We've just got back from the Hilton Sorrento Palace yesterday, and had a fantastic time.
After reading some reviews on this site, my main worry was the walk from Sorrento back to the hotel. It was about 10-15 minutes but the hill was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. It was fairly steep though. One of our party has a walking problem and she still managed it ok.
We had a bit of a problem checking in as our rooms weren't ready but when we got our rooms, we instantly forgot the delay as the rooms were fantastic! We had executive rooms which were massive and has a shared terrace with about 7 other rooms. The terrace overlooked the pools and the Bay. The view was stunning. We also had access to the Executive Terrace which allowed us free drinks and snacks all day. As a bottle of water at the pool was 5 Euros, I think that it would be worth upgrading if you had the option.
As the weather was so nice we stayed round the pool most days. On one of the days we hired our own boat for 350 Euros. We were picked up from the hotel at 9am, and driven to a village to board our boat. We then could sail where we wanted for a full day. We sailed around Capri, visited the Blue Grotto, and then had a few hours in Capri Town. From there we sailed for an hour, did some swimming and got back home about 5pm. It might seem pretty expensive butit included drinks, and we had a brilliant day!!
We knew it wasn't going to be a really lively holiday - like Faliraki for example, but on a couple of nights we managed to stay out till 2am so it wasn't too bad! We found a fantastic kareoke bar just off the main square.
All in all, it was a brilliant hotel and holiday - infact one of my favourite holidays so far.
We travelled around Italy for 10 days and finished our holiday with 3 nights in this hotel. It was a wonderful way to end our trip.

The hotel itself is immaculate on every floor. We booked into an executive suite which was a great size with fantastic views overloking the garden and swimming pools with Mt Vesivius on the horizon.
The difference in cost between the basic room and the executive room is worth it as you are supplied with free snacks and drinks between 7am and 11pm.
We had one meal in the hotel which was fantastic and suprisingly not too expensive.
We will definately come back to this hotel.
Cut out the travel agent and save big money, we spoke to people who paid twice as much as ourselves, though we kept that to ourselves. We flew BA from Gatwick to Naples and booked the Hotel direct over the telephone, three months prior!

Don't bother with taxis at the Airport, there is a frequent coach situated outside the arrivals hall which will take you to the centre of Sorrento, from there you can get a taxi up to the hotel. Travel this way from Naples Airport and save about two thirds the fare of a complete taxi ride, (£55).
The Hotel is very good, it is not, however, a Hilton Resort Hotel, (private beach etc.), and is primarily used for conferences outside of July / August. Check when booking that there are no large conferences taking place.
The reception staff are excellent and are hugely familiar to any questions about various resort ammenities. Breakfast, as is usual at a Hilton, is very good here, there is a huge choice and you can eat outside, on the terrace, overlooking Vesuvius - breathtaking! The Hotel has an airy feeling about it and the pool complex, (shortly to be renovated), will keep the children occupied for most of the time. The large garden is amongst Lemon groves and there is a free tennis court with complimentary racket hire, but remember to book well in advance. We block booked!
Our room easily held four of us without feeling overcrowded and we had a fabulous sea view with the largest shared terrace I have ever seen.
We had access to the 7th floor executive terrace where drinks and snacks are complimentary. This came in very useful, particularly with regard to bottles of water and soft drinks, for the children, during the day. The drinks elsewhere in the hotel are extremely expensive - beware!
There is a small plunge pool on the executive terrace, but we thought it more suited to couples and preferred the pool complex for the family.
It takes 5-10 minutes to walk to the centre of town, all down hill. The return journey will see you burn, the evening meal, calories - a taxi will cost approx. £8.
Sorrento itself is lovely, but we felt that it has more to offer couples. Capri is wonderfully chic, my wife commented that ";even the police are dressed by Armani."; Pompeii is a must, simply awesome, but remember to take head gear for children in high season. For something resembling a decent beach, (gravel I'm afraid), take the local coach to Positano, but beware, two coffees and two ice creams at a beach bar cost us £15 - hey! your on holiday. Don't book any organised trips, you can do it all yourself with the train/bus/hydrofoil network in Sorrento - honest it will save you so much money.
At the hotel, we booked bed and breakfast, as we thought the children would prefer dining in town on Pizza and Pasta - we were right. Besides, they ate substantial fruit and snacks, at no charge, on the executive terrace.
With regard to the overall the holiday, I would have no hesitation recommending the Hilton Sorrento, with some reservations, however, to the uphill return walk from town, this in relation to elderly and disabled guests.
Enjoy!!!

If you are going to visit this lovely hotel, we suggest that you book direct with the Hilton to get the discount for the children if you are taking any. The amount of money you will save will enable you to spend it on your holiday, also we suggest you go half-board as eating out in Sorrento is very expensive to say the least.
We arrived very tierd at the Hotel Sorrento Palace 21.40 hours on 18/06/04. This was after a very long journey to the Hotel from the airport, lots of crazy people driving, do not drive in Italy at any cost if you value your sanity/ life!!!!!!!!
The Hotel is beautiful just as you would expect a 4t to be and all the reception staff very accomodating. The actual room was very large with a queen anne bed and two single beds, with lots of room to move around in, not to forget the en-suite and balcony. We were allocated a first floor room I would have liked a ground floor one but we had the 'International Whale Federation' at the hotel so I guess all the best rooms were taken?
The hotel is clean and the maid service adequate, but brush up on your Italian to make your wishes known. Our children enjoyed the out-door pools and Kids club which was very good indeed and we did not have to fight for any sun-beds which are free along with the beach towels. The hotel is very expensive for drinks and food if you are not half-board we paid 5 euros for a soft drink and 3 euros for a coffee. If you want to go BandB then eating on the out door terrace at Sorrento Palace is a must with a fab-view of Vesuvius, but you pay the price for a family meal of four including one bott-wine around 120 euros.
A must for any family who enjoys good food especially 'fish' is the Emilia via Marina Grande 62 -tel 081 807 2720. This is one of the typical family - run trattorias on the Sorrento peninsula, featuring a fine range of fish specialities prepared on the spot. Be prepared to pay the price a family of four price paid 157 euros but a real treat and a fantastic night out.
The trips are expensive but we went to Pompeii for half a day - not suitable for children. A full day sailing around the coast Amalfi with swim stops in between
take plenty of sun cream and sun block very hot indeed. We actually got off at Amalfi and was charged 29 euros for four fresh orange and 2 lemonade take plenty of money you will need it. If you require the toilet stop here it is 1 euro each children are not free, that is for the public facility.
Sorrento is a beautiful place to visit and one week was more than enough for us it is very much a tourist centre with a lot of English people visiting. As far as the beach is concerned we would not go for a beach holiday not very clean at the beach it is a very rough coast line.
On the whole a wonderful holiday weather up in the 30's with lots to do and see. We did not venture to Rome the trip is 3.5 hours there and back and with young children not recommended. We would visit this hotel again but advise to book direct with Hilton they will also get you a taxi from the airport and back again. If you intend to do it this way it will save you over £900 english pounds and well worth the save. We booked through CItalia a very good travel firm, but no reps on site at the Hilton we did not need a rep as the Hotel was wonderful and nothing was too much trouble. Very child friendly and the Kids Club super.
We will return and have enjoyed our first visit to Italy, suggest as a first trip a lovely experience and once you have the feel of Italy you will want to return. We feel a trip to Sardina next time it will be cheaper and that is were all the Italians holiday.

We made our own travel arrangements, with flights by Easyjet, to Naples via Stansted, from Belfast. All flights landed on schedule. We used the Hilton website to get a special offer on accomodation. We hadn't been away on a 'proper' holiday for a couple of years so we splashed out on the Executive rooms.
This was excellent. We went with another family who also had a 16 month baby. You have your breakfast in a seperate lounge on the 7th floor. The babies could toddle around but were always on view. There is also a small swimming pool for them to splash around in. The main pools were also very good. They have a playground which is well maintained and the kids loved it.
There are free snacks and drinks available till 11 at night. Basically this means you can get lunch or dinner in Sorrento then live off the hotel snacks for the rest of the day. Also, considering it was 8 euros for a beer at the bar the saving was great as all wine, beer, cocktails, etc were free. Our rooms were the closest to the lounge. They were too far away for the baby monitors to work so we popped down to check every few mins. This was very handy at night.
The rooms were massive and very clean. The views were great - across the Bay to Vesuvius. It was about a 5-10min walk to town - all uphill on way back, but it isn't that bad. Helps work off all the ice cream which is a must.
Sorrento was nice though the shopping is quite expensive. As usual, do all the trips yourself to save money. If you have a buggy/pram though, Pompeii can be difficult. We had to do a lot of lifting and carrying over the rocky streets - and it is huge, but well worth it. We got audio guides but to be honest if you can get a proper guide then do it.
With a baby on board it is hard to be entirely objective about a resort. She loved being the centre of attention - the italians were very friendly. If we got a chance to go back on our own, equally I would imagine it is a lovely place to be. Just unwind and enjoy the view.
