Playacar is a purpose built tourist resort. Safe at night to stroll upto the local shops selling sombreros and tequilla! Locals really nice and helpful. Hotel immaculately clean throughout. Rooms good size with cartoon network for kids! Mini bar refilled everyday with a couple of cans of coke and water. Maids excellent - rooms kept spotless and towels replaced everyday - the elephant towel was fantastic! Buffet restaurant great - plenty of choice even for kids. At lunch lots of salads, paninis, pizza etc and cakes, sorbets everyday. Evening buffets also good - roast meats, fish, traditional mexican. Breakfast excellent even though the same everyday theres so much choice. Taxix into playa carmen only a few dollars. Xel-ha a must; Tulum very very hot. Kids ready to go back - loved being able to go back to room on their own and help themself to food whenever.
Great holiday, would go back tomorrow!! :*)

Where do we start, this resort in our opinion was fantastic. The accommodation was clean, there was a good choice of food every day. The staff were friendly with always a smile and a hello. The beach was beautiful, white sand and clear blue water. The swimming pool was only 20 yds. from the beach, which was great for keeping an eye on the kid's!
There are plenty of sun beds on the beach with plenty of shade if required. The pool bar is well stocked especially if you like cocktails, we highly recommend the Pina Coladas!!. The heart of the hotel was the courtyard/resturant/bar area with plenty of entertainment. The evening shows were excellent, a lot of hard work goes into producing them. The restaurant could do with air/con. as it does get quite hot at night, but there are two other resturants with air/con. which are the Chinese and Italian, both are worth a visit.
We did a couple of trips, one was to Xel-Ha which is a natural lagoon where you can snorkel, swim or float down a lazy river on an inflatable ring (very relaxing) also you can swim with the dolphins or just laze around. Another trip was Captain Hooks Pirate Ship situated in Cancun (about 50 mins) where you go out in one of two 3 mast ships into Cancun harbour where you are treated to swashbuckling entertainment, dancing, singing and a fantastic meal, then you are treated to a mock battle between the two ships, a brilliant family night out.
Finally the weather, it is typically Carribean, very hot. We had two thunder storms at night out to sea, we sat on the beach watching them which was a fantastic experience, but its not like Britain, they go as quick as they come. Overall we had a fantastic holiday and will definately go back.
In our opinion this resort is well worth a visit.

We went to Viva Azteca to celebrate my 40th birthday, what a fantastic holiday.
The reception staff were very helpful and your luggage was taken to your room. The room was basic, but very clean. The balcony was very small, could not put a chair on it. Two queen size beds, plus I requested another bed for my daughter, it fitted in the room fine. Fridge was filled with soft drinks everyday, towels changed on request, bedding changed daily. Lovely towel designs everyday eg: swans, roses, boats all made out of towels. Really good. You do not need to take beach towels as they are provided free.
Food was excellent, in all 3 restaurants. You do need to book the Oriental and Italian restaurants but the main one is buffet style. Different theme nights every night. Pool bar same food every day, but nice. Entertainment is in a theater style club, you have to take drinks up to theater to see a show which is on every night. Kids enjoyed it though!
Weather was excellent apart from 3 days of a tropical rain storm, which flooded a few of the ground floor apartments. Not much to do when it does rain. The facilities on the beach and the day time staff were excellent, salsa dance lessons by pool.
We did three trips, Xel-ha(a natural lagoon) which included lunch, snorkling, swiming, lazy river on tyres, very relaxing, alot of queuing though it was worth the wait, this trip was in two parts a trip to Tulum which was Mayan ruins, very hot and not worth the visit. The other trip we did was Dolphin discovery, there are alot of Dolphin trips but this was the best as the group was very small and it was a brillant experience for everyone especially me as it was my birthday present(dream come true) The only other trip we did was the Jungle speed boat cruise, driving a speed boat from a lagoon into the caribean sea onto the coral reef then we could stop to jump into the sea to snorkle with beautful fish. Very expensive, if you book with your reps, go into the town and book with any of the ticket stalls.
Overall, a holiday of a life time, excellent value for money, would go back tommorrow.

We have just returned from a two week holiday in the Viva Azteca and can highly recommend it to others thinking of travelling to Mexico.
The hotel is kept clean and tidy, and our room was always kept very clean even though we had our two year old daughter in the room with us spilling milkshake on the floor every day. We had two queen size beds in our room but there was still plenty of space, however the balconies are very small. There is a hairdryer and mini fridge in the room which is re-stocked daily and also satellite TV. We were on the second floor and beware people with buggies, there is no lift!!! No need to worry about your cases though as bell boys carry them all up and down the stairs for you.
As with most pools when you are abroad, you have to be up early to get a sunbed as people reserve them with towels but the hotel is on the beach where you can normally always find beds. The pool is the same depth all the way around (about 4 1/2 foot) so it is still great for people who cannot swim well. There is a separate baby pool and jacuzzi too.
The pool bar is run by some excellent waiters, and if you give them a tip they will bring drinks to your sunbeds while other people have to queue up!!
The main restaurant El Nopal is very large but is not air conditioned which made us feel hot and uncomfortable after sitting in there for so long and the hotel should really consider having air conditioning put in. The food was very repetative and contained a lot of meat and fish dishes. Beware, there is no separate children's menu and i sometimes found it hard to find my 2 year old something to eat. The waiters in this restaurant are also very friendly and helpful. Also people with children who like blackcurrant - they do not have this drink there so take some with you!!
The italian restaurant is fantastic, the food was excellent and we would highly recommend it to all.
The entertainment team are great, there are a variety of different activities to do every day and they also put on a show every evening in the hotel's theatre. We did watch Beauty and the Beast which was brilliant for all the family.
We did have a couple of days of rain and when this happened there isn't really much to do. There is no games room so we ended up in our room playing cards!! There is an internet room with two computers so you can go on line. There is a gym with a huge jacuzzi if you feel like a work out, a hair salon and a gift shop.
We can also recommend the Speedboat Jungle Tour and Xcaret as excursions as these were brilliant.
If you do go to the town of 5th Avenue be prepared for people hasseling you to buy things, just say no firmly and they leave you alone.
There will be people at the Azteca offering you a tour of the hotel and the sister hotel the Viva Maya. They claim to just make you welcome but they are just basically selling timeshares. If you see people with Vacation Club on their tops just say no!! They try to get you to buy a room at the Viva Maya, the whole thing is a sales pitch!!
We visited the sister hotel The Viva Maya which is still very nice but in my opinion not as nice as the Azteca. Phone calls back to the UK can be expensive so try to make calls quick!!!
The airport in Cancun is a nightmare so be warned!! They check all suitcases and hand luggage by hand so it takes ages - we were queuing for over an hour to check in! We also had to pay a departure tax of $43 a person so make sure you save some money for this - they only take cash.
Overall we had a great holiday the weather was brilliant on the whole, all the staff were very friendly and helpful and we would recommend this hotel to all.
