First time to Thassos, and won't be the last..!. Landed at Kavala, bus ride and ferry ride and bus transfer to hotel, all within 2 hrs. The hotel was built in 2005, and is the big sister of the Louloudis apartments some 200 metres away. The hotel has approx 20+ rooms, and ours, (303), was immaculate. Spacious shower sink and wc in bathroom, sink and fridge in main room, along with tv, phone and internet sockets. A nice balcony which had views of mountains and the sea. We stayed on a B+B basis, and the food could not be faulted. Dinner is either buffet 10 euros each or ala carte, which was priced reasonably, similar to local tavernas.

The hotel was mainly occupied by eastern european guests, but the owners are trying to negotiate with Thomas Cook to have more rooms available. Thomi is the daughter of the owners, and she runs the hotel like clockwork, very personable, and nothing is any trouble. The pool is fantastic, quite large for the size of the hotel. Meals can be eaten inside or on the terrace overlooking the pool and sea approx 100 metres beyond. The bar is well stocked but can be dearer than other watering holes!. The appartments are run by George and sitori, Sitori is like your second mum, and hugs and kisses each time you see her. She organises a bbq every sunday at the apartments, which is 12.50 euro's each. Home made greek dishes galore, kebabs or souvlaki to follow, eat as much as you can. The apartments were mainly british guests, most of which have been returning there year after year. The area is known as pachis and is 8km from thassos town, 2.20 euro's for two on the bus or 8 euro's by taxi.

The beach is very good, with pine trees at the back to offer shade. Very clean and the water clear and warm. There are 3 or 4 taverna's at pachis, we ate at them all and never had a bad meal. In thassos town we ate at simi, zorbas, and el grecco, all fantastic. We spent alot of time at the ";drift bar"; up at the old harbour, Teao is bulgarian and speaks 7 languages and his attitude was great, free sunbeds on the beach if you drank there, although only the barman / waiter, he really made it special, and went to alot of trouble on our last night with special cocktails and always spent time talking to us. The central bar is a good place to people watch from, but beware if you have too much to drink the stairs can prove difficult, (i would imagine!).

We hired a 125 scooter from Thassos tours oppisite the dodgems, 120 euro's for 8 days, great fun and economical, 3 euro's filled the tank. The Greek are very considerate drivers if you're on a scooter and we had no problems at all. As for places of interest, the island is a gem, Golden beach, aliki, pefkari to name but a few are great. golden beach and pefkari have water sports available, bear in mind that pefkari is on a shelf so to speak, and the rock bed in the sea has alot of sea urchins, so jelly type shoes are a must, but don't be put off, the snorkelling there was fantastic. We found the panagia end of golden beach to be the best, intersting ride down on the scooter, i'll say no more!, and the shipwreck there was being salvaged as we left, quite interesting to see. Aliki is beautiful, the beach on the right was very busy, the one on the left was empty and was brilliant.

Thassos town beach is good also, and all the beaches we visited were safe and clean. Skala prinos has a good beach, we stopped at a little beach bar which had fancy shelters and new sunbeds, and was free if you had a drink, be sure to look at the turtles by the dry dock under the small bridge. Prinos market on a monday morning was good, with bargains galore. we had a couple of thunderstorms while we were there, which were quite dramatic, but never had any rain during daylight hours. Makryamos beach we found a little surreal, and having paid to go there, left without setting foot on the sand, all a bit too holiday campish for us, but looked ideal for families with huge inflatables for the kids to play on anchored in the sea. I have forgotten alot i'm sure, but if you like the greek, the food, and something akin to kefalonia maybe a bit quieter, then thassos is a must.

The louloudis hotel or apartments are great, but i would suggest hiring transport, if not to see such a wonderful island then to just travel locally. The bus service can be a bit hit and miss, and the timetable is handwritten, and is dependent on ferry times, but if you're there to relax and want to live the greek life during your stay, it won't be a problem. As i said at the top, we will be returning again and again. And if anyone we met and recognises us reading this, thanks for making our holiday so wonderful. Thassos is lovely place, the people are very friendly, the louloudis is lovely too. Hope this helps anyone researching their holiday there.
