This was our second visit to Thassos (the first time we stayed in Potos),so we we're aware of the resort area beforehand. We chose Skala Potamia for its proximity to Thassos Town for shopping etc and in case of bad weather and also for the beauty of its location with mountains behind and very long stretch of sandy beach. We remembered that tourist facilities such as tavernas and supermarkets were adequate and looked forward to our break.

We found a late deal with Golden Sun and we're very pleased with the accomodation and arrangements. Alistion Studios is an attractive set of self-catering units, seemingly quite new and pleasingly furnished a 10 minute walk from the main centre and just a 5 minute walk from the splendid sandy beach. The grounds were well tended with a pool area and bar. The proprietor was unobtrusively helpful and the servicing of the rooms and linen change very frequent and good.

Eating is always one of our chief pleasures on holiday and we always look forward to trying out various tavernas to select favourites. In Skala we found the best value and consistently high standard of cooking and presentation at the 'Green Sea' Taverna - right at the end of the strand between Skala Potamia and Golden Beach. Its has a great location but may escape the eyes of some visitors due to its distance from the centre. Also highly recommended is the 'Pontios' taverna - it overlooks the main road as it enters Skala P from the south; we had very good value food and good service there. Also not to be forgotten is the chief taverna in the village of Panagia a few kilometres up in the hills - it does the most terrific spit roasts and its prices tend to be less than in the resort tavernas.

Other facilites in Skala P were Ok. Supermarkets were adequate; we found a good hire car deal with 'Potos' Car Hire - run by a very helpful British couple. The Bakery and Pastry Shop which stands alone at the main intersection of the resort does excellent bread, heavenly cakes and spinach pies, but try and give the correct cash, or ensure you receive the correct change. Mistakes we're made twice with us - and not in our favour!

Weather on the whole was surprisingly cool for early September; we hit an established low pressure system and had two or three overcast days. But still had plenty of brilliant warm sun and that wonderful radiant light. The sea temperature was pleasingly warm.

A lovely island - a happy break.

I had a lovely time in Thassos - i stayed at the Aliston Studios and will definatly be going back, The weather was hot, the beaches were lovely, the studio was very clean and tidy and Thanasis and Maria could not have been better hosts! - There was only one bad thing about my holiday and that is that in a shop on the beach at Skala Potamia called Grand Papadimitriou, they have a habit ( so i was told by locals and people who have been there before) of ripping people off, i found this out first hand when he charged me 9 Euros to change a 100 Euro travellers cheque!!!! - BEWARE!!!! - Other than that i made some great friends and will definatly be back in the near future.
