"Great little retro motel"
Overall Hotel Rating:
The Waipu Clansman Motel takes its name from the strong association the small town of Waipu has with the country of Scotland. It's on the outskirts a smallish seaside resort near lovely sandy beaches about an hour and a half north of Auckland in New Zealand. The area is also popular for tourists because there are colonies of 'glow-worms' - actually cave-dwelling midge larvae - nearby.
The motel itself is well-run by friendly hosts and is clean. There are various types of room - most with there own bathroom facilities, but not absolutely all have this, so you should check. The room we stayed in had two double beds and a basic but functional kitchen-ette. The rooms face directly onto the car-park but there is a small area outside the back door where you sit outside - cheek-by-jowl with your neighbours, admittedly, but the outdoor area backs onto pleasant farmalnd, which is nice. You aslo have a distant view of 'real Kiwi' houses and country back-gardens across the field, which is good for a nosey about!
The decoration in the rooms is a little dated - a bit of a 1980s timewarp is going on as regards style in the bedrooms or at least it is in the one we stayed in- but it's all still in very good condition, as I said clean, and perfectly serviceable. The kitchen-ette stoves and units in general are also something from times past (a bit like what your granny might have had when you were a kid in the 1970s); I don't mean any disrespect when I say that, it's all perfectly functional and spotlessly clean and while it's maybe a bit surprising this stuff has all lasted so incredibly well it's also interesting to see.
We stayed for one night in the Clansman when having trouble with the campervan we were supposed to be residing in during our road-trip in New Zealand, so I mayn't have been in the best frame of mind during our visit. But the friendliness of the host and the all-round, unpretentions niceness of the motel and its farmland setting did a lot to improve my mood. With the self-contained, self-catering units, it's clearly geared up for people visiting for a longer stay and I'd be really happy to visit again for a longer stay. It's definitely recommended.
