Food in the hotel was the same option each week, and not much of an option if you dont eat meat, breakfast was good though but sometimes tables were not cleard and you had to chase staff for a coffee/tea.eating out food and drink was very expensive. rocky beach was to a very poor standard. dont wear open toe shoes or flipflops.

Hotel Vivaldi: A 4 star in the brochure and it lives up to it.
Very clean. Large rooms, ours (114) had 2 double beds, coffee table and chairs. Maid service / linnen change every day. Nice restaurant with sea views serving good food, regular theme night dinners: Arabian (with belly dancer) Maltese, Italian. Lounge bar with average prices and downstairs Grill bar which when we were there was only open weekends. Too cold for roof garden and pool. Down side was no film channel options on room T.V., the balconies are about 6 inches wide and although patio doors open on to them they are really just for exterior decoration, and the indoor pool/ gym complex was closed Sat. and Sun. Only one side of hotel faces the sea, all others face other buildings. Higher floors may be quieter as we faced 3 clubs: Bootleggers, 7 Rooms and BamBoo wich on Friday and Saturday nights were heaving with very young locals and very loud. Double glazing cut out nearly all noise and we were not really disturbed.
The Vivaldi is in Paceville and we were aware of the reputation of it being the nightlife centre. We would not be too keen on the area in high season but in Feb. it only started bouncing on Friday and Saturday nights. Very very buisy with hordes of young people, although it was not a threatening atmosphere. There are loads of large clubs and music bars, one pole dancing club and a couple of music bars with dancers near the entrance to try and lure in the punters.
The street cleaners were out early cleaning and hosing the roads on following mornings. The area can not be described as the cleanest but pot-holed roads, cracked uneven pavements and derelict buildings are a part of Malta where-ever you are.
The area has nothing to keep you there during the day. A complete absence of shops of any kind. A handful of mini-markets and half a doen tourist type shops and thats it. Plenty of busses to get you around anywhere with fares at 20 cents to Vallette and a longer journey a max of 50 cents. St. Julians its-self is not much better but near by Sliemma ( 10 mins on bus) will fill all shopping requirements and has a nice promenade.
We found the food very good with ample portions the norm. Having seen other reviews on this site we tried a few local resteraunts. We wre dissapointed with Niaomis and would not recommend it. The Avenue was good, as was Paparazzi in Spinola bay.( Great Fillet Steak ) Zeris was wonderful and the chef ( Mark I think) welcomes you personally . La Tosca was good and plenty of others that looked good.
Buffalo Bills and Joey Tomatoes in the Portomaso Marina looked good but twice as expensive as others because of their location. We found 2 of us could eat a good 2 course meal with a bottle of wine for around £30.00 but plenty of cheaper and dearer options available.
Not a lot of choice in bars for our age group. The Tropical Bar is a good meeting point and Jo and Jeff are very helpful with local info. The Scotsman was a good lively night with entertainment. The Sun In Splendour was OK but advertised televised English football but on the night we were watching an advertised game the boss turned over to Itallian football when a bunch of locals came in.
Smokers beware; Malta is now no smoking in all public places so virtually all restaurants and pubs are no-smoking.
In summary we enjoyed Malta. The hotel was good and we would recommend it but if we return we will probably stay in Sliemma and leave Paceville to the younger age groups.
Good hotel in a central location. It was built around 5 years ago and although it's beginning to show some signs of normal wear the standard of public areas and rooms is what you would expect in a UK 4*.

It is not an out and out holiday hotel (there seemed to be a fair percentage of business guests) so is free from the ";forced jollity"; of some resort hotels.
We booked a superior sea view room which was worth the extra as the views to the rear and non-sea side would have been straight onto hotels/pubs/shops. There are very few rooms with useable balconies so please ask if you want one.
Pool is rooftop and not big but as not all guests are holdiaymakers it didn't ever get really busy. Guests seemed to be mostly French/German with Brits definitely in a minority.
The hotel is at the Paceville side of St Julians and this is nightlife central for both holidaymakers and locals. It was incredibly crowded at weekends but there was still a good atmosphere and we didn't see any trouble at all. Although there was an nightclub just accross from the hotel, the double glazing cut out all the noise. The Maltese have just passed a law which outlaws taking glass bottles/glasses outside into the street so there wasn't the usual broken glass littering the streets of a morning.
The Avenue (about 2 streets away from the hotel) is an excellent restraunt - fantastic food at very reasonable cost. Also recommend La Tosca (just around the corner) - fantastic Lampuki and swordfish.

The Vivaldi is truly a wonderful hotel. Its four-star rating does not do it justice. The rooms are new and well kept. The staff is very customer service oriented. Their IT department installed an Internet line into our room for our personal use. The food is tasty and well presented. We have stayed in three different hotels in Malta and the Vivaldi is by far the best value.
