We used the buses to get around and found them easy & reliable. Tickets can be bought on the buses except for trips from the bus station in town. Single or return are available & inexpensive. For tavernas we visited Mousses, Thassian, Doukas, Zorbas & Pygis. They were all good. Mousses is only down the road & their bread is very nice as are their pizzas. We found them quietly efficient. Thassian was livelier & their moussaka took top prize. On our last day we booked a mountain safari trip with Stavros. We can highly recommend this trip which is not offered by Thomsons as the jeeps are soft top. The trip lasted a full day & included a nice barbecued lunch in the hills. We saw Kastro, the waterfall, the lake at Maries & drove to the top of Mt Yspario. See www.thassosoffroad.gr if you are interested & take down his details. We only discovered his excursions by chance. We visited the Monday market at Prinos which was not as good as we had thought & basically only serves the local people. The villages of Panagia & Potamia are easily reached by bus. Panagia had more to see, Potamia is very quiet. Theologos can also be reached by bus & is worth a visit. Of the bays & beaches Pachis just north of Skala Rachoni is nice. The bus stops only steps away from the beach and there is shade under the trees. Paradise Beach is a must, but it is exposed to the sun and wind there. Aliki is a delightful seaside hamlet with a lovely bay. Altogether it is a lovely island. We had no problems with wasps during our stay.

We stayed at Thetis for a week in mid September 2008, booked through Thomsons. The transfer from Kavala was well organised and quick. The apartments are less than 10 mins walk inland from the new harbour which is the western end of the town. Our studio was ...

Not a lot to do in Thassos town if the sun doesn't shine, and it didn't for 4 out of 7 days. The food in local restaurants was very good, though the same dish in different ones contained different ingredients. Pigis was probably the best one we ate in. The couple who run Rumours bar were very friendly and its a great place to stop on the way back to the appartments. For the sports fan all of the important games are on there, and the beer prices reasonable. We hired a car for two days to try and escape the clouds in Thassos town and were rewarded with some great beaches around the island. The island itself is only approx 110 Kms all round so its do-able in 2-3 hours.

This was our first time in Greece and although people impressed upon us the fact that the standard of accommodation is basic it was still a bit of a shock. The facilities in the room were just about adequate, I can't imagine you could self cater in there, th...

I last went to Thassos 15 years ago. It has changed. But not too much! The town is about double the size it was and it has extended to the east (it cant really go west due to the extensive archeaological remains - well worth a visit) with a new ferry 'port' and landfill car park. The old one is now car parking for the town. Car parking is needed I suppose, but not very picturesque.
The restaurants have changed too.. Zorba's has closed with its live music, and now moved to the town centre, where it is more of a tourist trap. not recommended. Syrtaki is good - on the beach. very recommended Karavagio (I think) - is new on the headland by the church. Limited menu but highly recommended for a simple lunch on the terrace facing the sea. (Visit the church while you are there - there has been one there for hundreds of years) Thassian - recommended - good quantity and quality and friendly too!
Hire a car - go to Aliki and visit the Beautiful Alice restaurant (the menu hasnt changed for 15 years but the prices have)- and more ruins.
Find of the holiday was the village of Theologos - dont know the restaurant name but go through the village - past the bus stopping square - there is a vine growing across the road, and the restaurant is on the right. Great views, good local cheap food (the best and cheapest we had the whole holiday). Very greek clientele.
Still think Thassos is great but will not go in high season again - it was too hot for exploring during the day!

Very clean - very hot (so the 6euro a night for air conditioning was very necessary). Played tennis in the early morning, swam during the day. Pool bar was basic but good, so wouldn't expect extensive menu. Salads / pizza etc reasonably priced. Good locatio...

This was our first visit to Thassos and i would highly recommend these studios to stay, the location was excellent approx 10 -15 minute slow walk to the old harbour. Most of the other people staying here were annual returners and i guess they will continue ...
