Venus Aparthotel Qawra Malta

This hotel and it's ";sister"; hotel the Palm Court should be avoided at all costs!
Accomodation dirty scruffy, maid service worse than useless, floor not swept, towels not changed toilet not cleaned. Linen worn frayed and threadbare. Despite being a ";non-smoking"; hotel the place reeked of stale cigarettes -had to buy an air freshener.
Everything in the apartment was well past it's sell by date!
No tea/coffee making facilities these cost extra £5 to hire a kettle and £2 a day! for the tea, coffee and powdered milk and sugar -well over the top!

Food was at The Palm Court, well they called it food, it was appalling! kept tepid not hot, the same menu each day except they changed the flavour of the omelette and the type of sauce on the fish and the chicken, powdered instant potato!! only one other vegetable, no fresh fruit, fruit juice that had never seen any fruit again I suspect powdered mixed with water. Healthy eating? not here that is for sure; we HAD to eat out, and the place is notorious in Qawra for its poor food. all the local bars and restuarants do very nicely out of it I guess! The only regular guestS here are probably Salmonella and Listeria, cheese and butter just left out not covered ripe for bugs to multiply.Jamie Oliver would have a field day!!! Staff surly and unhelpful at Palm Court, reception did try at Venus but they are hampered by poor organistion poor managment and very obviously cost cutting by those in charge the place is down to a price not up to a standard and does not warrant the 3 stars it has. We have stayed in budget accomodation in other Mediterranean countries and all have been better than this.
The place should be closed down it is a health hazard.
Noise is a problem probably down to poor construction of building.

If you are used to living in the middle of a city then this area would suit you, very built up, busy, very aimed at tourist trade, if you want to see Malta then hire a car or use the buses we found the north and Gozo were lovely. Valletta is amazing, history, architecture designer shopping!
Maltese are helpful and charming.

I returned from there yesterday and can safely say I have never stayed anywhere like it. When we arrived we were staying in a one bedroomed apartment. The apartment was basic which was fine but our balcony overlooked a pool which had no water in and which was full of mould.

On our second night our apartment was burgled and a few items were stolen (luckily no cash or passports). Ours was one of three which was broken into. The hotel Manager did not seem surprised at this and one of the other guests had read that this happened quite regularly. The Manager expected us to stay in our room that night with the lock hanging off but we demanded to be moved. We were then moved to a hotel room. This time we overlooked a pool with water in it although I wouldn't have dipped my little toe in there it was so dirty.

Our room had a central heating system in it which had broken so it was on constantly and the temperature outside was about 90 degrees so we asked to be moved. The Manager said he would fix it for us so we wouldn't have to move but he did not so we had to endure another night of no sleep due to the heat. The next morning we asked to be moved again and were ignored until we refused to move from the Reception desk. They finally agreed to move us to another room which was cooler (although there were about 4 yellow stains over the floor!). The hotel staff did not care at all for their customers. I did not eat in the hotel because the food looked like it had been there all week. I was so happy to come home!

I would discourage any one from staying at the venus aparthotel.. Just got back and have to say The hotel standard was poor to say the least.

Malta was beautiful and the people we met where very friendly and helpful, with the exception of the hotel staff who were not friendly or helpful... except the tour rep (Rose) who helped make tours interesting and fun. We arrived on sunday room was cleaned on monday and that was the last and only time.... I complained to reception Twice and nothing not even bins emptied, very poor.. Also no entertainment at all not even a juke box. If you wanted any type of entertainment at all you had to go round to the sister hotel for that (that is also where the holiday reps where stationed).

Would advise anyone looking at the venus aparthotel to think again. I would not go again even if it was free.

Well firstly can i say you get what you pay for and here its very applicable.

On a plus point Malta is lovely - a little barren and derelict but all that adds to the history from the war.
Venus - well having been a very well travelled person (used to Greece in particular) I was very unhappy with the quality of the food in particular. It appears it is cooked at the Palm Court Hotel next door and then fetched round to the Venus. We found ourselves only having 2 meals at the hotel and then we chose to eat out. On a plus point it was clean / bedding nice and clean and room cleaned daily.I wouldnt rate the hotel a 3 star as Maltabargains do - I would suggest 1 - 2 star budget accommodation. lots of other visitors complained. i didnt however as we did need to curtail our holiday due to my Grandmothers death - I did find the hotel rep sarah very helpful in this situation though - very sympathetic and advised me on how to book my flights home.

So all in all Resort? - Ok
maltabargains rep? very good
Hotel? - wouldnt go back I must say - pay extra and go upmarket!

Before reading this review I must remind you that we always get what we pay for. This in mind, I guess we should have known better.

We took one week half board and although the room (425)was well worn the sheets were clean and after all we don't tend to stay in our rooms all day. The chambermaid only changed our sheets and did very little cleaning, towels were changed daily but this included taking our own towels twice in exchange.

The pool area was cleaned every day but is very small and if you end up with one of the rooms poolside you are likely to open your curtains in the morning to find people parked outside your door.
Speaking of which, we met a daughter, mum and uncle who had booked one twin and one single self catering for two weeks. They had asked for the twin to be ground floor as mum had emphasima. When they arrived they were allocated the one of the two rooms on the very top of the front building, the lift did not go up that far. By their third move they finaly ended up all three in a poolside room with no cooking facilities in what the rest of us named the garage as thats what it looked like. No paint on the walls, no room in the shower to even strip off. They were then asked to pay an extra £100 for their food.

This brings us on to the delightful menu at the Venus which we shared with the Palm Court, it's sister hotel across the road.
The Venus does not throw anything out, what is not eaten the day before, is put into either a curry or a stew. Fish is always covered in a sauce of some description as is the chicken.

The bar facilities are really bare minimum but is no problem as there is a nice pub next door.
For the £230 we paid we couldnt complain. If you want a cheap base to stay then the Venus is it. But go self catering, expect to eat out and you will be fine. Its close to the bus station and shops. Book your trips with Mary at Freeways but we found we got a better exchange rate when we were there in turista street.

By the way, the bus drivers on a couple of our trips upon delivering us back to our hotel, would say ";Whose next at Faulty Towers"; this was the Palm Court. After talking to some people who were staying there, we got off lightly.
