We were on a tailor made tour of Kerala and The Tall Trees hotel was our 4th destination of 7.

Our accomodation consisted of individual two storey apartments. From the front door you enter the living room, with settee and armchairs and table. There is also a bathroom on this floor and also a balcony. You then go down a spiral staircase into the bedroom. There is also a 2nd bathroom on this floor, and a 2nd balcony with patio furniture.

The Tall Trees is built into the hills of Munnar, and is quite steep in places, so not suitable for people with walking difficulties. There is an excellent restaurant on site. Other facilities are limited, though the walks into the forest (that the hotel is surrounded by) is worthwhile.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, pointing out wildlife and birds.

The town of Munnar is dominated by vast tea plantations and we visited one factory where we saw the freshly picked tea leaves turned into tea that we buy in the UK.

There are 2 national parks within 60 miles or so of Munnar, Eravikulam National Park and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. We were unable to visit either during our stay. Eravikulam was closed due to animal breeding, The other was due to industrial and political unrest (according to our driver.)

The town of Munnar is very busy and noisy. We walked around a huge market selling mainly fruit, veg, meat and fish, but also regular household goods. In the surrounding shops, there are plenty of places where you can buy hadicrafts and locally grown tea.

The town has a river running through the centre, but the banks were covered in litter. There are no regular refuse collections as happens in the uk, and the locals just through their litter into the river. It is a real shame, Munnar is in a beautiful location and it would be wonderful if the Keralan goverment could clean up the towns and cities so that these friendly people could be encouraged to keep the town tidy.

From here we moved onto our 5th destination ofThekkady......
