Sun beds 3 euros a day, but plenty of deck chairs and umbrellas (both free).Unfortunately still need to 'reserve' these early.
Trips - 10 min walk to port and railway station. Easy to arrange own trips to Capri, Pompeii (train to Pompeii Stavi station under 4 euros return) and Herculaneum (train to Erculano Stavi). Can get bus or mini-bus from Pompeii or Ercalano to Mount Vesuvios. Prices varied from 10 to 15 euros depending on mode of transport and route taken.
Organised trip to Rome, although expensive (£135) was well worthwhile as a taster. We could never have covered so many sights on our own. NB Always take photocopy of your passport to historic sites. Several places (Pompeii and Ercalano) under 18s and over 65s get in free and 18-25s get in half price. But you must have proof of age.Good value here - full entry 11 euros which includes map and detailed booklet. We had a personal guide (10 euros each)who took us round for about 2 hours. He was very good. But you can also get an audio guide for a little less.
We were warned by the rep about pick-pockets if we were doing our own excursions. We took care when we were out but never had any problems or felt uncomfortable.
Sorrento - plenty of opportunity to buy good value, scarves, shawls etc as well as evening bags, shoes and leather goods.
Lots of quaint streets full of shops and bars. Only negative for the location - there was no evening music/entertainment. The only place we found was The Foreigner's Bar, which had a duo playing popular/ballroom music.
All in all a great family holiday split between lazy days round the pool and visiting fantastic historic sites.

Very good hotel. Excellent location. Pay extra for sea view otherwise you could end up with ";internal view"; - Room 101 to be precise - dark with run down outlook onto fire escape stair! Breakfasts good - evening meals - average (main course a bit disappointing - portions a bit on the small side).
Marina Grande - old fishing port - a but run down but some good restaurants. Z'antonios very good - sea food excellent.
Welcome meeting is a waste of time unless you want to go on organised trips. Pick up tourist info from Foreigners Club.
Easy to tour around yourself - don't go on organised tours.
Sorrento - very pleasant but traffic noise and exhaust fumes a bit annoying.Good mixture of shops.
Capri - approach by boat is not picturesque but a lovely island. Go early to avoid crowds and head for cable car to top for fantastic views and peace. Good coffee at the cafe at the top. Sail around island is worthwhile. Shops in Capri Town expensive - pleasant to window shop though!
Amalfi - very picturesque. Pleasant sail but don't get enough time in Amalfi as you stop off Capri for a swim and then stop in Positano to drop people off!
Would go back to Italy, Sorrento and Hotel Continental - only with sea view though. Plenty to see and do.

Overall an excellent holiday and the hotel was good value for money, small and frendly. Set at the cliffside with lovely views (if you pay for seaview it is really a side seaview) Not on the cliff as we thought as the Hotel Bellvue Serene is directly infront and has the cliff front view. The room was lovely with everything you could want and very clean (newly refurbished).
The pool was a disappointment with limited sundbeds (3 euros a day)however the beach is better, nice and breezy (10 euros each). The evening dinner was lovely, waiter service but very fast, dinner over in 30 mins (except the Wed which was a buffet and we choose not to attend). Breakfast is continental and the fruit juice is poor (watered down). Staff all very nice and overall a great holiday, excellent location for getting about Sorrento.

The rooms are fabulous. Standard rooms a bit small, our friends had paid for a sea view and their room was much bigger. What we didn't realise was that the extra cost charged, although it was a bit expensive would give them a superior room. Their view was fantastic too. The bathrooms in all rooms are really nice and the furnishings are too, but a bit more space would have been appreciated in our room. The service at the hotel was very good, porter to take your cases for you, very good/cheap laundry service, barman a nice chap. The dinner menus were superb and the wine choice was also very good. We didn't rate the breakfasts much, but then it depends what you like, there was lots available just not what I liked. The waiters were wonderful, very attentive and good memories. Reserved us a very good table for 6 for the whole of our stay. The cold buffet on arrival night was also very good. The pool bar did really good food too. All in all food not an issue. The whole place was terrific. Great location to the centre and to the marinas, bars, restaurants, shops, everything. Easy to do your own trips from here and saves a lot of money - get bus, boat and train timetables from tourist info at Foreigners Bar. We only went to Capri as it was too hot to do the other places. Went to Pompeii and Amalfi drive last year though and would recommend them. Direct holidays provided us with a great hotel at a great price.
Would definitely recommend The Continental.
