was fairly busy - enough to keep us amused for the week. We too spent a few nights at Boomerang with Joe, Alex and Abe. They were really friendly and often provided us with complimentary drinks and snacks.

It was the first place that we've been to where we would happily return again. Really relaxing, good facilities, a lovely room and excellent food - I'd certainly recommend it to anyone!

My husband and I were one of the first summer season guests this year (may 2004) to the Alexandra Beach Hotel.

When we arrived there was major building work at the hotel, new accomodation blocks being built and new tennis courts etc so it was very noisy and disruptive, this work should be finished by the end of May ! The rooms were very damp but this may have been because they have not been used all winter ! The hotel food is not great, the hot dishes were never more than tepid and cold dishes were unrefridgerated and displayed on tables, chips served for breakfast and fish fingers / pizza served twice in a week for dinner ! no sign of any greek food !!!!

The pool area is very nice and a real sun trap with a lovely view overlooking the sea.
We spent many a good evening in Potos at the boomerang bar, Joe, Abe and Alex are great hosts and they serve wonderful cocktails. If there are any single girls out there go and check out Joe- he is lovely and single!. We also found Zoom, its a fab restaurant in Potos which serves great food, its good value and serves huge portions- we tried many greek dishes here !

The east coast of the island is very pretty so I would recommend hiring a car to explore, there are may hidden beaches along the way and car hire is very cheap. We also took the bus to Thassos town and the service was very good - clean modern coach and on time !!!!
On the whole Thassos is a lovely place, very peaceful and very scenic !

Just spent two week's on the love'ly island of Thassos. Flew from Birmingham to Kavalla, the airport is not very big so no crowds, just pick up your luggage, then leave it outside by a sign for your hotel. It will then be transported to your hotel for you. It is then only a short coach trip to the ferry port, and only 30mins on the ferry. If you have any spare bread you can feed the seagulls which follow the ferry, they will take it out of your hand. Then back on a coach for the hotel, it took about 45mins to get to the Alexandra Beach, we made some stop's to let people off at other hotels.

Must admit our hotel look the best. The rooms we had were clean and big enough, the beds are a bit on the hard side. The TV has only three english speakink programs two world news and MTV with Greek subtitles, all the rest are in German. The hotel is very nice with nice gardens but is let down by the food, the breakfast is not too bad, if you can get a hot cup of tea or coffee.

They have built some new blocks on the front of the hotel which has doubled the number of people staying there, but they have not doubled the staff or the food serving area.Once you find a free table ther are long queues and the food is never hot, we ate out most nights. Can recommend a restaurant called Zooom about 5mins from the hotel on the main road through Potos ( turn right outside the hotel ). Very good selection on the menu and the owner Vassili will make you anything that is not on the menu, it is good value for money. The four of us could have drinks four starters and four main meals for under £9 a head.

Can also recommend the Boomerang bar on the sea front in Potos run by Alex and his two sons Joe and Abe, who come over from Australia ever year to help him through the summer, they are very friendly and make you very welcome, also look out for Bella the dog she likes tit bits. You can watch Sky Sports here.

If you are going to hire a car do'nt go through the reps, go into any of the car hire centres in Potos you will get a better deal. We had a Fiat Punto which is big enough for four people for six days for 90euros the rep wanted 107euros for three days!

There are plenty of beach's to go to. One of our favorites was Paradise Beach about 30mins by car along the coast road from Potos, it is a steep drive down from the road but our car made it okay. You may find some nudist on this beach but they keep to the very far end, the water is very shallow, you can walk out a long way and the fish will swim around your feet. The beach at the hotel is okay but if you want a sun bed you have to pay 4euros for two which is a bit of a rip off, if you are staying at the hotel they should be free. The hotel as a taverna by the beach, and the food there is a lot better.

We returned on 5th October and were the last English at the hotel for the season.

The room was a good size, spotlessly clean and looked quite new with light beech woodwork - the bathroom had a bath with shower over and a wall length mirror over the sink and worktop with good lighting. There was no light over the dressing table mirror however and the bed was the hardest we have ever slept in! Staff were very good generally although on the last week one waiter was left pretty much on his own to run backwards and forwards taking orders for drinks. Did he look harassed!!

I liked the food as I am a veggie but husband found it a bit boring although well cooked. Our favourite bar was the Boomerang in Potos - free melon chunks, free pistachio nuts, free cocktails and star toilets! We went on Thomson's Istabul Experience two day excursion. Istanbul was good and the night club terrific but the journey back was dreadful. The driver got lost for half an hour in Istanbul and only stopped for five minutes for the loos on a seven hour drive back - no time for refreshments. We were given a Lazy Day cruise by the rep as compensation, which was very enjoyable.

Overall a good holiday but better to go a week or two earlier and tavernas were starting to close down for the season on the second week.
