We booked a stopover of two nights in the Pan Pacific Hotel in Singapore before going on to Lombok for 14 nights.

We flew with Singapore Airlines who were fantastic, flights left on time, food was very nice plenty of complimentary drinks and there was lots of films, tv programmes and music to listen to onboard. The 12.5hrs went quite quickly.

The Pan Pacific hotel was very nice and was connected to two shopping centres. Singapore itself was very hot and humid with no cooling breeze so was quite a shock for the first two days.

After our two nights in Singapore we flew onto Lombok with Silk Air. On arrival at Lombok Airport we wished we would have taken Trailfinders advice and let them sort out our visa's before leaving the UK as the ";visa on arrival"; queue was not that long but the officials were very slow and we had about a 50 minute wait and the queue went back beyond us. Luckily our bags were waiting by the luggage carousel and once we had got visa's we were out of the airport in minutes.

The transfer from the airport to the Sheraton only takes about 25 minutes.

The Sheraton Hotel in Sengiggi is really nice though the food in the hotel is very expensive compared to the restaurants just outside the hotel grounds. We went to the ASMARA Restaurant for breakfast every morning as it is only a 5 minute walk from the hotel and a cooked breakfast cost under £4 in total for the both of us (compared to nearly £14 in the hotel)and most mornings we were the only ones in there. For lunch there are plenty of restaurants just outside the hotel grounds that mean that you can get lunch for about £3 for two people. For Dinner we used to go to either the Lotus Bayview or the Asmara but in the second week we got a taxi down to Cafe Wayan and it was deserted and did the best food and the service was better than the busier restaurants in the centre of Sengiggi.

We did three trips, the first was to the waterfalls in the north of the island the first set of waterfalls is about a 15mminute walk but the second set of falls is a 30minute walk through the jungle and is not recommended for anybody who is not that mobile as it involved clambering over rocks, back and forth through the river and finally on to the waterfall - the waterfalls are well worth the hike.

The second trip was to the south of the island stopping at a pottery factory, a weaving factory, visiting the Sasak Village and then on to Kuta for lunch.

The third trip was to Gilli Nanggu in the south. It is best to get to the island early as the sea is calm, there is little wind and the island was deserted. The snorkelling was amazing. By lunchtime another boat turned up with about 12-15 Germans on board so we went off for lunch. By midday the wind gets up as the heat builds and the sea gets rougher and the return boat trip can be bumpy and you can get rather wet if you leave after 2pm.

Lombok is a lot quieter then Bali and flights are very limited which helps keep the island quiet. They have just started building a new international airport that is due to open in five years time and this is probably going to lead to rapid development of the island.
