Hotel Bernard, should be called Hotel Bagdad! Did not get any sleep for the entire week we stayed there. The clubs went on all night, impossible to sleep through, then late night revelers had party's in the room next door and finally when there was silence around six in the morning, the building work started, shaking the hotel to its very foundation. A positive aspect of this hotel....Leaving!

My husband and I have just returned from a two-week stay at the Hotel Bernard. The hotel itself can only be classed as average, although the food is good. The staff are in the main very friendly but we were not told that the whole of the second floor is being refurbished which did cause a good deal of early morning noise.

A word of warning - I had two bottles of expensive perfume taken from our room. Although the Manager was sympathetic and we were given a complementary bottle of wine with dinner, it was rather upsetting to think someone (who obviously had access to the room with a key) had gone through our things and taken something which did not belong to them. So beware - lock every single thing up safely as we gathered from regular visitors to the hotel that this was not an uncommon occurrence.

We were disappointed with the resort itself. It does need a good deal of money and time spent on it to upgrade to a reasonable level. Valetta was a delight and on the whole the Maltese are extremely friendly and polite.

We both enjoyed our holiday but if we ever did return to Malta it would not be to St. Julians.

The staff were very friendly, the facalities first class, and location, perfect, (if your young like me!!)It was a bit noisy at night, but hey what do you expect with a hotel located in the heart of Paceville? I've been coming to Malta for over 15 years and I can honestly say this one is the best I've stayed at, and I will most certainly be making a return here soon.

Although you are right in the middle of this lively resort if you want a quiet night close the balcony door and put the air con on and you cant hear anything.A word of warning though be carefull where you eat we had four out of seven meals which were very poor so we tried the hotel and decieded to stick to that the A La Carte was very good. The resort itself is VERY lively but not unpleasent if you want a quiet holl in malta try bugibba!!!.

The hotel Bernard is located in the heart of the bar and club area and for some unfathomable reason is aimed at the elderly market however take a tip from someone who knows the hotel is surmounted by a lot of steps,if you have any mobility issues then forget it,several coulples on our coach had to be relocated because of this yet the brochure never mentions this, strange?.

The food was all right and plenty of it so no complaints on that score, the rooftop pool was of a size familiar with farmers when dipping sheep, the reading room had all the charm of a dentist's waiting room and the reps were obviously based in Brigadoon cus we never saw them.

As I've already mentioned the whole area comes alive at night particually at weekends and if your bedroom is near the famous steps then forget a decent nights sleep as this seemed to be a major shortcut for partygoers.

Malta as a whole can be descibed as ";rocks and churches";,everywhere seemed scrubby and run down if you've ever been to Gateshead you'll get the idea and as for the golden sands of St Georges bay, I don't call a patch of rubbishy dirty sand backed by a dual carriageway ";carribean"; more like ";Tilbury";,the Maltese are very frindly though and there are plenty of good resteraunts/bars around but if your looking for a beach holiday with the kids then try Majorca, however if you like looking round old ruins travelling on overcrowded but cheap buses and sitting on rocks staring out to sea then I heartily recomend Malta, but not Hotel Bernard unless your twenty one years old and in training for the great north run.
