Stayed in the Pergola with my family, we booked a two bed apartment, through RCI but when we got there we could only have this for three nights! we had to move to a one bedroom appartment with no view, and the kids had to sleep on the soffa bed.
there are many bars and resturants the hotel advertises, but they only open sporadicaly, and we had to eat out every night as they closed the resturants at 9 pm and the bar (only one open!!) closed at 11pm!! even at the weekend.
Not family freindly, and not very effecient staff, and they did not seem to want to help us out.
when we booked out they insisted we pay a ";local tax"; for the cost of utilities such as water and electricity! (stupid me, thats what i thought you paid a hotel for!) -a total rip-off (£90 for 10 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Two cool bar staff, Gill and and American guy Carl, they have probably left, if they had any sense!!
Not Recommended!-which is a great shame as Malta is so nice.

THe Pergola is ok but not what you expect of a 4-star hotel in the UK. The building is well-maintained and pretty as are the facilities. It is kept very clean.

But there were odd economies at the hotel. There was no remote for the TV in the room; the towels supplied were very old; the breakfast orange is cordial not juice; we were refused ice for our room one day; and, while it's great to have an indoor jacuzzi, its water needs to be kept slightly warm!

The staff, like all the Maltese we encountered, were very friedly for a chat and simple help. Yet there was a lackadaisacal view of real customer service. Three small examples: the barman who refused us an ice bucket was completely unhelpful; our maid left our balcony doors unlocked (at pool ground level) every day after cleaning, even though early on we asked reception to change this; and when we accidentally left the key to the safe in our room while we checked-out, it had mysteriously gone missing five minutes later when we remembered and asked - and so we lost the £8 deposit for it.

Beyond breakfast and the jacuzzi, we didn't use the hotel restaurants, bars or pools, but they looked nice. Breakfast was an interesting buffet mix, although with only minor variations each day. The 'juice' (see above) was awful as was the tea - one teabag for a whole vacuum flask. And there's one of those infuriating conveyor belt toasters which takes ages and doesn't do much to the bread. But the coffee, cakes and fresh fruit were lovely and there were always three or four hot dishes too.

Mellieha itself is small, quiet and steep. We walked 4km each way daily to the beach. The beach had lovely sand but was packed and dirty. The little food kiosks around the edges did nice take-away style food. Find the one which does sandwiches and have a hobz-bijt. This was a truly lovely sandwich on local-style, slightly tough bread of tuna mixed with capers, tomatoes and olives. The 'cups' of fruit mixed with soft ice-cream were lovely too.

Swimming was very good with the sea clear and warm. Starfish are there which is lovely to see. (But buy your snorkelling gear before you go to save money.)

There is a real lack of shops around Mellieha. We're used to Greece and buying maybe a little bread and cheese for lunch and a bottle of wine at 7pm. In Mellieha you can't do this easily for four reasons. One, there are few shops - they are there of course but not as in some holiday destinations with little shops on each corner. Two, the shops all close really early - at 6pm, at 12 noon on Wednesdays and not open on Sundays at all. Three, as mentioned, Mellieha is steep so unless you're lucky enough to be right by a shop, you have to be motivated to go to a shop - and there are no shops near the beach. Four, the overall prices were 1/3rd more than in the UK.

The local beer, Cisk, is truly wonderful. But have a drink at one of the few bars early because the town is virutally empty by 1030.

The local restaurants too were very nice serving very good food, especially if you like pasta and fish. Again, bear in the mind the prices and timing.

Lovely weather, nice enough people, great beer and food - Pergola ok - too many rankles and really dirty beach. We won't go back.

We have been to Malta 3 times. Last time we were there we were sat in a cafe in Mellieha and saw the Solana being refurbished. When we saw Choice's Holidays on the internet advertising the Solana we thought we would give it a go. We had to get onto Choice Holidays 3 times about the Invoice (didn't arrive for 4 weeks) then the address was spelt wrong so had to phone again, also only sent 2 luggage tags which were for one journey, needed tags to come home as well.

On arrival at the Solana we were told they were full and we had been moved to their sister hotel the Pergola, this had been changed without informing us but Choices HAD been told. We met the rep the next morning at the Solana (as all our paperwork said Solana)who told us he had just come back from holiday and he didn't know we had been moved he thought we were still in the Solana, if he had have known he would have told us at the airport (which wouldn't have been satisfactory as we would rather have gone somewhere else).

We did have a room upgrade in the Pergola to an appartment overlooking the sea and the pool area. This was very nice, so we thought, until we realised that there was about 60 students 16 to 18 year olds all over the hotel, who also took over the hotel. Screaming and running about corridors and staircases until 2.30am just like 10 year olds.

Food was rubbish. Cold, limited choice, no fried egg what-so-ever. friendly staff but obviously couldn't cope with the students and took ages to clear up after them, it was best to eat about 1-2 hours after start times, but then the food was cold and very limited. There were 3 bars but one only opened twice in 10 days for the football,(world cup) another closed at 5 and then you had to wait while 6 for the 3rd to open. if you came in at 5 you couldn't have a drink. We went to the Solana quite a lot as their bar was always open and the air-con was always switched on.
Had a great Fillet Steak at the Atlantil Boy at the top of the hill in Mellieha infact went twice.

We will be returning to Malta but not with Choice Holidays and certainly not to the Pergola or Solana.

We were in a timeshare appartment which was first class. Maid service every day. we had one phone call from the office to check if everything was fine, and that was it no other hassle. We had full use of the hotel fascilities. Three pools one indoors(heated). Two restaurents. The food was superb. A five course buffet each evening, buy two get third free, but good value. The staff were the friendliest people on earth.Entertainment was limited due to the time of year. A childrens play room with good toys slide ,playhouse, seesaw etc. This was cleaned and sanitized first thing every morning.Breakfast was also a serve your selfe buffet, good choice full english,or cerials. There was a cinema showing films every night and sky sports in the bar. Although it was early in the year there was still a lot to see. Gozo is a must. Its better with a car, on the ferry you pay on the return trip. Its a bit pretier than Malta.Just time for a cup of tea and a snack, try the pea pasties (very tasty).

The beaches are small are few.About three good ones.
A lot of history, deep sea diving, walking lots for everyone.A bit hilly in parts but easy to get round. The local service is very good and cheap.
The Mosta dome is a must see. Busy town center, lots of shops.
On the whole Malta is a small island and easy to get round. Lots of cruises go from Valleta harbour. Will definatley go again.
We flew with airmalta Very good food good staff. When getting off the plane there is a shuttle bus,be the last one on and the first one off, or the fumes will choke you.As in other airports.

Went to Mellieha as we have friends who live in the village. This hotel is in the middle. The beach is a long walk down a windy road although the best way to get there is to take the local bus - very cheap but a bit rickety. Coming back up the hill you are never sure if its going to make it! Mellieha village is very quiet although i believe the beach area gets busier in peak season.

A good bar to visit is on the way out of the village. If you come out of reception walk straight up the road opposite turn left at the top and 2walk straigt along. You will come to a small playground area and at the back of this is a bar which has regular entertainment. This is a family run bar with a restaurant at the back. Admittedly we went to it with our friends most nights but even if you dont know anyone there you will be most welcome - children are also welcomed.

Now to the hotel - we could not fault it. We stayed BandB and what a choice. Everything available - usual fry up but fruit, yoghurt, danish pastries, cereals - you name it it was there. Service was excellent. Rooms cleaned daily. Air conditioning in room. The hotel has outdoor and indoor pool (with jacuzzi, sauna) gym. It is part of a time share group but we did not once get approached. A rep was available if needed (we didnt) and she didnt try to flog us lots of trips. In fact she told us which buses to take to go to different places. Far cheaper to go by bus. Car hire is reasonable but they do drive a bit dangerously so watch out!I would definitely recommend this hotel and would certainly go back.
