Definitely recommend this holiday and can't imagine wanting to go back to our usual destinations now (Canaries/Algarve etc.) Used to think the Lakes were for (even) older couples, but our 11 and 15 year olds enjoyed it as much as we did.

Hired a car for 3 days through the internet before we went. Italian drivers lived up to their reputation, but glad we did it and we got to see some of the other Lake resorts (Malcesine, Limone and Gardone Riviera) plus two small lakes - Tenno and Toblini, which are worth a visit.

Went on two organised trips - Venice and the Dolomites. Venice we'd been to nearly 20 years ago and didn't quite live up to our memories, but visiting in the middle of August probably didn't help. The Dolomites were spectacular and we're glad we followed earlier recommendations on this website.

The rest of the time we stayed in Riva, which exceeded our expectations. Lots to do and a bustling atmosphere, without ever feeling overcrowded even in peak-season and a really peaceful place where you don't feel threatened late at night. Spectacular setting with the mountains behind the town and the lake in front. Lots of cafes/bars and shops to wander round in the evenings, but still retaining the feel of the historic place it is with the fort, clocktower, churches etc.

The Villa Nicolli is tucked away in a residential area about 10 mins walk from the main town/lakeside but we found this to be an advantage, as we imagine the hotels such as the Sole by the main square could be a bit noisy.

The 4* rating was about right. We had great views of the mountains. The food was very good with a 4 course evening meal and nothing repeated over the fortnight. The Head Waiter Mauro was excellent, particularly in organising our daughter's gluten-free requirements. Unless you're on a tight budget, make sure you don't get the annexe, which is the ground floor of a separate residential block and doesn't have balconies or air-conditioning.

A beautiful scenic resort and a good hotel in a quiet postion but with hard beds. The only disappointment was the ";Gala"; night, no choice of menu but instead you have a pianist for two hours (and they make the meal last two hours).
The tourist office do a free guided walk of Riva on a Saturday and this is well worth doing, also on a Sunday at Arco, also well worth the short bus ride from Riva, as Arco is an attractive place.

The Dolomites trip is not to be missed, beware each tour operators' is different one. We also did the lake tour and Venice, both were well worth doing.

Verona airport is a disgrace on the homeward leg, very over crowded, great lack of seats and very poor shopping. When you get there, grab a seat upstairs and don't move untill 40 mins before departure, only then go through passport control.
