Although this hotel seems as if it belongs to a different era (probably the 1980s) it really is not as bad as people say. I stayed there April 19th-May 3rd 2008 with Chevron, and Yes there is a odd smell at times, yes, the hotel is in a slight need of refurbishment and yes somethings do not work but the basics are there and I was more than happy to put up with these minor faults. what do people expect when they pay next to nothing? It is about time these people stopped moaning, its not as if they contribute a lot to the Maltese tourism industry anyway. For me, The Food was fantastic all the time and there was a good choice of main dishes. ALL the staff do everything they can to help you. A special mention for Waitor Charles and the Chef Nicky who are legends. Hotel has a bar, swimming pool and sun area (which I didn't use but they looked ok) and rooms with balconies are availiable too. For Car Hire, Parking on Sir Adrian Dingli Street is not good and I imagine it would be almost impossible in summer, parking and walking or bussing is probably the better option if you are there for a holiday. For me though, no complaints at all really and I would definately consider this hotel again if I need a cheaper option.
Sliema is the same tourist area it has always been with nothing much changing apart from the increase in empty buildings, building sights and traffic. The promenade is good for walks although mind out for dog dirt and the shops on the front are actually be...

For the last 5 years we have been staying at the Metropole because , frankly we enjoyed our stay every time and after the first time the staff began to reconise us and gave us that lovely warm Maltese welcome. The rooms were always clean cool and well maintained.
The food was always excellent and we had no reason to complain.
This year something seemed to be wrong and we couldn't put our fingers on it. Then we went for one of our walks around the back streets and we saw it! Behind the hotel was a sign to say that planning permission was being saught to demolish the hotel and erect a residence block!
So now we had found the reason for the underling change, the sparkle has gone, the cracks are begining to show. The staff are putting on a brave face but with the employment situation in Malta there is not much hope.
Don't get me wrong we still enjoyed our stay but their management are making changes, for example they are going to charge for the Air conditioning during the day in August!!! I've never heard of that before. And as they are intending to demolish the building do you think they are going to spend any money on it's upkeep?
Metropole Hotel is BASIC accomdation. Nothing fancy but clean and servicable. Good location to Strand/buses/St Julians/Paceville/Valletta etc. Hotel lift is small and AC is turned off from 0900-1600. Breakfast is included but is spartan. Eat at the Vino Ver...

I would stay there again.
I'm not sure why some reviews of the Metropole were so pesimistic. The room we stayed in was really clean, a good size, on-suite bathroom, 2 forms of airconditioning (a really cool celing fan), free room tv, an internet + common area.

The Metropole is far enough from St Julians to be quiet (15 minutes stroll) and near enough to everywhere else.
The service was excellent - especially considering it was the height of the season and the staff really are worked hard. The maids came every day and were pleasant and more importantly: honest :)
Make sure you tell them to close the windows if you are not going to around until night (unless you like cockroaches flying through them! :) (yes Malta does have cockroaches but keep the windows closed in the evening and you'll be ok)
The elevator is really small (max 4 people) but there are 3 of them. The pool is also small but who needs it?
A resonable supermarket is 2 minutes away, a good restaurant (Vino Veritas) is 5 minutes away.
Good inexpensive restaurants:
Vino Veritas - rabbit pasta
Peppi's - swordfish is good.
Cara's - icecream!
* Important * Malta have really great geletarias (icream parlors) but none are as good as the excellent Cara's which is 10 minutes away from the Metropole. Try the meringata or pretty much anything on their menu.
Note: If you are going to Blue Lagoon (and you should) and are using the (cheaper) Alliance Cruises - do not pay for the inclusive lunch. Not only was it very poor but it meant you had to go right back to the ship for lunch - definintely bring a picnic.
The rep Tanya was excellent, very knowledgable and no hard sell of any sort.
Maybe its just cos I'm Irish and easy to please but I would recommend the Metropole and Delta Travel (Ireland) to any first time to Malta types on a budget.

The Metropole certainly wont be one of the worlds leading hotels, however it does provide outstanding value for money, just come back on holiday there costing just over £300 for three weeks with no single suplement with half board for two weeks, thats good value for money. The rooms are on the smallish side, however they are clean and the staff are friendly and effient, cant be faulted. However the hotel has a slightly jaded look, could could be in need of refurbishment, specially the bath towels etc.
The resort is very good, plenty of bars and resurantes, must give a special mention to the City of London at 193 Main Street St Jullians and a very good resturante at 265 Tower Rd Sliema, the name of which cant be mentioned due to copyright laws, but if you come across it you twig straight away, it serves great steaks at very reasonable prices. Only fault with Sliema are the pavements, which your step at night. Overall a good holiday.
