we stayed at this hotel for my wedding everything was perfect the rooms are large, clean and well equiped with everything you need bath and seperate shower two sinks, tea and coffee facilities fridge two queen size beds table chairs inside and out two dressers tv. the nicest rooms i have stayed in. the food is brilliant even the buffet food is better than you would get in most restaurants and there are 6 other restaurants you can eat in you just have to make a reservation either the day before or on the same day.we eat in these nearly everynight. we went in november so i was half expecting the hotel restaurants and bars to be closed and entertainment to be rubbish but everything was fine we traveld with two 10year olds my self and my husband my mum and gran there was something for each of us and we all enjoyed it and are hoping to go back.also i am in a wheelchair and didnt have any problems with this hotel.

"Fortina Hotel 4*"
Overall Hotel Rating:
The hotel is tired and in need of some TLC. The bar staff and waiters are a miserable bunch, they treat clients as an occupational hazard, not impressed at all, however, the maids and reception staff are excellent, cheery and helpful, just a pity this was not reflected in the other ranks. The food, eatable but uninspiring. This hotel should been downgraded to 3 star max. The location is excellent. Stayed 14 nights from 8th September 2009, on reflection I would not go back to this hotel.

"Hotel Fortina"
Overall Hotel Rating:
Me and my partner stayed here from the 8th-15th of Sept in a deluxe room in the 4 star bit which was more than we expected. We had a jacuizi in the bath, robes, his and hers sinks, 2 sofa beds in the lounge and a dining room table and a large bedroom. 2 balconies looking over the 5 star bit. It was something you would expect for self catering.
The hotel is suitable for couples but for anyone OVER 50!!!! We are in our 20's and saw nobody of our age at the hotel and the rest of the guests looked down at us.
The 4 star pool was used the most by guests but you had to be at the pool at the crack of dawn to get a sun bed. People did the usual thing and leave their towels on the sunbeds and not come back till later.
The buffet resturant was adequate. We ate in their twice and could not stomach the repitition anymore so ate in the al la carte resturants or ate out instead. The chinese was excellent and the staff were very friendly.
Overall it is a hotel for the older generation. We didnt come here wanting to go clubbing everynight but a bit of entertainment would have been better than none. The pictures on the website make this hotel out to be something that its not. There has been a crane situated directly behind the hotel for over 15 years so good luck to you if you get that view,

Overall Hotel Rating:
Stayed in four star side of complex 2-9 June 2009. Booked two rooms the same but on arrival got one with two queen beds the other with two singles and told that hotel full so could not move. we were on the 6th floor which had patio style doors but no balcony and room was adequate but nothing special we travelled with Direct Holidays. Did have a view of Valetta though and the harbour. stayed All inclusive so had access to buffett restaurant and could make booking to eat dinner in the other restaurants in the five star side, Indian restaurant was the best. pool and sunbeds were fine you can use the five star pool area BUT if on all inclusive have to buy the drinks from that bar most of five star guests seem to use the pool on 4 star side as well. Did not use the spa facilities (these cost extra and were quite pricey) However a man from the spa does massage in the pool area after watching for a day or so decided to have body massage took an hour was very relaxing and only cost 20 Euros. On the whole with the rooms we were allocated i would not rate this a 4 star hotel but did enjoy the stay.

"Hotel Fortina Malta our experience"
Overall Hotel Rating:
We stayed at this hotel over the new year period having got a ood deal on lastminute.com on an all inclusive basis. The hotel is centrally situated on the seafrount about a 15 minute taxi ride from the airport. Checkin was quick and courteous. The hotel has two wings a five star and a four star both sharing the same restaurants bars and facilities. Our room was simple but comfortably furnished, carpeted throughout, balcony, tea and coffee making facilities , a minibar that was complimentary and stocked with beer and soft drinks and replenished on a daily basis. Colour tv with the usual news channels. We were accommodated in the four star wing which gave us access to the main buffet restaurant which was average with a good selection of international dishes , wine was alsoincluded and was served in generous proportions. a spa, saunas, stam and various pools, all in all a good deal

"Hotel Fortina and Spa, Sliema, Malta"
Overall Hotel Rating:
you have the fortina hotel and the fortina spa resort both on the same complex. i stayed in the frotina hotel in a deluxe room, the room was very spacious and had a view over looking the pool area and the resort spa. hotel was very clean and friendly and as many restaurants in the hotel.. i managed to sneak a peek at the rooms in the spa side, they were magnificant in your bathroom you have a steam room with hydrobath in the bedroom behind the king size bed you have a big hot tub, on the balcony there is some winding stairs which leads to the roof top private pool with bbq this was absolutely beautiful..... clients can go on a all inclusive basis at both the hotels, there is gym and some of the best spa treatments in the world i would recommend this hotel for honeymoon couples in the spa hotel and a mixture in the hotel part, i would not ay it was for children.

"dont book this hotel"
Overall Hotel Rating:
Just returned from the fortina hotel and was disgusted on arrival to be given room 110 which had a tiny double bed when I had booked twin beds for myself and my daughter. Moreover the room was dirty and fungus in the shower and the hotel was smelly and unclean. In dire need of a makeover . The lifts tiny and not working properly, the lido pool dirty and cramped not even going to mention toilet facilities. Had to pay 400 euros to upgrade to a clean room in the spa and I understand this happens all the time. Even the spa was not 5 star barely 4. the garden pool had one toilet for men and women and always a queue. No beach towels until 10 a.m. tough if your up early. Would not return if you paid me. Go to the Hilton St.Julian a million times cleaner. This hotel is advertised weekly in national press, what a con.

"Disappointed with hotel"
Overall Hotel Rating:
We booked into the 4* part of Hotel Fortina, we did not realise until we arrived at the hotel that part of the hotel is 4* and the posh part is 5*. The 5* part you get a choice of restaurants, the garden pools and bars, posh entrance, better seating and cushions, you name it, it looks very nice. The 4* part is like the poor relation - plastic cups, no cushions on the plastic seats, poorer sunlounger pads, if you want to go to one of the other restaurants apart from the buffet restaurant you have to pay an extra 10 euros per person. The room we were allocated had a very nice view overlooking Valleta, however, the decor needed refreshing, the air conditioning did not work right, so they had supplied the room with a portable which had to have the pipe placed through an open window, and as the room was on the roadside we did not feel it was safe to leave this on through the night. Although there again, the windows did not lock either. The food in the buffet restaurant was only luke warm, so by the time you had got to your table to start eating your meal, it was just about cold. It must have been bad, as my husband who usually has to be dragged away from an all inclusive actually dragged me away this time. We ended up just having two lunches - the first day we arrived and the last day due to us having to leave for the airport after lunch, or else we would have had lunch there only the once. We did go to one of the other restaurants, but we were not allowed to mix with the 5* guests. I felt like a child looking into a sweet shop, or a lower class of person on the titanic. I love Malta, but would not go the hotel Fortina again, unless I went 5*

"It's great but it's not 5 star!"
Overall Hotel Rating:
Been several times and always had a great time, this isn't a top class hotel and I wouldn't personally pay the extra for the 5 star bit cause I don't think it really is! Staff are super friendly and sort out any issues quickly, but be polite to them, it costs nothing.
Food is not bad in the buffet restaurant but better in the bookables - the indian is great. Avoid the garden pool if you're looking to tan as it's in shadow from the 5 star for most of the day (this was a lovely before they built the new bit) but the lido pool area is great.
Not a lot of nightlife around but the bar isn't too bad, typical maltese and slightly amusing but ibiza it ain't! Can highly recommend the cocktails though! Some parts of the hotel looking a bit jaded now but overall it's a good holiday, would advise booking direct with the hotel as they tend to give the smaller and older rooms to one tour operator in particular (who are rather cheap!) - airport pick up service is good and overall they can't do enough for you!

If you are looking for a good hotel with a spa, this is most definitely the best one seen in Malta. The spa facilities were superb and very reasonably priced too...

"Hotel Fortina review"
Overall Hotel Rating:
We returned to the Fortina for the sixth or seventh time, knowing that from past experience we would thoroughly enjoy ourselves. We even extended our original 10 / 11 day holidays to 14 this time. Added to this, we arranged to meet up with another couple, friends we made at the hotel last year. All was set for a fault free holiday.
But... things have changed, only a little, but significantly. Firstly, we had to ask for clean bedspreads when shown our room. This was rectified immediately, in fairness to the hotel. The mini-bar to which we were entitled was empty. Filled (partly) upon request, but thereafter, we had to leave notes daily requesting it to be refilled with our wine and water requirements.
Room cleaning was adequate, but the maid would only leave inumerable bars of soap in the bathroom, never the shower gel, and shampoo - we were reduced to 'nicking' a supply from her service trolley in the corridor. A bonus there - there was a surplus by the end of the holiday for which a home was found.
To sum up, things are beginning to look a little tired - the 4 star section of the hotel is becoming the 5 star's poor relation.
There are many restaurants in the Fortina, but not all are available any more to the poor 4 star guests, unless a quite expensive supplement is paid. The ";La Vallette"; buffet restaurant was satisfactory, other than that we found many of the meat dishes almost inedible due to their toughness in the first week. For some reason, they were OK later.
Beware the gauntlet you will have to run upon your first visit to the ";La Vallette";, for under the guise of collecting your free Harbour Cruise tickets which are part of the all inclusive deal, you will be pressed to take the ";Hotel Tour";, which, be warned, is a Timeshare hard sell for the 5 star Spa resort which is part of the complex.
There are still some good points - the non-smoking bar adjacent to ";La Vallette";, with a second bar on the first floor for smokers are two. Unfortunately, the former, more than adequately served by Tony and his gang, loses its attraction three nights of the week when local Sliema residents move in for free dance practice, thus severely reducing the seating accomodation for we who have paid an arm and a leg to use the place ! Complaints at the Front desk produced nothing other the inscrutable expressions of ";So What?"; (But not the actual words).
The only solution was to play the famed German sunbed game - but you will need a 'minder' as well as the ";towels"; ! As a lone couple, an early departure from the restaurant will help. Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, be warned !
The view of Valletta by night from a 'Seaview' room is almost enough in itself to justify the holiday. Such history and magnificence on display. They are very popular rooms, and you will usually be offered upon arrival, a ";de Luxe"; upgrade to a garden view room to free the seaview rooms.
The garden and pool facilities are first rate, available to both 4, and 5 star guests from the spa hotel.
The resort itself is still tatty by modern standards, and can not compare yet with some of the Spanish Costas' resorts - but the island does hold an attractive charm, with Valletta being the main centre of interest. The people are friendly and great to get on with, except when they pinch our expensive hotel facilities!
So will we go back ? Not next year - we are going to Cyprus ! But Malta is irresistable - the year after, probably.
"Hotel Fortina review"
Overall Hotel Rating:
Well this will be our last trip to this hotel, not worth a quarter of what we paid and most certainly not 4 star maybe a good 2 star.
It started at Manchester Airport whilst chatting to some fellow travelers who knew the hotel well. They warned us that when we arrived we would be told that we had been upgraded to a de luxe room from the superior sea view we had paid for, dont accept this as there is no sea view and no sunshine both of which we were going there for.Flight and transfer good but on arrival at hotel was told we have upgraded you to de luxe room and after much hastle from the arrogant reception staff we got the room we booked albeit on the 6th floor. Now the fun started getting two heavy cases to the room in very old lifts that accommdated one case and one person if you were lucky. These lifts when working which was not often were quite dirty and full of cigarette ends (4 star?) The room was a fairly good size and had great view. However the room clealiness left alot to be desired I dont think the room attendant knew what a hoover was and dust must have been 1 inch thick under bed the bathroom was scruffy and unclean both were in desperate need of refurbishment.
We were also warned do not go on the tower tour as it was a very hard sell on time share within the hotel, this advice was heeded.
All round the general areas of the hotel it was crying out for a refurbishment.
The food in the one restaurant was buffet style and generally was very good but was at times taken over by big parties of locals, thus leaving the paying guests waiting for some time to gain access.
There were two bars open one where you could fill your lungs with thick smoke or a lounge bar which was non smoking this one being the entertainment??? area. The entertainment all week was very poor the same ones for three nights and all very average singers. As you had paid all inclusive your were reluctant to go elsewhere. The main gripe about this bar was mainly friday, saturday and sunday when it was invaded by locals. They would arrive whilst guests were at dinner and occupy a large number of seats thus preventing the paying guests getting in to the bar to watch the entertainment. They either had to resort to other bar or go outside.
Many of the guests complained to the management about this but they just did not want to know or upset the locals.
This hotel is grossly overpriced and not worthy of four star status and needs to get its act together.
You will get good reports from the guests in the tower (Timeshare) as the facilities are brand new and 5 star but come on directors improve the hotel and bring it up to 4 star
Malta as an island has much to offer and plenty of places worth a visit
"Hotel Fortina review"
Overall Hotel Rating:
After my 2nd visit to the Fortina Spa I had to leave a review, as this site is my holiday Bible!
My husband and I visited for 4 nights in March and I have just returned again for 4 nights with my friend. I will definitely be returning again.
We stayed in the 5* side of the hotel and had a garden view with an outdoor spa. Don't think I would bother with the spa again as after the novelty worn off you just get shrivelled up after 10 mins! Tower View room was bigger last time and would probably get the sun a bit more on the balcony.
The food is to die for - Taste restaurant (available all inclusive to 5* residents and a supplement to 4* residents) is by far the best restaurant and the best food I have ever had. Tom Kime is the Celebrity Chef that heads this up (previously Jamie Oliver's boss). The Can Thai, Japanese and Brasserie all excellent too. Didn't try the Italian or the Indian but feedback from others was good. All ala carte meals, no buffet for the masses (there is a buffet restaurant available but not worth bothering with).
As mentioned in other reviews, there is banter about 4*/5* difference and some guests complained that the 4* rooms were not up to 4* standard and the money has obviously gone into the 5* side. Cannot comment as I didn't see the rooms, but I would only book for the 5* on returning.
Many said that the 5* was not available to book via a tour operator, I booked direct and they handled the flights and transfers and did it cheaper than I could doing it all separately and very good service provided. The hotel arranged a taxi pickup to/from the airport and the flights were with BA.
Upgrades from 4 to 5* appeared very steep given what people had already paid, so I would again recommend just booking direct. If you have any problems with the hotel, the reception will just sort it out for you. You definitely do not miss having a rep, and they are very accommodating and eager to please as they want the repeat business.
The treatments are excellent, but again, they are pricey, it is probably worth setting your budget before you go or pre-booking offers good value for money, as you pre-book in sterling and everything is in Maltese Lira once you are there and seems quite a bit more expensive.
Towels are provided for the pool and plenty of towels are provided in the hotel and the maids revisit around 5-6pm to offer you extra towels for your bedroom. Also you get the very pink bathrobes and slippers to use in your room.
The minibar is free and included, wine, lager, soft drinks and bottled water but sometimes needed prompting for refilling, but was always done when asked.
I am a regular in the UK of DeVere hotels and been on numerous spa breaks and I have to say it is as good if not better as any of these - and I would say the food is superior.
There is a very pleasant promenade to walk along and some nice shops, however didn't spend much time outside of the hotel as went for a complete relax and only had 4 days.
There is a complimentary Harbour cruise and a full day cruise. The harbour cruise is interesting and passes a couple of hours and you get to see a bit of the local area. Didn't hear anything about the day cruise.
Loved the hotel, the staff are excellent - it doesn't get any better!
