Our stay at the Gillieru Harbour Hotel was brilliant. The staff were all very friendly and extremely helpful. Mary Rose in particular was fantastic, she took great care of us, and I overheard another member of staff offering refreshments to one couple who had a 3am pickup for an early morning flight. He scheduled a suitable time to fit in with them.
If you stay at the Gillieru, try to get one of the rooms with a sea view, it will be worth the extra money. Our room had two balconies, one with a view of the pool which was very refreshing to cool off in and cleaned every day. The other balcony gave us a view of St Paul's bay where people swim in the sea and sunbathe until the sun goes down.
Our room was clean, bright, spacious and it was kept tidy and serviced every day by pleasant staff. Breakfast is continental, but if you want a full English you have to pay extra for it, but when it's so warm, a hot breakfast was the last thing on our minds.
The hotel is close to a number of amenities. Going right out of the hotel along the bay is a Hard Rock Café. Even closer, 200 metres away from the hotel, is a snack place on the sea front that has the best fresh lemonade. On a hot day freshly squeezed ice cold lemonade, and a baguette sandwich was enough. If you walk in the other direction 10 minutes along the bay will take you to Bugibba where boat trips, restaurants, gift shops and jewellery shops line the road and a little further is Bugibba square with a number of good restaurants. Chez Gautane was a particular favourite of ours. The food is tasty, great pizza and pasta and lots of fresh fish.
If you don't feel up to walking that far, there is a Chinese or an Italian restaurant. The hotel has its own restaurant if you don't feel like venturing out, and they specialise in seafood, plus there is a pizzeria, but it is only open on certain nights. It is a poolside bar and snack shop during the day, for cool drinks and ice creams, and a restaurant at night.
One tip, if you are interested in water sports avoid Flo Jo water sports which is located in Qawra at the Dolmen resort. We pre-booked a parasailing trip for our last day and they were utterly useless, unprepared, disorganised and when we questioned their organisation skills, we were accused of being rude and sarcastic. Their customer service is non-existent and they managed to waste half of our last day with pointless delays and general unpleasantness. Avoid.

The hotel is a 3*, but in a fantastic location. The rooms are basic, the lifts very dodgy, but the views are suberb!
I would go back just because the hotel is quiet and the views are superb. As long as you don't expect luxury and attentive staff (they are friendly), be prepared for a wait at the bar (pool and main) because the barman has wandered off somewhere!

First the Gillieru. It is a must for every body. First the location is 1st class a wonderfull outlook. The staff were equally as good, in particular Charles the duty manager. Nothing was to much trouble for him. The food was good, in 2wks we never had a repeated main meal. The Hotel is billed as a 4* but really it is a pretty good 3*.Our bedroom was clean and the linen was changed regular as were the towels but concidering we went in May,at the begining of the year the decore was a little bit ";used"; dirty marks on the wall a little bit of dust here and there dodgy lampshades, only small things but not in a 4* hotel.
Now MALTA.Anybody who has never been before, remember it is a piece of rock in the Medi that has been and is being built on. The Maltese are superb the Buses are not to be missed but the island is a big piece of rock. One big plus is Valleta.Absolutely magnificient.Steeped in history. After 2wks in Malta it did grow on us. There is something about it unlike that other chunk of rock. Gibralta, which really is the pits. Please let the Spanish have it back. I'm sure most people will enjoy Malta I know they will enjoy the Gillieru but we will not be paying a second visit.
