A great city and resort. You can walk for miles and keep very fit.
I prefer the old town over the hotel zone.
Not of you want a beach holiday, but love it!

Nice enough resort with a few decent bars and shops, we wanted a bit of sun and got it though it wasn't particularly warm. I am oldish but don't really feel the cold normally. You certainly wouldn't want to swim in it!

Funchal review
"Old fashioned, great atmosphere"
resort to a friend
We stayed at the Raga, which is very accessible to Funchal. This is a fantastic place, the people are extremely friendly and polite should you need to ask them for directions. Most people in Funchal do speak English, well younger Maderians atleast. We took several walks along the marina after dinning on the fantastic local restaurants. This is a very picturesque place specially at night with the lights from Funchal caressing the Atlantic Ocean. Just amazing.

November 2009 holiday for one week. Weather was very warm and sun was out.
Town is built on hills and this was very evident wherever you walked.
Appears to be a good bus system but we only used the number 24.

Funchal is a lovel resort,very relaxed,lots to see & lots of excursions to do. It's lovely to walk along the promenade,especially in the evenings. We were there at the end of November,just as the Xmas lights were turned on,marvellous!

Pretty place, the old streets and buildings are very beautiful. We visited the Funchal fish market after eating the famous "peixe espada" so we wanted to see it in whole. My, who knew such an ugly fish could be so tasty. The is a very good selection of places to eat in Funchal and there's lots to explore all around Madeira.

Nice town, we particularly like the old part. Some nice bars around there. We didn't particularly like the main drag, but the beach is lovely, proper Atlantic coastline.

Albufeira review
"Realy nice, clean and cheap"

It was our first time in Albufeira and we were impressed with the area, people and the local food. The prices were cheap and people were kind and very calm.

Lovely bit of coast. We often go in April and October as its not very hot but normally sunny. It was a bit windy though!

Really lovely city to walk around. You must visit some of the Port wine lodges. A river trip is a must as well. There are some really fascinating old sights in the city.
