We live in Italy, and my husband has visited the Tremiti Islands, off the coast of Foggia, Italy, on several occasions, but this is the first time we have been there together for 20 years.
On the good side...the Albergo Rossana was wonderful, only 5 minutes steep walk from the port on San Domino, the family-run albergo has only a 1-star rating - but it is spotlessly clean, well-designed, effective air-conditioned rooms and friendly and helpful people. They are also a pizzeria, gelateria and bar, and the food is good, home-made and economical. Very handy for when you arrive, hungry and tired! At the moment, the owner only deals in cash in advance, so that could be a problem outside Italy for some people. Breakfast is included, and the croissants are to die for!
The restaurant Il Faro (The Lighthouse) was recommended to us by the owners of the Albergo Rossana, and was well worth a visit. The fresh sea-food menu was imaginatively and beautifully cooked, and the prices were honest. No air-conditioning, which at 42C made the meal a bit uncomfortable!
San Domino itself was a little disappointing - it was VERY expensive, and esentials like bottled water were exorbitant. The tap water here is deemed not suitable for drinking so that is a serious consideration. In fact, the whole island is expensive, and a trip 500m across the sea to San Nicola cost us 5 Euros return! To use the elevator to the abbey on San Nicola is another euro, so we opted for walking up the slippery cobbles to the top. A sad and deserted place. There is nowhere to stay on San Nicola, so you have to be on the last boat at 6pm.
Another problem is the transport to the Islands. Hydrofoils only operate when the sea conditions are favourable, helicopter is expensive and the ferry sometimes only visits once a day. IF the weather is bad, you could stranded there in this expensive place, until it improves. The scuba diving is a big industry here, and is well-organised, but shop around! Mosquitoes are huge, and the beach is tiny, but the water is crystal clear and very salty!Night life is virtually non-existent, and the atmosphere muted.
Verdict- Take loads of money, stay at the Albergo Rossana, and be aware of the weather!
