We have just returned from the White Sands resort and I do not recognise where we have been from the other reviews. The complex was well maintained, the food variety and quality was good, the facilities were what you would expect for a family resort and the...

the island is nice if you take a car and see the best bits, the main town is full of the usual tourist shops, which we found to be expensive, geared up for the american cruise liners that stop here everyday, the hassling is quite intense, worse than turkey, theres some lovely scenery and the beaches are gorgeous, theres a good selection of restaurants along the main strip, loved all the ceramics that they sell. but wouldnt rush back to mexico
ive never complained about a holiday before but this is the worst hotel ive ever come accross, its dirty, unfinished, the staff are unfriendly and miserable, we had ants in our bed and gekhos in our room, food is awful, beach is dirty, the pools has blue pa...

The Occidental Grand is in a nice location, around 30 minutes drive from the city of San Miguel. Its a very quiet area, not as many cruise liner passengers make it that far south, so its not as busy as around San Miguel. The hotel is right next to the beach, and is surrounded on both sides by a small area of jungle until you reach either the Iberostar resort or the Holiday village. The beach itself is not very wide, but is pleasant enough, has a nice pier and you can have a nice leisurely walk up and down it. The sea the first week we were there was crystal clear, and very calm. You could see hundreds of fish around you, and feed them with bananas, etc. The second week the sea became cloudy, and there was a slight swell, but nothing compared with Playacar where we holidayed in 2006. There is a scuba dive shop on site called Dive Palancar, and we took a couple of great boat dives whilst there. Karen, one of the instructors is great, and we would highly recommend her services. They also operate snorkelling trips, and you can hire kayaks, Hobie dinghy's, etc there for no charge. As we have said previously the nighttime entertainment is OK, things like traditional Mexican dancers, a Craft fair, and typical party games. The first week we were there it was mostly Canadians who were there, and they love to party!! Great people, and not a hint of trouble. The bars around the hotel are OK, but could be bigger, there always seemed to be a queue around them, especially the poolside one. Nighttime seemed to end around 10ish when the main entertainment ended. You can always get a taxi into San Miguel, costs around $15.00 each way, and there are a lot of restaurants and bars in that area. We did a couple of excursions, but these were on the mainland, not on Cozumel itself. One word of warning about the hotel itself, the hotel rooms are in small buildings (3 stories high), and each one has a concierge. They will try to persuade you to attend a meeting for their Royal Club, and will use various enticements for you to do so. It is a timeshare operation run by Occidental. We would only attend the meeting on holiday if it rained during our stay. You have to agree to stay in the meeting for a minimum of 90 minutes, after that you can leave with no obligation and get your goodies (car rental, snorkelling trips, etc). It stayed dry our whole 2 weeks so we didn't bother doing it.
We would definitely return to the Occidental Grand, but it is very quiet, so not for all.
We booked this holiday through First Choice. Holiday was from 3-17 May 2008. Hotel rooms are quite large, we had 2 king size beds, patio, TV (lousy reception though compared with the mainland), minibar fridge (Pacifica beer, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Fanta, and...
