We have just come back from a lovely week at the La Pergola. The previous comments regarding the hotel accomodation are all well founded in our view. The staff are very friendly, the rooms clean, and the food good (apart from the over cooked veg.....aparently that's how they eat them in Italy!!??). There is a great effort made on the themed nights ie. Neaopolitan evening/Romantic evening. The rooms are cleaned to a high standard, fresh towels daily, and fresh bedding twice a week.

The pool area is small, however we found that people without children tended to go on the sun deck on the roof of the hotel. Families tended to frequent the pool area, which was big enough for children to splash around in. We have a blue eyed, curly blond haired little girl, who was always fussed over by the staff, particularly the girls on reception!!! We originally planned to go to a 4 star hotel, but was put off by the mixed reveiws, and decided to go to La Pergola, as a friendly atmosphere was important to us.....the hotel did not disappoint. Infact our daughter made friends with another little girl at the hotel, and the 'joke' at the moment is 'let us know when you are going to book and we will book the same week next year'??!!

Sorrento is beautiful. Yes the Corso Italia is abit scary......but try hiring a car!!??? My husband was desperate to 'do' the 'Amalfi Drive' in a car and not a coach. We loved every minuite of it, stunning scenery around evey corner. Yes, the Italians are mad drivers, but it is amusing watching their antics!!?? However parking is expensive in the main towns , be prepared to spend at least 3-4 euros an hour!! (We where told 7 euros in some places???). We had the car for 3 days, and went to Ravello, Amalfi and Positano. (All stunning). Ravello is traffic free square with breath taking views of the mountains. Amalfi are both on the coast, and both beautifull, particularly Positano. Be prepared for a hard climb down to the town centre and beach then even harder climb up the hill back!!

We drove up to the Royal Palace at Caserta, which itself was beautiful, but the drive up there not so nice (through some 'rough' areas of Naples/Caserta)and it took over 2 hours to get there. The sign posts leave alot to be desired!! Certainly not like the 'National Trust' sign posts in the UK!!??

We went over to Capri. Do it yourself, the organised trips are expensive. Expect to pay 25 euros return on the boat per person. The island is pretty, we didn't get to see too much, we only there for 4 hours.
Sorrento itself is pretty. The 'Drains' are great for shopping. We did the 'walk about' tour with the First Choice rep, which was interesting, but a bit difficult at times with a tired 4 year old!! Go and have lunch at the Foreigners Club, the view from the resturant over looking the habour is fabulous.

We will definately go back to Sorrento, even staying at La Pergola again. A great holiday.

We arrived at the airport and a cheerful First Choice rep named Gary met us. He was an absolutely brilliant rep, throughout the fortnight and was always promt for his visits to La Pergola. The rooms were compact but nicely laid out, twin beds and a dressing table plus a very samll balcony. The bathroom was very tiny however we did have fresh towels left every day. The rooms were not expertly cleaned, as the sanitary wear was not always gleaming like it should be, however we couldn't really complain as it was only 3star. The air conditioning is absolutely essential during July and August, whilst we were there and we did have to pay quite a bit extra for it, also putting our valuables in the hotel safe because there are no safety deposit boxes in the rooms. You would be foolish to leave anything valuable lying around in the room, as we had discovered on our return home that make-up, tweezers and 2 of my husbands polo shirts did not return with us, and believe me, we inspected every cupboard and drawer before leaving the hotel, so we know for definite it wasn't left behind by us. The hotel restaurant was lovely, and the food selection very good. All of the staff whether they are on reception, waiting on tables or in the bar, really are an absolute credit to this hotel. They were lovely to us all, even the 2 teenagers that travelled with us. The swimming pool is extremely tiny and not at all suitable for young children and toddlers as there is no shallow end. Sunbathing areas around the pool are also tiny so if you want to lounge around you need to go to the roof to sunbathe on the solarium area. Again not suitable for young children as nothing for them to do. To be honest if I had small children I wouldn't really consider a hotel in Italy if it did not offer a children's club as there really is very little to entertain them, as the beach can only be described as a strip of grit. We had a lovely holiday and would love to return to St Agnello or Sorrento, as the shops, restaurants, cafes and marinas are wonderful, the people great and the scenery magnificent, however would probably choose a hotel with a larger pool owing to the lack of great beaches.

St Agnello and Sorrento are wonderful places to sit and watch the world go by, from a pavement cafe or bar.(If in St Agnello, go and have a cocktail in Tony's Bar in the square, and have coffee and watch the poor waitress dice with death as she tries to cro...

Wonderful hotel with great staff and accomodation. Made us feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Especially good with children (we had a 9 year old boy) who was made to feel special.
Drink prices on average with rest of resort and food excellent and plentiful.
Excellent idea of first choice to have a ";walkabout"; instead of the usual welcome meeting. Really informative and made you wantt to revisit some of the locations. Made all the trips using local transport which was easy and cheap and also let you see more of the surrounding areas.

All in all a wonderful trip, one that we will always remember.

After reading all of the glowing reports regarding the La Pergola we thought that perhaps it was too good to be true. But no, it really is the hidden gem of Sorrento. The food was varied, plentiful and excellent quality, the staff always cheery and helpful, and the rooms clean and adequate (but then who wants to go on holiday and spend all of their time in the bedroom?). Perhaps the shower in our rooms was a tight fit but manageable with a little imagination.

Congratulations to First Choice in replacing the usual welcome talk with an informative walk-about in the town centre. The first thing you learn is, if you stray out of the pedestrian areas, you need to have your wits about you as the Italian driving is manic.

We did all of the usual trips - some by using First Choice and others taking the local transport. The Amalfi Drive, Capri, Pompei/|Vesuvius and Herculaneum were all as good, if not better, than we expected and in our opinion, all except the Amalfi Drive, could have been covered using local transport/ferries.

This was a holiday to remember - the stunning scenery and wonderful sunsets have to be seen to be believed.
