the standard of hygein was appalling and the brochure miss represented what you can expect from the hotel, the food was dreadfull and unappetising, the one night that we stayed was enough to make us move. the receptionist gabrielle was the only good thing about the hotel and could not be criticised. we could never recommend this hotel to anyone.
the resort of st pauls bay is nice and it is easy to get about to see other areas

After getting a package deal off the internet using MALTA BARGAINS they stated that the KARANNE was a FOUR star with a sea view. I paid extra for a balcony/with a sea view. Upon arriving i found the hotel staff were rude and disinterested. The hotel was not a four star standard (would struggle to be a two star) The hotel was not a sea view hotel and we did not get a balcony at all. The Representative from Malta Bargains did not care at all and in fact was as rude as the staff. We ate out every day to get way from the hotel and because the food was very poor at the hotel. We felt like we had been conned into staying at the hotel which was definately not worth the money we had paid to Malta Bargains (not a bargain at all) On a plus side it did not put us off Malta, but please beware of which hotel you are lulled into staying at.
St pauls bay is a lovely resort would recommend the area.

When you arrive in the reception area of the Karanne it looks very impressive and worthy of its 4 stars, however when we checked in the receptionist asked for our holiday vouchers we told her we only had our outbound tickets which she tore off the front page. Unbeknown to us this happened to be our return flight ticket home, which caused a serious hold up in the queue at the airport.
Our room which was cleaned and tidied every day had no view apart from the felt roof of the atrium over the reception and if you get a room at the back of this hotel this is all you will see, if you get a room at the front it will be on the noisy road. it is a bit of a trek into the main resort with hills and steps (not good for the less able bodied) however the views at the top of the hill over St. Pauls Bay are great.
The food at the hotel is nasty, bland and tasteless. We went half board and only had dinner in there once, and could only eat toast for breakfast due to everything being inedible. The first night I was there I had a mouldy bread roll this put me off for the week everyone was complaining about the food. Only stay room only as you can get a good breakfast in the town for around £1.50 and a good variety of dishes for dinner also at reasonable prices. We had lots of students also staying in the hotel which made it a noisy youth club atmosphere especially at weekends they were sat all over the reception drinking and one was even sick in reception that was left there. we went to our room and came down a good 10 minutes later to find it still there.
The Staff at the hotel are pretty friendly overall, it just does not deserve it's 4 stars and certainly would not stay again.
Also be aware of the Time Share pests they are on just about evry street corner a total nuisance.

We found one good restaurant at a hotel in Marfa in the north of the island. Captain Morgans day cruise around the island was like going on a ferry with 400 other tourists. We jumped ship at Comino and got a small boat back to Marfa.

This was a holiday booked at short notice without knowing what to expect. After a two hour delay, we finally arrived at the Karanne Hotel. We were pleasantly surprised by the standard. Although most guests seemed to complain about the minor things, we found most of St.Pauls bay, Qawra and Malta very nice and welcoming. We ate only twice in the hotel because we stumbled across a bar nearby called the Pepperoni bar, the real irish bar. The staff were very helpful, but not just with beers and food relating to their own establishment. The owners,Sharyn and Liam was so helpful with bus times and taxi services to all the best sites Malta had to offer, we decided to eat there as well. The food was home cooked and very tasty and was served quickly and with very little fuss.We spent most of our holiday in this bar and enjoyed every minute. If you go to Malta, stay at the Karane and eat and drink at the Irish bar, its worth it!!
