We have never been to Italy before so were apprehensive at first but having arrived at LaSolara late in the evening and treated with such courtesy and helpfulness was very much appreciated. All the staff from reception to the ladies that 'do' were wonderful, courteous, friendly, helpful, respectful and cannot be faulted. The shuttle bus into Sorrento was really helpful and we did not feel so isolated because of this service. Again the drivers were pleasant and courteous. The transport system from Sorrento was very good and inexpensive although our trip to Amalfi was disappointing because of the weather and the fight to get on a bus back to Sorrento!! Our trip to Capri (arranged through the hotel) was faultless and was thoroughly enjoyed. We will certainly return if the opportunity arises and stay at Hotel La Solara which we give a 5 star rating. Thank you to all the staff. Shirley and James Bell Marple, Cheshire.
Thorougly enjoyable two weeks.

The food very good and really you cannot miss the Gala Dinner on a Sunday. The room we had was a good size and had a sea view. There was no problem with the noise from the road at the front. The walls of the rooms are a bit thin!!
As others have mentioned all staff very friendly and a special mention for Nello, Marcello, Franco and Antonio x2.
Trips to Pompeii/Herculaneum, Mt Vesuvius, Capri and Ischia were all worth it (but the select tours which are offered are not much better than the normal for a higher price!)
There is a beach 800m down a track, but you are dodging all the mad scooter drivers to get there.
All in all highly recommended for those wanting a relaxing, quiet and peaceful holiday.
This was our first trip to Sorrento, and I am afraid the last as it really was not what we wanted or expected.

This was our first trip to Sorrento, and I am afraid the last as it really was not what we wanted or expected.
HOWEVER, the hotel La Solara was wonderful. We are so pleased we chose this hotel as it did make the holiday more bearable.
We had an excellent room, with a balcony so large it was like another huge room. Wonderful view of the sea and very clean and well looked after room.
The staff at the hotel were excellent, just as we have read on other reviews (this was the main reason we chose the hotel, and we are so pleased we did).
Pool area was lovely, lots of sunbeds and brollies, and a bar.
Food in the hotel - well we only tried the Gala Dinner as we were independent travellers and thought we would like to go out and about to eat. (This is our main gripe about Sorrento, horrendously expensive compared to other countries we visit in Europe). Anyway the Gala Dinner was lovely, plenty of food, good atmosphere and again super staff. Breakfasts were good, although I have had better choices at other 4* hotels, but that is not a complaint.
We would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone, well worth it and if you get a package even better, most people had paid about £400 for half board for a week, we paid 170 euros a night for bandb, so travelling independently to Sorrento is not a cheap option.
The reasons we won't go back to Sorrento. Well it is very very expensive. Pizza (and we dont usually eat pizza, but wanted to try an authentic Italian one) - well in Positana where we drove to we could not find a pizzeria that actually served pizza at lunch. Lots of long walks down, and back up, from pizzerias but eventually gave up and didnt bother. Pizza and a bottle of wine in Sorrento town cost us 50 euros. Each time was ate out, and we didnt eat much at all, it was around 50 euros. One lunchtime it was 85 euros (we had some fish, but not THAT much !!) Then there were the people. In Sorrento town they were friendly. In Positano they were distinctly tourist tired and not at all bothered, same in Amalfi. The roads are absolutely mad. We thought we had driven in some of the worst places for traffic (Greece, Northern Italy and Thailand), but nothing compares with the madness of Sorrento. Never in my life seen so many tourist buses. It took us 8 hours with a short stop of an hour in Positano to do the Amalfi drive, mainly becuase buses couldnt pass each other, bikes wove in and out, ohhhh.
Anyway, the hotel made it more than bearable, the weather was lovely and hot and sunny and we had a great trip out on a boat up the Amalfi coast, and swam in the sea near Capri. Not all bad......

Just returned from one week at La Solara and had a fabulous time. This hotel is simply superb. The staff, the food, the pool, the accommodation - all GREAT. Even at the pool snack bar they had linen tablecloths and napkins! Courtesy bus into Sorrento was very good although the last bus back was a bit early at 10.45 - another hour or so would have been better. I wouldn't dare hire any transport here - they all drive like lunatics. We saw one guy collecting a Calor gas cylinder on his scooter and another one with a passenger carrying a stepladder! However, we did the trip to Pompei by the local train and bought a ticket for 17 euros each which included the return trip and admission to the site. Don't forget to take plenty of water, sturdy footwear, a hat and something to cover your shoulders, it gets really hot and theres not much shade.
We did the boat trip from the Marina Piccolo to Capri for swimming then on to Positano or Amalfi. We liked Amalfi even though we didn't get to stay very long - had a quick look around, the church is beautiful half way up the hill. We usually eat out a couple of nights a week if we stay half board but didn't feel the need to as the food in the hotel was really nice, good choice, very good quality and excellent service. The pool area was immaculate and sun loungers were readily available (I suppose the start of Sept. is not as busy as July/Aug) Weather was glorious - the mozzies and other biting critters made a meal of me, again - take plenty of repellant. All in all, we shall return to Sorrento and to La Solara in a couple of years.

We didn't actually book to stay at La Solara but despite booking our holiday 10 months in advance, Direct Holidays rang us 11 days before departure and said that we couldn't go to the hotel we'd booked. They offered us a totally unsuitable alternative, which we rejected, and a few days later came up with three other hotels. After checking reviews on holidays uncovered, we opted for La Solara, and I have to say that once we arrived, our disappointment at not being able to stay at the hotel we'd chosen was very quickly dispelled.
Everything about La Solara, other than its location, is summed up in the Excellent rating we've awarded it. We've been to Sorrento before and always stayed in 4 star hotels but this is easily the best we've stayed in.
All the staff are wonderful and can't do enough for you. The food is of a high standard we've not experienced previously in the resort - varied menus with five choices of starters and main courses, and hot and plentiful. The wine list is extensive, and not as expensive as other hotels, with local wines starting at 12 euros a bottle.
The facilities are excellent. Our room was well decorated and furnished, as are all the common areas - lounge, restaurant, bar and poolside, and everywhere is spotlessly clean.
The only drawback to La Solara is its location - about 3.5 kms outside the resort centre, which doesn't sound very far, but the road is uphill and very busy and there are no pavements. Walking into Sorrento or even an after dinner stroll were out of the question.
The hotel does provide a free timetabled courtesy bus but the last one returns to the hotel at 22.45, which we thought was a little early.
Sorrento is a wonderful place, with loads of shops, bars and restaurants and is an ideal destination for adults looking for a relaxing time. There's lots to do and see and many places worth visiting for a day - Capri, Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and Herculaneum to name but a few.
Many people we met at La Solara had stayed there several times and we can appreciate why they keep going back. We love Sorrento and whilst we've greatly enjoyed previous holidays there, we've not particularly wanted to return to any of the hotels we've stayed in. Our stay at La Solara has changed all that and we can't wait to go back again next year, though it definitely won't be with Direct Holidays.
