"Montechoro Beach Club review"
Overall Hotel Rating:
The Montechoro Beach Club at Praia da Oura is situated halfway down the very steep hill on the right hand side as you go down to the beach.
We were very impressed by the apartments, which were spotlessly clean, the kitchen facilities were fantastic with everything you needed, not that we used them very much. Plenty of sunbeds to go round providing you were down to the pool area by about 10.00, otherwise you had to settle for a bed in a shaded area. When you arrive ask at reception for the ";Top Floor Pass"; this allows you to go up to the 6th floor and gain access to the door which takes you to all the ammenities of Montechoro(inc The Strip)cutting out walking up the hill.
The beach can be reached by going down a flight of stairs just to the left of the pool area, this is beautiful but be prepared to pay 15 Euros for 2 sunbeds and a parasol. We stayed for 2 weeks but have to admit after the first week we were fed up of the strip, too repetitive and crowded for our liking, ended up going to the Old town of Albufeira at least 3 or 4 nights which we much preffered, less than 5 Euros by taxi. The best restaurants we visited were Tasco de Vegas and The Atrium, at Albufeira, and Geordie Pride, Senor Frogs and The Rovers Return at Montechoro. In the second week hired a car which was very reasonably priced at 90 Euros for 3 days, ask at reception for details, another place I would recommend especially if you have kids is the slide and spalsh water park, which can be booked in most of the travel shops in Montechoro, a coach picks you up from the hotel to go there.
All in all a very enjoyable holiday and a fantastic hotel/appartments.

Overall Hotel Rating:
Hotel was old and dated, looked great from the out side!
would only say its a 2 star.
Could not get a sun bed around the pool all week the hotel do not manage people who leave there towels!! The other pool next to apartments was ok (when adults were not fighting)Food on strip was very run of the mill totaly man made resort. Sizzing stone at end of strip is worth a visit.
Old town had more to offer 5E taxi away. Dont hold out for the hotel bus it was always full and they dont run extra services and it stops after 5 pm.
Reception staff not polite in helping with me with any thing I needed. Was only aloud 7 minutes to shower in the curtasy room on check out day! with a 6 year old its not easy.Would not go agian.

hotel
just arrived back from the hotel montochoro in Portugal this hotel is suppose to be a 4* bandb if this is 4* then there must be some right dumps in Portugal the hotel is very big but very dated had to wait 45 mins to check in due to only 1 person on checking in even though there were 3 other people on reception cost 4 euros a day for the fridge I recommend get one because of the price on the drinks in the hotel are very expensive 5.50 euros for a very very small baileys the breakfast was a standing joke and a lottery to see what you were going to get day 1 bacon no eggs or sausage day 2 sausage no bacon or eggs day 3 eggs no bacon or sausage it was a total joke on the 5th day we were taking bets on what it was going to be the wife had some toast sent to the room and this cost 4 euro for 2 slices of dry bread not even toasted
the strip
the meals cost on the first night 27 euro then on Wednesday England played football and the same meal went up to 38.50 euro MMMM this was without drinks the place to me was one big RIP OFF after another and the food is not that good
the sports shops , the tobacconists , are all owned by the same people so they can charge what they want and do
if the montochoro is a 4* then the torviscos playa in Tenerife is a 6* hotel
this was the first time to Portugal and the very last Blackpool with sun is all that I can describe this place

Overall Hotel Rating:
Stayed in the Hotel Montechoro in early August, and generally the place is very good. The rooms are spacious and well maintained, the cleaning service is excellent, the staff were very friendly and helpful, and the pools were good. The quieter pool further away from the main hotel is excellent, and I would recommend you find this one. The one problem I did have with the hotel was the breakfasts. They were, frankly, vile. The fry-up stuff was generally lukewarm and taste-free, and the cereals tasted as if they'd been left out in the sun for a few hours. For a four-star hotel you really should get better than this. A few people on here have mentioned that the air-conditioning is poor, but we found it to be very effective.
Albufeira is excellent. The Strip is what you'd expect, but nothing like as loud and tacky as you'll get in places like Benidorm or the livlier Greek islands. There are also many good restaurants along the Strip, particularly the ones at the top end near the hotel. Erin's Isle is also good for food (we ended up going here for our breakfasts rather than take advantage of the free ones at the hotel). I would avoid the Ancona restaurant though. Waiting over and hour for food burnt to a crisp isn't really my idea of a good night out. There are many decent bars catering for all tastes. We liked the Cafe Del Mar and Wild.
The old town is a must. The taxis can be a nightmare at weekends (try getting that little train thing, much easier) but it is worth it. Very picturesque and you seemingly can't get a bad meal there. The Rock Cafe is a great place to see live bands and the staff there are very friendly. You can spend hours walking around the cobbled back streets and not get bored.
We had a day out at Splash and Slide, and found it to be one of the worst waterparks we've been to. I don't know what the others inthe area are like, and you expect these places to be busy in August, but SandS was way too overcrowded. Any slide took at least 45 mins of queueing to get on, and the food at the snack bar was so bad it was comical. If I could give any bit of advice on going to this place it would just be to get a pizza or salad, rather than pay over the odds for tepid roast chicken and cold chips covered in sellaphane. Having been to many waterparks in the Med in mid-August I was very disappointed with Splash and Slide.
All in all though, whatever your age, if you're going to Albufeira and staying at the Hotel Montechoro you can't go far wrong. The resort has something for everyone, and the hotel is very good without being spectacular.

Overall Hotel Rating:
Drinks in Blue Bar very expensive ......Bacardi and Coke £4.10 ouch
Rooms, dull, clean, in need of refurbishment...hanging rail fell out of wall in wardrobe
Staff..friendly enough but disorganised and poorly managed....ended up clearing our own tables at dinner, breakfast etc
Pool and sun loungers farcical, get up in the middle of the night to be sure to reserve or lie on the grass
Food...poor choice, not very tasty, bacon and sausage at breakfast horrible, meat at dinner dry. NO ICE CREAM FOR KIDS !!!!
This hotel is at best 3 star, I can see that 20 years ago it was probably an excellent 4* location but not now .....be wary. We stayed at a Barcelo 4* in Tenerife at Easter and this place is not even close in terms of comfort, food and service.
On the positive side it was clean....now I'm struggling......
Very disappointing.
Would never go back.

Overall Hotel Rating:
Before I booked this accommodation I had read previous reviews of this hotel and was expecting what we got.
The reception area looks rather grand and is nice and cool, recep staff very helful. The hotel is positoned very well at the top of 'The Strip'away from the noisier bars, rooms are huge, although they need decorating and updating a good point was that it was very clean and plenty of space for clothes etc. Maid service every day and the staff were extremely helpful, porters available on arrival to help with cases etc.
Thought the pool was rather small for size of hotel and did not look that inviting rather worrying did not see it being cleaned at all in time we were there, perhaps it was done at midnight! The usual scramble for sunbeds in the morning, went down around 8 0'clock most days to ensure we got one. There were mostly Irish holidaymakers during our stay and not many other nationalities. Entertainment team worked hard to get people up and taking part in something, I thought they good for very young children but a bit lacking for teenagers, although there was table tennis and an organised activity in the morning and afternoon for anyone to take part in, usually water polo or darts/snooker competition. They do have own tennis courts and gym. We were on Bandb board which was OK, usual stuff for breakfast although a few times we did not bother it was so hectic and feltt more like a school canteen. Advice, take a travle kettle so you can brew up your own and have it in peace on your balconmy. Best rrom were on the higher floors overlooking the swimming pool, do request if you can.
'The Strip' was usual mix of English type bars and resturuants, with people trying to get you in when you walked past, you could of been in any country, it was very commercialised and lacked any kind of character, although if you like drinking you are absolutely spoilt for choice and it is the best place to be! A couple of good place we ate were Senor Frogs and Da Silvas. This road goes all the way down to Praire de Oura beach and takes about 15 minutes walk (downhill) a bit of a trek if you have little ones, although there is a free bus from the hotel which we had no trouble getting on. The beach has watersports and parasols/sunbeds available and a selection of bars/cafe's. It was quite busy when we were there and seemed to be a mix of holiday makers and Portugese.
We got a taxis (5 euros whereever you go) to the 'Old Town' in the evenings which was totally different atmosphere froom the strip, the main square had street entertainment every evening and the streets that lead of this are packed with places to eat. One superb meal we had was at 'The Atrium' which also had entertainment (Portugese)this is on the left just before the tunnel to the beach and I highly reccommend it! As we never hired a car I don't think that this resort reflected the true Portugal, I would recommend you do as the hotel and surrounding area copuld get boring if you stay for two weeks. I thought eating out was fairly expensive compared to Spain/Canaries. Would I reccommend this hotel, yes, expect 3* not 4*, would I reccommend the resort No it is too commercialised though great if you are into drinking and clubbing.
I would go to Portugal again and try a different resort..

Overall Hotel Rating:
The Montechoro Hotel is a four star rated hotel in an excellent location. It is at the top of the strip away from all the noise and bustle.
The hotel is clean and very well run. Some reviews think it does not deserve its 4 star but i disagree. The rooms are large, the airconditioning is spot on, the bathrooms are large and clean and the rooms are cleaned daily and linen and towels changed everyday. The shower is really powerful but please bear in mind that there is a water shortage so do not indulge. The decor is white everywhere which probably makes people think it is dated. But it is all fresh and clean and the portuguese see to love white.
The breakfast is the low point.A large spread but not very imaginative and no local flair. The dinner menu is good and varied and very nice with local dishes too. The pool is busy and does the job very well.
The entertainment team are great, unobtrusive, likeable and young and lay out a lot of activities for the grown ups and the children as well (late into the night) but no pressure to participate. Use the bus to go to the old town (its free) and you will go back many times. The best place to eat is where the locals do and the Oliviera (right side, 2nd road top of the square) is fantastic. 50 c for a coffee and the sardines are brilled to perfection. The hotel has a supermarket bang opposite (opposite the Erins Isle bar). As for the irish pub, if you fancy a sports bar with little character and exorbitant prices and want to feel like you have not left your home town then its the place for you. There is much more to life than a local footie match.
The hotel in a nutshell is great and so is the country.

Overall Hotel Rating:
The hotel looks large and impressive on arrival, with an imposing lobby area. It is situated at the top of a hill (known locally as 'Cardiac Hill'!)which leads down to the beach areas. The reception staff at the hotel often gave the impression that they had better things to do than customer service, however, many of the staff were helpful. The decor of the lobby area is not reflected throughout the remainder of the hotel, with much of it looking tired and in need of replacement. Having said that, the rooms are very spacious and well-equipped, but perhaps the current rating of 4* is on the high side.
We stayed BandB which was a great decision. Breakfast is served until 10am and there is plenty of choice, although the plates are tiny! We tended to get cold drinks throughout the day from the bar serving the pool area, and then ate out at night. Eating out was generally a lovely experience, a particular highlight was a genuine Portuguese restaurant just off the strip next to a shoe shop. The Portuguese steak was amazing, and the food was lovingly and freshly prepared.
The hotel runs a free shuttle bus to the beach (otherwise a 20 minute walk) and to the old town (a 5 minute taxi ride), which is excellent.
The entertainment team at the hotel were great fun, and organised water polo or similar for all everyday at the pool, which is not cold at all. There were other activities for adults and kids at 3pm such as boules, table tennis and pool. Children were well catered for generally, with games and fun nights all the time. In the evenings the bar hosted karaoke, bingo and live music, which was quite poorly attended given the size of the hotel. Most of the guests seemed to be in the Irish bar Erin's Isle opposite. It is great fun, with excellent live music and the largest karaoke song list ever!
There is plenty to do in and around the hotel, whether you decide to venture further or not. Although Albufeira has a reputation for tackiness, the area immediately close to the hotel is not too bad at all. The beach end of the strip is worse though, quite 'Brits abroad'. The old town is better, although it too has its fair share of neon and blaring sound systems. More sedate holiday-makers would probably prefer the resort of Villamoura, which is altogether more classy.
Our rep didn't tell us that we could hire fridges, and I didn't know that there was another pool nearby until I read other reviews on this site! It is still the case that loungers were nabbed by 8am, however on our last day a whole new load of loungers arrived which may alleviate the situation.
Tennis and the gym are on site but are not free, they cost about 5 euros or 9 euros to hire equipment, but the facilities are pretty good.
Although there are negative points about the hotel and the area, I am left with a positive memory of the holiday, and would recommend it to others. I would definitely go back if the hotel had a make-over!

Overall Hotel Rating:
We booked the hotel Montechoro as a last minute deal.
When we arrived at the airport things went very smoothly and we were soon on the air conditioned coach and off to our hotel. The temp was very hot and we were concerned that our two year old daughter would suffer the effects of heat. When we arrived at the hotel my first impression was perhaps it was a four star hotel which needed a coat of paint and an update. The service was excellent with the staff taking care of our bags at reception. We paid for a fridge which was a godsend as it kept drinks and aftersun nice and cold.
The rooms were large and we stayed on the top floor which had a good view. The rooms were cleaned daily and clean towels supplied. The shower was very powerfull and we always had hot water. We stayed half board and found the hotels food was basic but more than edible. It appeared most people were only bed and breakfast and as such the evening meal wasn't what i would expect from a 4* hotel.
The pool got very busy and we found if you didn't place a towel on a sunbed for 8am you wouldn't get a place. There are signs which clearly state this is not allowed however everyone ignored this.We found on the second to last day that the hotel has a second pool across the road which was immaculate and quiet. It had a kiddies pool and an adult size pool (shame we didn't know on the first day).
There are lots of bars and restuarants along the 'strip' which starts outside the hotel. The cobbly streets which extend the strip is hard going pushing a pushchair but once you adjust to the slow pace it was fine. The hotel has an extensive bar area which we used each evening. The service was second to none with the staff taking orders from you so you didn't have to use the bar.
It was the first time we have been to the Algarve and all in all we were very happy with the Montochoro hotel. I would go back again for 2weeks instead of the 1 week. I would like to see the owners refurbish the hotel as its location makes it worthy of investment..

Overall Hotel Rating:
First impression was how big it looks, beautiful hotel. Hotel in excellent location at the top of strip. Facilities in Hotel were realy good, food was good too. Beach is about 15 mins walk can use hotel bus we prefered the walk, these beaches are second to none there for two weeks spent every day down there. Rooms were huge and clened to a real high standard every day. Nightlife was good altough strip can be a bit too much, the bar outside the hotel Erins Isle was brilliant. There was a non stop party atmosphere about this place especially after Celtic had played, great nights spent in there always live music wether a musician or the punters. This is a must.
Staff here ver helpful. The Old Town is a must restraunts realy good. Entertainment good, the Rock Cafe have a realy good local band.
Overall this was a great holiday and would definately come back to this resort and hotel, thanks to Kwick Travel 10/10.PS For a Sunday dinner Legend right out side hotel is realy good, happy hours are great value good place to start the night.
