Sorrento is a good place to see every thing, public transport is in the town and the trains are cheap which are next to the buses.Boats sail from the harbour to Naples,Capri,Ischia and places down the Amalfi coast all worth seeing. Mount Vesuvius you can see from any view point. Trips to Rome are available plenty of places to eat and drink, lots of lovely narrow streets easy to walk around and feel safe. One word Lovely.

Sorrento is a good resort, the quality of the shopping is good compared to other Med resorts as there are a fair few interesting and high end retailers there. Also, there are many fine restaurants. It is really busy there, lots going on. Trips to Capri and Positano are a must.

Sant Agnello review

"Sorrento in August"

Sorrento is a fascinating resort, better appreciated by suspending any preconceptions we had about holiday reps and taking up the offer of a 'walkabout' one morning to discover some of the incredible historical and cultural features (e.g. the Greek-era watermill beneath modern-day Sorrento) that we might otherwise have missed, distracted by the bustle and bright colours of a city primed for one of the most momentous festivals of the year. The multi-layered construction of the streets and buildings creates an intriguing aspect from every angle (making for some great photos!), and the hundreds of tiny shops and boutiques in the backstreets heading down towards the port are a great way to waste a few hour - look out for the cameo carvers working at the front of their shop during the evenings. There are seemingly hundreds of places to eat and enjoy both the local specialities and watching an endless procession of local characters, international and Italian tourists negotiating the tiny cobbled streets and buzzing scooters. There's also no shortage of gelato vendors! The 150 steps down to the main port, Marina Piccolo, afford interesting views of the city as you descend and the bathing platforms at Marina Grande (although we only viewed these from above) looked extremely popular with sun-seekers. The staff at the ferry terminal (Marina Piccolo) were very helpful in helping us book tickets for excursions across the Bay to Naples and the island of Ischia, but there were also several 'information points' throughout the town and at the port where multi-lingual volunteers were helping people find everything from the nearest ATM to local B&Bs and local bus travel around the region. We thought that a week in this resort at such a busy time of year (there was a huge influx of Italian tourists, swelling the usual international tourist numbers considerably, during the week of our stay in advance of the festival on Sunday 15th August) was probably enough owing to the volume of people you had to contend with when threading through the streets, but we'd love to return at a quieter time of year to explore some of the parts we skimmed over, and perhaps take some different excursions from the Port. Having said how busy it was, however, we never struggled to find a table to eat in a restaurant and managed to get tickets for the most popular hydrofoil crossings without any trouble.

"Sorrento sights"

The scenery in the Sorrento area is spectacular, with beautiful buildings seemingly clinging to the cliff edges. Within reasonably short distances from the town are must to see sights such as Pompei, Herculaneum, Capri, Vesuvius, Amalfi - to mention but a few, and all of which can be reached by making your own way from the railway and bus terminus a couple of minutes walk from the hotel, and at a fraction of the cost of the Reps organised trips. It was our second visit to Sorrento - and hopefully not the last.

Sant Agnello is about 25 minutes walk from Sorrento, or a bus ride away. It is a pleasant little area with a train station, shops and a couple of bars/cafe's. If you are after night life, you want to be more into Sorrento as Sant Agnello is fairly quiet, but a nice place as a base.

Lovely exciting resort. Hustle and bustle, what you would expect of a city but very clean and no trouble. Only down side was the stray dogs roaming around, being an animal lover found this quite upsetting.

We have stayed in and around Sorrento many times and it is an attractive resort although the prices are what you can expect from a popular resort. If you want to see the sites then use the trains and boats eg for Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplonti, Vesuvius, Capri, Ischia and Naples. The tour reps will try to get you to use their day trips but we found travel on trains, boats and buses easy and Cirumvesuviana trains are reasonably priced and frequent. If your hotel is outside of reasonable walking distance from Sorrento centre then make sure the hotel has a courtesy shuttle bus. Otherwise as a tourist you will have to buy the overpriced local Costiera bus tickets (the locals buy bus tickets at a fraction of the price), and taxies are at a premium. When we did use local buses we bought an all day ticket so we bus hopped for Positano,Amalfiand, Ravello and in the evening for the late buses. We have had many happy holidays in Sorrento and intend to return (that's what the song says!!)

I went to Sorrento on 2 occassions, once when I went out for a hen party one evening and the other on the way back from going to Capri it is therefore hard for me to judge. I was surprised at the lack of pubs in Sorrento compared to Paphos, Cala D'or, Costa Brava and San Antonio - the other locations I have been to but when you are on a hen/stag do you still manage to enjoy yourself. We found that the bars they do have cater for the older generation but in the restaurants the staff are very amused by us along with other residents within the area. The Foreigners Club - do not go there unless your 70 years of age + this is not an exciting place to be!

Shop wise you have a wide variety and you don't have any of the staff dragging you into their shops like you do in Egypt or Spain and there are also a wide range of restaurants to go to which you can stay at in most places up until 1ish!

I didn't go to any beaches apart from my hotel's beach - therefore thought best not to judge and put them down as average.

Bustling resort, lots of cars and mopeds. Many restaurants, would take years to get round them. For value, try the Giardinello on Via Acedemia, and Emillio on Marinda Grande. Good food and settings, and cheap local wine. Avoid the English Bar, rip off, and Chaplins Irish bar, rip-off, and pro-IRA songs playing....

Good resort - lots to see and do - eating places were very good - little bit expensive but expected in Italy. The main road through Sorrento is very very busy and noisy which sometime spoils the atmosphere - we had a pool view room so nice and quiet but I know people on front of hotel say it was like being on a motorway. Got used to it but if any criticism at all the traffic should be more regulated. Italian people generally very helpful and friendly.
