the hotel is very well located for access to Valetta and coastal areas, as the buss stops are just outside of the hotel with frequent service to most parts of the island. fares are very cheap which is much better than going on fixed trips with tour operator!

there is a good coffee shop opposite hotel called 'peppi's' and 'cara's' which is downstairs. peppi's has a very good internet service for those that like surfing the net!

the rooms are clean but basic and all staff are very friendly and helpful. food is basic, but quite good, me and my mum went during my easter holiday and there was no one but 65+ in the hotel so the food was very bland.
i think it would of been better to go in the summer rather than winter/spring but the weather got better after the first week, as we were there for 2 weeks.
not a lot to do during evening usless you like having walks, more bars and clubs into st julians and paceville but buses only around until 11pm!

we would maybe return to Malta but definitely a different location. the hotel is fine just the area is too quiet for our taste.

Hotel was what I would expect from a 3 star rating and the price I paid for the holiday.I would add that although the choice of main meals in the evening was from 2 meat and one fish dishes.my wife who is a vegetarian was offered her own menu with a choice of 8 items which she ordered at breakfast and was cooked especialy for her in the evening. Also on departure day as we were leaving before the evening meal was served the chief cooked a lunch especialy for us.
The hotel is situated on quite a busy main road, although we did,nt find the noise any problem and is very near a bus stop from where you catch a bus to most places on the island, Walking to places like Paceville, St Julians Bay and the harbour is quite easy.
Nice little locals bar called the ";Nappa"; just up the road between the 2 hotels ( a pint of Cisk about £1.20)

the crowne plaza is a nice hotel, probably one of malta's better places to stay.I would agree with people who say yo either love it or hate it ( its a bit scuffy in places). The lifts to the right of reception break down all the time, go to left of reception there is a small lift in the stairwell. Rooms are spacious we had 5 beds in one of the rooms but in need of update. It is not 5 star prob 3/4 at best but staff are helpful and friendly. Nothing going on for teenagers glad we took pal for our daughter.

We booked the hotel direct and flights with british jet.com If you booked in advance you could have a family of 4 for a week for about £800. If i had paid the brochure price i would have complained but had an extra week in sun by the pool (which is lovely) for a lot less than the brochue was quoting. you cant complain a that now can you. Try Off shore (down the front) for fab sarnis and go on the alevok gullet its a great sale around the island

After reading reviews on this site we were plesantly surprised by the Hotel.
Rooms were clean and air conditioning worked very well. The rooms were cleaned everyday while we were at breakfast so we were not inconvenienced at all. We had a lovely seaview , which got better at night with the lights in St Julians. The food was very good plenty of choice and well prepared.

Staff were helpful and friendly in all areas of hotel.

Spinola Bay is very pleasant and we were in the Sea everyday (so did not use Hotel Pool/Bar at all)

Getting around is very easy on the local buses and very cheap.
Hotel is ideally situated, a short walk to St Julians or Sliema where we got the Ferry To Valletta which was only 40cents about 80p!!!

Nightlife as quiet or busy as you like lots of small pubs around hotel and nightclubs and Discos in Paceville which was about 15-20mins walk

We were there with 2 teenage boys who spent their time at a local water polo club Exiles which was 5mins away. They met up with other boys their own age and thoroughly enjoyed the holiday.
A Brilliant Holiday and I would certainly use this Hotel again.

Plaza Hotel -- desperately needs a refurb -- we had to ask for a clean room and were moved twice before we got one that was satisfactory -- still very dusty though - trigered off my asthma. Food is very poor - eat out! Towels thin .... were often actually threadbare - cleaning standards not like in the uk at all ... my daughters bed sheets had cigarette burns in them ... not done by her i hasten to add -- she's only 12! Staff are hotels biggest asset -- all maltese people were wonderfully open and hospitable .. the buses are chaotic but cheap and fun and plentiful! Do try them!

Unfortunately the hotel was of such a poor standard that it really did ruin our holiday .... beds are really hard and prevent you from getting a good nights sleep ---

Mellieha bay was disappointing -- very small and facilities not brilliant ...

Malta is becoming very over populated -- the beautiful buildings and laid back atmosphere will be lost in years to come - hidden by thousands of thrown up houses just built up anywhere ,,, what a shame not more care is taken with ensuring new buildings are not kept in the traditional style -- there are so many lovley old houses that need a lick of paint and some tlc ---the whole island seems as if it could do with a spring clean !

On the bright side .....
visit the Race course and horse quarter - its fascinating -- do take a ride in the carriages in Valletta -- it's expensive but a real treat , take time out to have a coffee in one of the cafes in Valletta , and go and see the memorial to the unkown soldier -- it makes you very humble to think that these people were being starved out by the Nazis - and came through it all right ... everywhere you go in Malta you will feel safe , there is little crime and no yobbishness -- everyone speaks English and will make you welcome --- if you have to weigh up the aesthetics versus this -- i'm sure you will enjoy your stay -- just don't stay at the Plaza!

We stayed at The Plaza on a half board basis. Hotel Foyer and staff pleasant. The lift was very small and noisy and doors were quick to close.

Our room, which was at the rear of the hotel, without a balcony, overlooked neighbouring roofs and some were in very poor condition. The room itself was large for 2 people (3 single beds), furnishings had seen better days and was in need of a coat of paint. With the shape of our room, we summised that there was some kind of shaft between the basement and the restaurant, which was on the 6th floor, because we could hear the clattering of plates, especially in the bathroom. However, we did have hot running water at all times and towels were changed as often as you wished.

The meals in the hotel were very basic. It is run on a buffet style. Breakfast consisted of 3 types of cereal, local bread, bread buns, cheese and ham. Toast could be made. Two choices of fruit juices. Tea and coffe were available out of flasks. We only had dinner at the hotel twice as the choice was very limited and, in our opinion, not very good. No tea or coffee was available after evening meal, however these could be purchased in Cara's coffee bar on the ground floor (well worth a visit, excellent choice of coffees, ices, cakes, sandwiches and snacks).

The hotel did have a pleasant outlook,if you were lucky enough to have a room at the front!. It was well situated, approx. 15 mins walk from St Julians, where we had some very nice meals at various restaurants and bars on an evening.

It is easy to hop on a bus, 15 cent into Valletta, the capital.

We did take a few trips with Direct Holidays, which were very good, our only criticism is that they tried to cram too much into the day, making it rather rushed.

We would certainly recommend going to Scilly, Mount Etna is a VERY impressive sight.

On our last day because we had a late flight home we asked for an extension, our room was not available but they were able to offer us a room next door, their sister hotel The Plaza Regency. This room was very different, at the front overlooking the bay with balcony, nice furnishings. If anyone is considering using this hotel, we would suggest bed and breakfast only and, if possible, ask to stay in The Regency part.

My-self and my husband chose Malta to get married at this year and also took along member of my family (lads 15 and 18, girl 22 and parents in 40s - we are 29 and 36). We found so much to do to meet all our needs. There was a small beech opposite, a bus stop straight outside the hotel that would take you to anywhere on the Island (ie popular beaches and popeye island).

Would recommend going to Snoopy's Bar at night (which is near enough next door to the hotel), bar staff so friendly. After we had g0ot married in Valetta, he opened his bar early so we could go in and the owner Edwin bought us all a drink.

As for the hotel - it was lovely, we had no fault at all with it. We had a room in the Regency side on the 6th floor with a balcony. I didn't shut the curtains at night as the view was so fantastic. My parents didn't have a room with a view but thought it was a lovely room are were very happy with it. The rooms were always clean and were always being cleaned. All staff in the hotel were helpful and very friendly. We went to the pool on the roof of the hotel most of the time. It was always clean and staff friendly too.

I have noticed that a lot of people on this site complain about the food and the buffet style. I would rather and most people we spoke to thought the buffet style was best - it means you are not hanging around for a waiter to wait on you hand and foot and then you can go and enjoy the night. There was always pleanty of choice ie 2 meat dishes and one fish dish with a variety of veg. There were 7 of us all together and not one of us had a bad meal. I have been half board before na d the meals were disgusting - not here though. Half Board did put me off because of previous experiences, but with getting hitched we could only go half board. But we enjoyed our holiday that much - we have all booked to go back next year where we will hopefully meet all our new friends again.

Arrived late at night and found clean nice rooms.
Pool bar friendly but not open in evenings.
Rooms clean but air conditioning loud and does not work well
No variety in food but you can swap evening meal for lunch 9either at hotel or packed)
Lounge bar not very friendly but fantastic bar across the road.

Sliema itself is lovely to stay in as away from the crowds but close to St Julians if you fancy some more lively nightlife

First time to Malta and we were expecting the same star rating as we get in Spanish hotels. What a disappointment!
The Reception is OK, got in the small lift to find broken mirrors held together with sticky tape and none too clean. Not a very good start.

The Superior room was large for two people (it could have slept four). The shower panels had mildew and we had no hot water for 36hours. We had requested a room on a higher floor but were put on the third floor where the balcony overhangs a constant stream of traffic. What a good job I always take ear-plugs! The view was beautiful but unable to sit on the balcony because of the noise.

The Restaurant just does not compare with any 3* we have ever been to. The so called 'buffet' is about 1.5m long, 2 meat, 1 fish, 1 veg and 1 potato tray. The desserts were on a side table and consisted of a large bowl of tinned fruit salad (they had cornered the market as it was on most nights) plus a cream sponge. The same type of cheese and savoury biscuit every night. No icecream, no yoghourt, no choice! No ice for drinks either.
However, for extra special icecreams, coffees and cakes visit Cara's which is open to the public but part of the hotel complex. The staff are brilliant and so are the goodies!!

There is a pleasant park opposite with a couple of bars that serve excellent breakfasts - we even gave up on the hotel variety (you have to pay extra for a cooked breakfast so you might as well get a good one).Coffee and Tea are served from vacuum flasks!

Very disappointing - will we go back? - no chance.

We have just returned from an excellent holiday at the Plaza Regency, Sliema. There were five adults ranging in age from 27 to 58. This is the third time that my husband and I have stayed at the Plaza Hotel. This is the first time that we have stayed in the Regency section.

Our daughter and son-in-law, and my husband and I had rooms next to each other with sea views over Spinola Bay, and my brother had a single room at the back - he did have a window at least. Our views were absolutely stunning (we were on the fifth floor). The hotel is ideally placed to let you walk into either Sliema town centre or Spinola Bay and St. Julians (twenty to thirty minutes walk at a reasonably slow pace). If you are looking for good food which is not cordon bleu then the meals are more than adequate, with large helpings, and anyway if you really want excellent food there are superb restaurants where you can really have outstanding food at a very reasonable price. Our favourite is La Maltiya in St. Julians (fish speciality)- the pavements and roads are being dug up at the moment though.

The pool is spotless, the roof bar is friendly and relaxed, the ground floor bar is relaxed with music some nights (not really our cup of tea), we preferred the roof bar with its excellent views. The rooms are spotless, and the staff very friendly. One word of caution. The clientele tends to be mostly couples in their sixties. This did not bother us in the least not even our daughter and her husband. There were some children, but not many and they were extremely well behaved.

If you are looking for a really well run, clean, well situated, good hotel with excellent views, and friendly staff, you honestly can't beat the Plaza/Plaza Regency. We shall definitely return.

Like other visitors to this Hotel I had a good 14 Day holiday, but the cuisine in this establishment is poor. The Hotel staff are generally pleasant and helpfull and the rooms are good, clean and serviced daily to a reasonable standard. I had a twin corner room on the forth floor overlooking the bay, it was roomy and confortable, the views were stunning. My only real critism of this hotel is the noise from the busy main road ( Well you expect that if you stay on a major route in a busy populated area) and the food which really lets it down.

The breakfast is just adequate with no variation. The Evening meal was buffet style(every night): Salad bar / salty soup - Pasta overcooked with poor sauce - and a choice of three main meals, There is usually a fish and two meats. Now I must confess to being a bit of a foodie and spend about an hour everynight preparing my evening meal, so I am used to quality food from fine ingredients. The ingredients in this hotel were OK i.e the chefs cover budget was not to low, but they ruined everything. The fish was overcooked to the point of being solid, the meats were always overcooked resulting in dishes like cottage pie the day after noeone ate the beef, and the vegatables were boiled to the point of being baby food. After a few nights I would have killed for fresh fruit and veg. I did not see a piece of fresh fruit or a green/red pepper or a green salad in two weeks. On the plus side my bar bill for my stay was less than £10.00 - My usual wine bill is £100 a week, but when eating in a canteen the lack of atmosphere meant that I was not prepared to pay corkage! Having said that I did not starve and the hotel rate was not much more that £250 a week so you get what you pay for.

If this hotel improved its Restaurant by 25% the payback in wine sales alone would increase there profit margin I am sure.

I suspect that this place is resting on its laurels catering for the 60+ UK clients who go every year and expect nothing more than meat and two soggy veg. They seemed happy which is why some of the reviews say good food.

Like others on this and other sites I would recormend this Hotel for B and B Only.

Great Location, and talking to others about Maltese hotels I feel I could have had a much worse experience.

I have just returned from Planet Pensioner and it was quite an experience! My parents go to Malta for three or four weeks in Feb/March every year and we normally spend a week or ten days there with them. This year I had to go alone as my husband was up to his neck in work and so decided to stay in the same hotel as my parents.

The hotel itself is fine - a bit tired, dated and in need of a refurb - but spotlessly clean and with wonderful views across the bay to St Julians. My room (a twin upgraded for sole occupancy) was excellent, it was on a corner with two balconies - ask for the 31 rooms if you want one of them. You do have to take your own travel kettle as there are no tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms.

The check in was fine, if a bit formal. The lift is tiny and the doors close so fast you barely have time to get in before they snap! The view from my room the first morning was magnificent and I was very happy with the prospect of the week ahead.

However, breakfast was to come. The fruit ";juice"; was actually orange or grapefruit squash, there was a choice of cornflakes, branflakes, sugar pops or ";muesli"; (not much in the way of fruit or nuts in that), followed by toast (you make your own), Maltese bread, rolls, processed ham and cheese, vegetable oil spread and cheap jam. It transpired that a cooked breakfast was available at a supplement. Tea and coffee is available in huge catering style flasks.

Ah well, there are lots of cafes in the vicinity. Dinner was another revelation - the salad starter was OK, just as well as the main course was out of the question and I ended up having two starters instead. There was then a choice of a gateau, tinned fruit salad or more processed cheese (two kinds this time, the new one was the taste and consistency of soap) and biscuits. No coffee - that's available in the lounge and has to be paid for separately.

The following evening the pasta starter bore a startling resemblance to wallpaper paste and another meal consisted of a large helping of a salad starter. The puddings remained the same throughout the week. To add insult to injury, the wine on offer was mediocre to say the least and priced at LM2.60 a bottle; it was on the supermarket shelf at 70c!

The staff in the dining room are variable, some of them are charming, courteous and customer focused, others are rude and simply couldn't care less - to the point of starting to clean with a particularly pungent product while people were still trying to eat breakfast!

The reason for the appalling food struck me on my second day - the hotel owns the coffee shop, Caras, on the front where the food is excellent and the staff delightful. Clearly the absence of anything worth eating in the dining room is a cunning ploy to take your money off you in the coffee shop. And I have to say it works very well!

During the week I had clean sheets three times and clean towels every day (despite hanging them up rather than putting them in the bath). I'd recommend the hotel for the views and cleanliness but only on a bed and breakfast basis and then skip the breakfast and have one worth eating elsewhere.

It really is a shame that the food is so awful - and even the taxi driver who took me to the airport knew how bad it was - as otherwise it's a nice place to stay, especially I imagine if you're over 65.

Having read many of the reviews of this hotel on this site I was not expecting grest things.
First of all if you book a three star hotel,a three star hotel is what you will get.

Anyway back to malta, which is such a lovely country with hardly any crime litter or yobs on the streets you really dont want to come home.I know it looks a bit run down but it still looks less run down then some of our inner cites.

The best thing about this holiday apart from the endless sunshine,is the people and nothing is to much trouble, which is something you really miss when coming home.

We have recently returned from Malta, staying at Crowne Plaza Sliema on a Bed and Breakfast basis. The room with a sea view was excellent- pure luxury for us after our previous visit to La Vallette in St.Julians! The breakfast was second to none, plenty of choice and well presented, and the staff were wonderful. There was English TV too which we didnt expect albeit only one channel besides Sky News! Be wary of Pay TV as you pay for 24hrs if required, but we only got 40mins, although this was duly rectified by the Manager with no trouble.

Although we were both ill for part of our holiday spending a lot of time confined to bed, the maids still managed to change our bed linen 3 times during our weeks stay( a bit of a mean feat considering that most of the time there was one of us in it)The phone in the room was a bit of a rip-off as we were charged 90cents for a 1 minute call but when using the call box the cost was 10cents for 3mins.We will certainly be returning to Crowne Plaza in the near future and would recommend it to anyone in need of a chill-out holiday
