Meeru Island Resort reviews (16-20 of 25)
This formed part of a two-centre holiday, Sri Lanka was first and then there was the short flight to Male, Maldives. The airport is a breeze to get through but remember NOT to import any alcohol or religious idols, as The Maldives is an Islamic state.

Meerufenfushi is to my mind excellent or superb in everyway. The brochures do not do it justice, it is beautiful and it's paradise on earth! The island caters for families and couples. However as they are at separate ends of the Island it means that everyone is happy.
The standard of the accommodation was good. I opted to upgrade to a superior room, this was actually a land villa with its own outside shower. The standard rooms are in blocks that do a look of Butlins to them, however as there a palm trees everywhere they actually blend in! You also get your own sun loungers that you can place anywhere you want. Even when the island is full you can still have the feeling that you are alone.
Residents in standard and superior rooms eat in the Rotunda. You are allocated a table for your stay. The quality of the food is excellent and there was also a good selection.
If you want something more romantic then opt for Jacuzzi villa or above as you then eat at the more select Meeru Village. This end of the island is superb. The food cannot be faulted and the bar area is wonderful.
What makes this Island wonderful is the fact that it is very informal; all floors are sand except in the rooms. The staff are excellent, the food good and the range of trips good. You must snorkel whilst you are here and if you can go and visit other reefs as well. The sunsets are wonderful!
Everything was good or excellent and I loved place. It was one of the most beautiful places I have been too and would go back there tomorrow, I would book a Jacuzzi villa, as these are brilliant, I got an upgrade for the last part of the holiday.
Meeru is great and I would recommend it to anyone, couples and families and singles.
Paradise!

Holiday of a Lifetime, Fantastic.
Flew with Qatar airways which were brilliant, very impressed, plenty of room, choice of menu, complimentary drinks, headphones, own tv screen, blankets etc. stopted off @ Doha very cheap duty free i.e 2oo BandH cigs £6.90. When we arrived at Male airport we were asked for our booking details and they kept our return flight tickets which we thought a little strange no-one had told us about this, we then had to hang around for 2hrs for speedboat which looking back was the worst part as by this time we were shattered.
From the moment you arrive on Meeru you dont need shoes, sand is everywhere, they escort you into what appears to be a hut but turns out to be one of the bars and they give you a very welcoming wet peppermint flannel (very refreshing)and a drink. When they've told you all the ins and out and given you your key the luggage boys carry your hand luggage and take you to your room 5-10 mins later another coouple of boys turn up with your suitcases making you believe they have carried them all the way when if fact we found out much later in the holiday that they drive around the back of your room and then carried cases to your door both expecting a tip we were told $1 a bag is the norm.
We had a land villa which was very nice clean and spacious fridge, hairdryer, tea/coffee, room boy (ours was called Gasim)comes twice a day makes bed tops up tea/coffee then again in the evening to turn your bed down making a different pattern with the sheets, I came back one morning to find bed covered in red flowers which looked a beautiful sight. dont forget to tip them (approx $20)at the end of each week they really do work hard. You have your own sun beds to take on the beach so no problems there. Do tip the Gardener who brings you coconut every day ours was called Rayman lovely man. We went all inclusive found the food lovely and plentiful again it is expected to tip the table waiter approx $20 per week, I kept a tab on the drinks which you have to sign for every time and I wanted to make sure they didn't charge any to our room, at the end I totalled it up we are not big drinkers but our bill would have been $850 for the 2wks. again don't forget to tip the bar lads every now and again a couple of $
Mossies was a bit troublesome I had loads of bites and then I had a bad reaction and had to visit the doc's for treatment after a couple of days were a lot better, recommended by several is ";Tiger Balm"; sold in the shop $5.
A few tips I hope will be useful:
1.Do take Coral shoes you will need them.
2.if your planning on snorkelling take snorkel etc with you they cost $6 a day to hire.
3. Towels are supplied even beach towels
4. U.K plugs are used
5. No money needed everything billed to your room, but do take small $ bills for tipping.
6. drink lots of water it can get very hot.
7. Go all inclusive. drinks soon add up even water. a few prices if your not convinced, Breakfast and Lunch $15 Dinner $19 500ml water $1.50 Beer $3.50 Whisky (sm tot) $4.50 ice coffee/tea (lovely) $3.00 coffee $2.00 tea $1.50.

I have been to some beautiful places all over the world but this one was indeed special. Many friends and customers of mine (I am a travel agent) have always raved about the beauty of the Maldives but never really wanted to go. The opportunity came up pretty last minute and we were originally booked to Kuredu, but the thought of a 5 hour boat journey after and 11 hour flight was rather daunting. So on advise from a good friend and a collegue who got back two months ago we swithched to Meeru.
The flight with Monarch was not disgusting but I must point out that going scheduled with someone like Emirates or Sri Lankan would prove more comfortable. Monarchs seat pitch is terrible for such a long flight (29 inches in economy)! And dont expect the crew to be happy - their main aim is to get there as I believe they get to stay for 6 days!! Nice job!
The 1 hour speed boat journey to the island is ok. On arrival you are given keys to your accomodation and provided there is availability given the chance to upgrade - at a heavily reduced prices to what you would pay at booking stage. We had booked a land villa and decided that this was good enough for us. Our villa was no more than 20 steps to the whitest sandy beach you would ever see.
You can either tan and snorkel all day or opt to do something more active (tennis, kayaks, football, swimming pool, diving courses - and too many excursions to mention).
My friend was more active so hired kayaks and rented a bike on several days whilst I just lazed about in the sun.
We made 12 really good friends. We partied the night away in the bar and hung out together like old friends chatting and laughing. This really made the holiday for all concerned.
The staff were friendly and obliging in every way. A mention must go to the supreme joker Saud and also to Sultan in the coffee bar. Thanks also to our waiter Ali who always had a smile for us.
The food was good but very much the same every day. They just changed the theme (or sauce) every day. Expect Chicken, Beef and fish, rice, noodles, salads and veggies. Deserts were delicious - especially the hot chocolate croissant pudding!
The sea around the island is pretty calm - with a lot of sting rays and sharks. The rays were always a bit of a worry. The water was shallow and very very warm. Remember a high factor sun screen - being so close to the equator makes the sun unbearable at certain times of the day.
The island is stunning in every way. I will be going back at some point in the future. 14 nights next time.
Do go all inclusive. Your bill will be sky high other wise. Bear in mind you dont have other places to eat or to shop for essentials other than what's on the island which can be pricey! USD25 for a disposable camera! Do try the Asian Wok for a change from the buffet. Small and intimate - the food is fantastic.
Thanks to Lou and Dean , Rob and Dene, Tony, Charlotte and Culum, Lee and Angela, Paul and Sue for making this a holiday of a lifetime.
Go and enjoy.

After a shakey start with flight canellations by My Travel, Direct Hollidays got us booked on a scheduled flight with Qatar Airways, which was a bit of an upgrade really!!
Arrived very tired after a long trip as we had to change planes in Qatar and wait 3 and half hours for the connecting flight, but our first sight of Meeru was delightful, clear sparkling turquoise seas and palm trees. We were in the standard accommodation, which we expected to be basic, but it was a bit too basic and we requested an upgrade, we had already emailed the island the week before to advise them we were going for our wedding anniversary, and they gave us a free upgrade to a land villa.
This was definitely more like it. It was a detached wooden villa (a bit like a sauna inside to look at, all wood pannelling)with an open air bathroom, this caused me much hilarity as sitting on the loo, with wildlife in the trees watching you is very strange!! but no need for air fresheners!! The rooms were spotlessly clean, the food terrific and plentyful with lots of variety, pasta, sauces, meat fish and veg, soups were gorgeous, and of course the sweets, the pecan pie was mouthwatering. The snorkelling was great although there is a fairly strong current on the east side of the island which if you aren't a good swimmer is a bit off putting, but the water only goes to your knees so it's not an issue. The Love Boat trip was great, maximum of 10 on the boat so you all get to know each other through the day. Swam with 12 ft Manta Rays. They are very gentle and don't touch you but huge. Caught tuna which were cooked for lunch, and saw dolphins swimming alongside the cruiser. It was a masted cruiser which was very romantic. a great day out. The massages in the spa are addictive, the his n hers was the best 50 minutes with a bottle of champagne to take away at the end, lying on your bed in your room at 3 in the after noon drinking champagne and eating pringles while you look at the beach, sea and palm trees from your verandah window beats soggy Stockton on Tees anytime!!.
The staff were pleasant helpful and very friendly, everyone would greet you when you passed them and nothing was too much trouble. If anything was wrong in the room they fixed it straight away. I mentioned that the Air Con didn't seem very cool in the afternoon, the same day someone was there installing a new one!!! Brilliant holiday, can't wait to go again. If you want to know more about Meeru try Meeru.co.uk, its a forum about Meeru, you even get to chat with people who are going at the same time as you, we met up with a few people we already felt we knew.
