we have just got back of our holiday, the riu cancun is brill, staff are so friendly and helpfull, food is excellent always piping hot and a lot to choose from at every meal even to the fussier eater like myself, most of the waiters are very good i after to mention one in particular called miguel, always new what we wanted as soon as he saw us,he got our drinks, entertainment team very good always there cheerful and full of life.waiters not so good in the la fiesta where the shows are my husband asked for a rum and coke still waiting 20 minutes later still no drink, another night asked for a rum and coke and got a campari, my niece asked for a strawberry dacquiri and got a margarita, but apart from that you couldnt fault the hotel, my husband and i both had our birthdays, while we were out the maid decorated our room and left a bowl of fruit for us and a picture. the weather was very hot so take plenty of high factor sun cream especially for the children, we didnt have much problem with mosquitos but take plug ins as well as cream , we went to xel-ha which was good value for money it was not very good for the non swimmer as you are limited to what you can do but excellent if you can swim.we have been to cancun before it is our 3rd time we have visited chiten itza which i thought was boring walking round in sweltering sunshine ok if you like history we also have done dolphin discovery which is very good take plenty of money as there are cds dvds to buy as well as photos they are very good and you will want to buy them. we can recommend this hotel if you dont enjoy it there is something wrong as they cater for everybody young and old.

To start at the beginning. We flew out of Doncaster airport with thomson and found the airport to very good no delays and very clean and new.Thomson have now installed their new seats with more legroom and seatback tv's a lot better than last year. On arrival at cancun airport the queue's to passport control were massive it took at least an hour, and after an 11 hour flight it was all we needed.even when on the coach to the resort we had another hour wait for other Thomsom passengers who got stuck. The transfer is fairly quick and once at the hotel everthing got better. For check in they took us to a conference room near the sportsbar and gave us a drink to cool us down which we all needed.Check in was quick and once we got to our room we were well pleased the view was great.the aircon worked well and the room was clean and tidy, it had a minibar and optics filled with spirits. It had 4 restaurants the main buffet which was very good plenty of choice and good quality. The mission which we sometimes used for lunch was also good. 2 speciality reataurants a brazialian whic was ok if you like meat and a japanese which we never got to. It has 4 pools all good quality and well designed although the one with the swimup bar got crowded and looked murky so we avoided it. the beach and sea are fantastic sea really blue and warm GREAT! The entertainment is ok typical holiday fare, the drinks are good as is the service of all at the hotel. we took 2 trips Chichen itza which is a long day and very warm, and the pirates trip on a night which is a good laugh. The hotel is in a good position near Coco bonga's the hard rock cafe etc for nighlife if you want to get out and about. Well I better finish the holiday was great the hotel very good and I would have no hesitation to recommend this to anyone, and will go back sometime in the future myself.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:

when you read things that others say about hotels, etc. you sometimes worry that not every thing is going to be wonderful.......let me put your mind at ease,

this hotel is by far the best place i have ever stayed, the food was superb, the staff were so helpful, it sometimes made me uncomfortable, due to not being used to pampering. the rooms were spacious with plenty of room to hang clothes, or put away into drawers.
it has been said in previous comments that there was a dampness about the place, but i can assure you that this accommodation prides itself on cleanliness and a staff that continue to uphold the high standards it advertizes.

1 SMALL PROBLEM

i,and my family can tolerate almost anything, but when it comes down to rude arrogant young americans , who treat this beautiful place as a 1 star garden shed hotel, then it had to be time to stand up and say something.
the reps. are powerless, as thomson/ portland are only secondary guests, due to the hotel catering mainly to americans, ( they are the ones who fill the rooms year on year)

you must understand that these children are 18 /19 years old and in america the legal drinking age is 21......so you can imagine the yobish behaviour.

DONT LET THIS PUT YOU OFF GOING , AS RESORT TICKS ALL THE RIGHT BOXES AND MORE

We heard the Riu Cancun was a good hotel, food etc but we did not expect it to be excellent. When we first arrived the weather was not that great, very warm and really cloudy, but when we arrived at the hotel everything was well organised,we were sat down and gived a cocktail. The rooms were not amazing, but clean and ours had loads of space and a sea view so we were happy. The food in this hotel has such a wide variety, you can never get bored, the japanese restaurant is top class and the service is so good make sure yyou bring some money to tip the lovely waitors. The pool area has different sections to it,you can have a boozy day by the swim up pool or a nice quiet relaxing day at the quieter parts. The beach is amazing whatever part you sit or swim on just be careful as there are rocks in the sea that you cant see. Defo go out to Coco Bongos if you can, great entertainmetn but the other clubs in Cancun are not that great, they are all inclusive drinking nights with plastic cups and no dance floor, kinda weird but the hotel is great every night and even the club on site, Pacha was a laugh.

All in all we had a great time, good for all ages and the weather in mexico is amazing but v.hot so bring extra sun cream.

We flew out to Gatwick which wasnt too bad, the flight went fairly quick, but checking in at Gatwick took ages, where Mexico airport was so simple apart from the forms you have to fill out for imigration.

On arrival to the hotel we were amazed at the scale and splendour of the hotel, and had a refreshing cocktail on arrival, then straight to our room where a stocked fridge awaits you while the porter brings your bags to the room. The views are amazing and location spot on if you are here for the nightlife. The food here we thought may get boring by the second week, but we enjoyed everything on offer and there are plenty of choices, too much sometimes. The pools are lovely, but it is true what people say about the Americans being loud here, they stay in the pool bar all day long and then you do witness the odd one having to be carried to there room, not a very good message for a platinum hotel we thought, but they were harmless.

I recomend a night to Coco Bongos, we were blown away with it, and the Captain Hook Boat Trip was fun for all ages.I was a little disapointed the resort of Cancun has nothing to offer for families (its like a mini San Antonio), but luckily my daughter found plenty to do in the hotel itself.
Wouldnt recommend a wedding here either as the venue is located about 10m from the noisy pool bar!

All in all would definatly go back, mainly due to the great service we received from the hotel.
