"Rachoni Bay Hotel review"
Overall Hotel Rating:
First time on holiday with the newly aquired 'family'. We bought this last minute from Thomas Cook and were more than happy with the outcome!
The hotel is only a few years old and was generally very clean and tidy. Our only gripe here was the gruesome baby cot that was sent to our room after we asked for one. Not a big problem though as he slept on the bed with us. George and his wife were very nice and the maid kept the room very clean on a daily basis.
We ate out every night and did not experience one bad meal. The standard of food on Thassos is just superb. Sorry I didn't note most of the places we went to, but if you are staying in Skala Rachoni do try out Olga's food just 100 yards down the road from the Rachoni Bay Hotel.
VERY few insects over there, although I suspect this had something to do with the fact that we were there in May. The hotel had a mosquito net door which did prove very useful though.
We were very unlucky with the weather, although having a small baby with us it was probably just as well. A 5 hour thunderstorm gave us an interesting 2nd night there! But that's is the risk you take going to Northern Greece in May.
We spent a lot of time in Limenaria (I think that's the right spelling). It was our favourite town on the Island and because it is further away from the huge mountains unlike many other seaside resorts on the island it does seem to fair better for sunshine.
The locals are very friendly although unlike the majority of Greek islands, Thassos does not rely heavily on tourism. It produces its own crude oil, olive oil, marble and even gold has been mined here!
Do hire a car if you can, the island ring-road is excellent. We paid 123 euros for a 4 day hire (a special offer through Thomas Cook, which was 4 days for the price of 3 with Avis ). You can get it cheaper if you go directly through one of the smaller car hire companies but beware the excess!! Our's was only a paltry 25 euros.
We will definately go back there next year and at the same time of year again. Thomas Cook were very good, although we will probably book it all indepentantly next time.
