My girlfriend and I booked a weeks self catering, which was allocated on arrival. We had looked into some of the possible resorts we may be allocated and Vasilikos was not one we were hoping for.
We were especially worried when instead of a coach, they put us in a taxi because nobodyelse was going here.
When we got to the hotel after driving down a dirt track, we were suprised to see an absolutely lovely looking hotel.
The hotel is located right on an amazing beach that is ideal for numerous watersports. The gardens within the hotel grounds are well maintained. It was like a farm with the number of animals that roamed around!
The room we stayed in was clean, reasonably spacious and had lovely views over the beach and sea.
Hotel staff were exceptionally friendly.
In Vasilikos itself, there was not a lot to do. There were a couple of taverna/restaurants within the hotel vicinity, but nothing in the way of nightlife. The food in these places was lovely and was so cheap it was untrue. We both had 3 course meals with drinks and it cost less than £20!
We hired a scooter from a shop round the corner and travelled all over the island. Most days we went to a beach. We enjoyed the beaches in Laganas and Tsivili. A bus stop near the hotel serves the island well.
Most nights we ventured by taxi to Argassi. It cost around 10 Euros. This resort was lively but more family. orientated than 18-30.
Zakynthos Town is worth a visit at night. There is a lovely square that you can eat a meal in and people watch.
All in all the hotel was lovely. For a peaceful break, getting a way from it all holiday, this hotel is ideal. It's a shame it could not be lifted up and placed a little nearer to a main resort. As an allocated on arrival hotel we certainly good not complain.

We have just returned from our first holiday to Zakynthos and can't believe we got it right!! Our resort was just what we wanted very quiet and secluded, close to the beach and excellent places to eat within a stone's throw. We did not want to troubled by families with young children having none of our own and we weren't!!
There were two local beaches to us St Nicholas (linked to our hotel) and Plaka I prefered Plaka (only 50 sunbeds while we were there). St Nicholas has lots of watersports and is probably more for the youngsters. We had lovley weather for most of our 14 day holiday. Do be aware that the mosquitos are hungry to plug-ins and repellant are a must, however if you are bit at 1e a roll-on is a must from the local supermarket-stinks but works!!
The airport was as bad a expected but what the heck you are only passing through-we were badly delayed and had to return home via Italy due to not being able to have enough fuel taken on board.
We did trips via rep to Kefalonia (a must do) and Smuggler's Cove (lovely also) the bonus being we saw a load on dolphins (30-40) cahsing our boat the captain did a figure of 8 and encouraged them to keep with us-it was amazing and really made the trip. Smuggler's Cove is perhaps overrated as the beach although it looks lovely is stone (bright white) and very difficult to walk on the sea is not suitable for children as it becomes deep very quickly. However we had a great day with swimming off the boat (my 50 year old kid dived off the boat and a whale of a time!!)
We also went into Zante town with another couple (therefore sharing the expense) the taxi was 15e each way. Zante town was ok lots of shops and a nice church but I think we would give it a miss next time.
Argassi was the nearest big resort to us and definately wouldnot suit us-it looked too loud and brash.
Our hotel was pleasant and comfortable-sea view from balcony, excellant pool and pool bar (although drinks were expensive)
We mainly used the beach and took a picnic with us. We had lots of pleasant walks ranging from gentle to over the cliffs down onto to Plaka beach from St Nicholas.
There was the choice of 4 places to eat outside of the hotel all within 5 minutes-we found our favourite with local wine at 2e a litre!! A meal-starter,main and drinks was round about 30e you couldn't go wrong!!
WE will be back-however we would try self catering next time.

This hotel was lovley, but in a very quiet resort. If you want to go and have a holiday to do nothing its perfect, but if you like getting out and about then you definatly need a car. We hired a car from the local guy Potamia rentals, it was really reasonable apx 30e per day, well worth it though. The local beaches are lovely, were just not beachy people so didnt spend much time there. The sea is completly see through and barely any sea weed so was lovley to swim in. There were 3 restaurants on the main road and 1 shop, if you walk a bit further there was another shop. There is also a little dog that is about the hotel a little ginger dog called sindy we think shes lovely dont worry about her!
The only problem was there were loads of local kids running round the pool being disrespectful jumping on your heads almost very annoying. There was almost no atmosphere around the hotel so got quite boring.
All in all you will have a lovely holiday here and if your going im so jealous!
Have a good holiday!

The Golden Bay resort was an excellent choice, the beach was quiet compared to that of Lagana. Even though the resort is an excellent place to relax, don't stay put - travel around a bit.
We visited other beaches including Yerakas (Turtle Beach), St Nicks (for watersports), and the beautiful cove of Porto Roma.
I would definatley recommend visiting Yanni at his Coffee House in Vasilikos Village (near Ionian beach). He was amazingly hospitable (he grew up in London so speaks fluent English, Greek, Ducth and Austrian). Lots of good food and drink.
Also check out The Ionian restaurant on the Ionian beach, Logos Bar and the Three Brothers restaurant!!
Enjoy - We did!
