The Imperial Hotel is lovely. Even though it was half way through refurbishment when we were there (which is probably why we got it so cheap!!) the work was not intrusive and should be finished the end of July.

The staff were very very helpful, the rooms (we had a mix of 'done' and 'not yet done') were spotless, the 'done' bathrooms were truly gorgeous with stacks of towels (didn't see an 'undone one so don't know what I am comparing with). Don't take toiletries with you either as the bathrooms are well stocked with all you need. The breakfast is enormous (too much choice to list but cooked, continental or both!) and the drinks in the bar were the same price as the rest of Cork.

The 'done' rooms were worthy of a 4* rating easily and the 'not done' rooms were good 3* standard (which is the hotel's official rating). There is absolutely nothing to do in Cork except eat and drink so why it is the European City of Culture we don't know. Nothing opens until 2pm on a Sunday either except the City Gaol which a very good value for money waxwork museum/history lesson/historic building all in one - worth a visit (the only thing to visit actually) and the long hike up hill to get to it isn't too bad once you are up! We didn't mind there being nothing to as all we wanted to do was chill out and eat and drink but if its sights and art/culture you want don't go to Cork. If its nice people, shops, bars and lovely restaurants then go to Cork. Don't be put off by the non-smoking rules in Ireland either - half of us smoked and it didn't bother any of us (nice to come home from a night out without stinking).

We had a great time and would return to the Imperial if we ever go back to Cork.
