.after reading a few not so good reviews, we were a bit worried about what the hotel would be like, however we found the hotel, staff, and food all excellent. the only negative was the weather, but you can't do much about that, except make full use of the bar service.Even the nightly entertainment was good, we usually don't bother but it was worth watching. we had no problem getting sunbeds, maybe something to do with the lack of sun!although you can still get a tan through the clouds so put some cream on. with regards to the lack of beach, we found it a lot better than most of the surrounding hotels, who had a lovely view of the dead whales? you'll know what i mean when you see them. it was my birthday while staying at the hotel, and was presented with a bottle of tequilla, and cards from the staff, which was a nice touch overall a great hotel would recommend it to all

Just returned from Riu Yucatan June 2008. Took 2 week break. Quite worried about weather looking at the forecast for June but needn't have worried - it was scorching apart from 1 day cloudy and 1 morning rain and thunder. Hotel very good but not 5* in my estimation, more like 4*. Very happy and helpful staff. Tip the maid and you'll get your towels made into little animals. DO TAKE GOOD INSECT REPELLENT! People with terrible bites. We took proper repellent from outdoor/hiking shop and it worked a treat. Its a must. Sunbeds taken very early but plenty room on the beach and we found the beach much cooler and more comfortable to sunbathe. Few shops close by and Playa del carmen 5 dollas in a taxi.We went to Dolphin Discovery (we were told it was better than the other dolphin places) in a taxi and paid 149 dollas each for the full programme which is the foot push, swim with them, dorsal ride, games, kiss and hug etc, To go with Thomson reps it was 249 dollas. Although the cost of the taxi was 16 dollas there and 16 dollas back we still saved a huge amount. An experience not to be missed. If I was to go again I would definately pay the extra money and go stay at the Riu Palace next door. The difference in the meals apparently is well worth it as our meals were ok but by the end of the two weeks they all tasted the same. Go and enjoy the beautiful picture postcard scenery. A very long way for a lovely resort and an acceptable hotel. Nothing really to complain about its just it had no wow factor.

OverallGood Resort

Playacar quiet and safe, the taxi drivers are very nice. Price your trip before you get in. But they all seemed genuine and happy to be of help.

First of all book with Portland. At least £100 pp cheaper. Hotel was amazing. You could walk from the pools to the beach in seconds. Rooms were cleaned spotless everyday, also the rooms are spacious. There are 3 floors to each block. We were in block closest to the pool area (4206) The food was amazing and catered for the fussy eaters to the adventurous eaters. Everything you wanted was there to eat.We found no queues to book for the Asian (chinese really) and Mexican (this was are only poor meal of the holiday) We got down to the beach for 09:30 and had the pick of the beds. We found it better on the beach due to the sea breeze. When we wanted a drink we would just walk up to the pool bars in seconds.Beach and sea were amazing, white sand and the sea was different shades of blue. There was entertainment during the day which was good fun. The entertainment of an evening was ok,the majority of the shows were good. We would go over to the Tequila Hotel5 min walk to go to the Sports Bar or the Disco better 4 the teenagers in our group. The beer was served in plastic cups, you could have any cocktail you wanted. The town centre was 5dollars in a taxi. The trip to XEL HA is a must. We even had Hurricane dean and still had an amazing holiday. The staff cannot do enough for you. RIU YUCATAN IS WORTH THE MONEY
