Very old fashioned hotel in need of refurbishment, though very clean. Very good waiter service for breakfast and dinner and decent snacks by the pool at lunch. AI drinks and variety of food etc were good. The views are awful as it is in a really built up area and ours looked out on to water tanks and a building site. The one thing which ruined the holiday for us was the air conditioning which did not work - made various complaints to the manager and it was repaired but would break again after a day which totally ruined the holiday. We had booked this AI hotel as it purported to include air conditioning which was vital in a country this hot during the school holidays with two young children, though the management did not seem to understand this.

There was also very little entertainment - a pianist once a week and a disco once a week aimed at older people and there were no other bars/childrens entertainment in the vicinity to walk to. Our children were very bored in the evening - we found a couple of rusty swings a short walk away. The hotel pool (not actually within the hotel grounds but a 5 min walk away) is good but though told on booking it was just for hotel guests, found this to be totally untrue. Anyone can walk in and pay which made the place way too busy for small children - a lot of students would do this though the worst were the locals and their holidaying families/friends who just took over the pool and the sunbeds.

The resort is more suited to couples, singles or older families as the younger ones do start to miss not having a beach. It would be an ideal short city break for shopping as there a good variety of famous names. Though Sliema itself is very hot and very dusty.

If you like cold boiled eggs for breakfast you'll enjoy it. There is a menu for an English breakfast which includes fried eggs, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage etc. Apart from the bacon this is the best option. The staff are very good and make you welcome.

The beach club which I understood to be for the exclusive use of hotel guests, is not. More often than not, Maltese families far outnumber hotel guests and we did not feel comfortable in this situation, with lots of children in the pool.
The sunbeds and umbrellas were in various states of disrepair which we found unacceptable. Bits of wood were hammered into the holes supporting the umbrella poles and the beds had never seen soap and water. The charge for a sunbed, which I believe was only introduced this year, was LM1. There was no charge for deckchairs. If you are all inclusive it is free.

All routes to the harbour and promenade areas in Sliema are downhill, which is great. But remember you have to climb them going back and with the heat and humidity, specially during June/July, it is extemely taxing.
Sliema is very busy at all times of the day and the number of cars on the roads is an issue which needs to be addressed. It is a nightmare trying to cross a road sometimes and I would not like to be a driver after witnessing first hand the standard of driving here.

Would we go back to Malta. The answer is NO.
The exchange rate is ridiculous. The best rate we could get was 62 cents to the pound. So for every £100 sterling you receive LM 62 pounds.
A pint of Fosters beer was Lm 1.60, which in english money is £2.77. So if you like a drink don't go to Malta. If you go all inclusive you are limited to the local brews and these are cr*p.
No. I'm sorry but Malta will never see us here again.

First visit to Malta and also the last.

Unfortunately the weather was the worst for 24 years but the Hotel Plevna was even worse. This hotel is situated in a dirty side road with no proper sea views to the rooms. The other holidaymakers on the coach which dropped us at the hotel (who were going on to different destinations) were saying ";Good God! Why have we stopped here? What a dreadful place etc. etc.)

The first room we were offered had a small balcony with views onto dirty rooftops containing stagnant water tanks; the second overlooked a busy street. Both rooms were very basic and dusty. The bathrooms were very unappealing.

During our stay there was a sewage smell coming from the lift shaft which we were told by management was a broken soil pipe, but employees informed us the smell had been there for years! The lift shaft was immediately next to the dining room which made it very unpleasant for dining and would have been closed by the environmental health department if it had been in England.

The food was mainly self-service with very little choice. The cooked breakfast was presented on a small tea plate comprising one fried egg, one small streaky rasher and one mini sausage plus 5 baked beans! Although we were half-board we found the food so poor that we ate out after the first couple of days therefore making our holiday more expensive. Food all around the island was fresh, cheap, well prepared and presented, and the Maltese friendly and polite.

We hired a car for the duration of our stay and did not leave any part of the island uncovered - beware the dreadful drivers, Malta is notorious for them - but
we did not consider the island to be as pretty as others in the med, the flat roofed sandstone houses were unattractive and dirty unlike the whitewashed and red roofed ones in the Ballearics for example.

Sliema was a good base although the island is small so everywhere is within easy reach.

Just beware of the Plevna Hotel!
