"Makrina Hotel Studios review"
Overall Hotel Rating:
THE PLACE - Having never been to Thassos before, but both visited Greek islands in the past, we kind of knew what to expect from a small Greek island - But we found something better! Thassos is a gorgeous and picturesque island that is typically Greek and unspoilt. There are many hidden beach's on the island that are more or less deserted and if you like the 'all over tan' try parasise beach - about 25 mins lovely ride south on a moped (the roads are so quiet the only risk is your driving skills!!) on the coast rd south of Skalla Potamia - On this beach it is split into 2 parts - People with shorts and people without! So just take a walk along and come to the part that takes your fancy!!!
ACCOM - The Makrina hotel is new this season, and is v nice - Good size room with nice balcony - most with a sea view. The rooms have TV's (who wants to watch Greek TV?) and air con, however the rooms were a nice temp at night as the balcony doors have a mozzie mesh cover, and a wind down blind for the day to keep out the heat so we didnt invest in the air con so dont know the rates. The lady owner didn't speak a word of english but was very nice and friendly (came to clean every other day!), and understood when our kettle didn't work (yes u got an electric kettle!) and it was replaced instantly! The Makrina is about 20 mins walk from the main part of the resort along the beach 'road' but is v nice after filling yourself with good food and greek wine.
FOOD and DRINK - Only being in Thassos for 7 nights we wanted to try diff places each night - Unfortunatly having taken to the Greek Red wine v well (ave eur 3.50 ltr) we cant recall many of the names!!! All I'd say is just take your pick from the many places Skalla Potamia has to offer - We do recall (hazy though) the very Greek restaurant on the sea front (Flav... something!) has a cooler with fresh fish outside - The owner is local Greek and his g/f is English and both v nice - The menu changes so they will tell you whats on offer. Captains was nice and cheap with v good food and is always busy In Golden beach the bar / rest on the cliff (begins with v!) was also very nice for just a drink looking over the bay, or a meal in the evening with free Greek night on Saturdays. Not one for complaning but Alexandos restaurant on the beach next to Captains in the cent of Skalla is poor - Give that a miss - Food :-((( Service :-(((
Golden Sun / Reps Etc - Could not fault them - The reps v v informative on the transfers and v friendly (Julie and Alex ;-) - The transfer was v good with a 20 min coach from Kavala to the port, 30 - 40 mins on the ferry (with a sundeck and well stocked bar!) and back on the coach for a 30 or so min v nice journey through the hills to Salla Potamia. Just one word of advise - The boat trip Golden Sun offer can be taken for less than 1/2 the price if you go to the harbour in Thassos town - No need to book just turn up about 9am to get a ticket on the 10am boat - which are v small so not cramped like the large boat g/s uses.
Overall - AN EXCELLENT TIME IS TO BE HAD IN SKALLA POTAMIA - ITS QUIET BUT NOT TOO QUITE, AND DEFF NOT COMMERCIALISED LIKE SOME PARTS OF GREECE - NEVER SAW ONE WASP EITHER!!! MAYBE NEXT TIME - ENJOY - WE DID! ;-))
