A lovely hotel for families and couples. Food - plenty to choose from and very tasty.Bar and restaurant staff were friendly, helpful and efficient.Mario was great. Rooms - a little dated(but we had read previous reviews regarding this)but were cleaned daily and towels replaced daily. Very spacious, even with a double and single bed there was ample room and plenty of storage. the bathroom was spacious also with two basins. We were at the front which was close to Erins Isle pub. This could be a noisy pub till the early hours sometimes!!( A good drinking hole though) Pool - always able to get a sunbed at any time of day. The sun stays on the whole terrace for most of the day. The pool was very cold when we were there (may). Bar and restaurant - clean with good choice of snacks at the pool bar. pleasant staff. Downside - the bar and grill on the 10th floor were closed. A great shame as we took a peek and they looked gorgeous and we were told (by regular guests)that the grill had been excellent. Must see - views from the 10th floor terrace. Beautiful!!!

Excellent holiday, first time to portugal and I would definately go back to the same place, hotel recommended due to its location and it was perfect for us. Hotel-More than adequate, large rooms well equipped bathoroom, beds a bit snall and not that comfy but overall the rooms were fine. Although if possible get one on the back of the hotel there is a bit of noise from the fun park over the road. We were B&B, breakfasts were Ok, food quality was good but a bit limited for choice although they did have porridge which suited me and is unusual for foreign hotels Pool, Bar, reception, were all fine and the hotel shuttle bus to and from the old town and the beach was great

As with all other reviews on the Montechoro Hotel would have to agree with the dated decor in the bedrooms, however the colour of the carpet was of very little significance, especially when considered against the massive size of the room. For 2 people the size of the room was unbelievable - it would have slept 4 easily and possibly more. The bathroom was also huge with 2 sinks.

Staff in the hotel were generally helpful and friendly and we had no complaints whatsoever with the hotel. They even give you the use of a courtesy room on the day that you leave. Maid service was great - every day and never interrupted when in the room.

Thomas Cook were not so good - the rep was worse than useless - at our welcome meeting she decided that as there were only a few of us she wouldn't bother going through the whole meeting! She also didn't turn up on her scheduled visit and we had to call another rep in to book excursions. She was seen however on her day off enjoying the pool!!

The Montechoro strip was very good - not as tacky as we had thought it would be. Restaurants and cafes were fantastic - we didn't have a bad meal at all and ate out every night as hotel was bed and breakfast. A quick note on the breakfast as it seems to be slated in quite a few reviews - there was everything you could possibly ask for, with tea, coffee, juice, cooked breakfast, 4 different types of cereal, varied breads, jam etc., even porridge!

On food, of particular note were Nosolo Italia cafe - fantastic service and huge portions. Also, huge portions and the best Caesar salad I have ever had was the American Diner.

The Sizzling Stone is easily the best restaurant (if you're an avid carnivore!) and is a definite recommendation - but gets very busy.

The Koala Garden was disappointing - nothing particularly Australian - Neighbours theme-tune playing - not particularly authentic! and a huge line in over-priced ";Aussie"; tat.

The Chinese in the little square just behind Asian Dreams was fantastic value and great food - 3 courses with a drink (including alcoholic drinks) for less than 10 euro - and the manager was very friendly and polite.

Cocktails were great - in particular Ricks Bar - also came with a huge amount of fruit - so dessert and cocktail in one!

Weather was fantastic after a couple of hours rain on the Sunday, by 11am it was clear and sunny. Mid 20's for the whole week with a fantastic breeze to keep you cool when sunbathing. On the downside a couple of nights it felt very cold and you really needed a jacket.

Would definitely recommend Montechoro - and in particular the Montechoro Hotel.

Just back from a week at the Montechoro, Hotel very nice but a little dated. Rooms and all other areas spotlessly clean, Stayed on a BandB basis, breakfast very good, especially if you are up early as it turns into a works canteen atmosphere a bit later.

All in all an enjoyable week apart from the weather which was very mixed. Wished we had taken warm coats.

The Hotel Montechoro is a lovely hotel. The rooms are spacious, the pool area is nice but the breakfast was not too good.

There is a lot to choose from, cereal, toast, bean, fried eggs, streaky bacon and hot dog sausages.

However, we didn't find it to our taste so we ate breakfast at 'Erins Isle', an Irsh bar accross from the hotel.

We ate out in many restaurants during our holiday. The best by far was an Italian restaurant named 'Puccinni's', it is in the square behind Erins Isle. I highly recommend the steak which you cook yourself on a sizzling platter.

Another restaurant that we found to be quite a surprise was a Chinese called something like 'Lung Fung' it is in a square on the left hand side of the strip as you walk down from the hotel. Far beeter than the Asian Dreams restaurant next door.

However most of the restaurants we ate in were lovely with the exception of Senior Frogs, yuk.

Drinking wise, there are many bars but no clubs.

We found Cafe del Mar to be very lively most nights, along with Jambo city but the best bars are at the bottom of the strip by the beach. Far more lively with a younger crowd.

We visited the old town which is lovely for a few hours but is quite boring!

The 'Aqua Park' is a must 40 Euro for entrance and transport for 2. It isnt the biggest or best waterpark i've visited abroad but is a good day out.

There is lots of other days out available and lads of watersports on the beach.

The resort is great for couples but definately not for a group of mates. It's no comparison to Ibiza or Ayia Napa.

The hotel was lovely but the maids are so annoying. The point of a do not disturb sign is not to disturb, however, the maids openly ignore it or take it off the door and ome in anyway!

Also to get to the strip, come out of the hotel and turn right down the hill, its just around the corner!

Just back from a superb fortnight in the Algarve. Hotel Montechoro was excellent. We were BandB and the breakfast was very good. The swimming pool was clean and it was always possible to get a lounger. Also entertainment team provided water polo and water basketball on week days. Snacks and drinks are available from the pool bar. Another advantage was that there were very few children (great for those who can't be bothered with screaming kids on holiday!)

Weather was very hot (too hot almost, ranging from 25-30 degrees) with only one day of rain.

We recommend that you go to the restaurant on the 10th floor for a romantic dinner as the food was exquisite. They'll come and cook it for you at your table.

One downside of the hotel (relevant only to beach lovers) was its distance from the beach. However, the hotel runs a free bus service on an hourly-ish basis during the day which takes you right down to the beach and back if you want.

The resort itself was ok, although I felt that I could have been in any tourist resort as it was very commercial. Most of the restaurants serve similar kinds of european food at varying prices. The American Diner on the strip was good value as their salads were huge and their 100% beef burgers were really tasty too. If you want a traditionally potuguese restaurant then go to Casa Velha which is near the globe roundabout beside a chinese restaurant. Prices were very reasonable there.

What more can I say? We would definitely go back.

we have just arrived back from our stay at the hotel montechoro.

There were many negative comments about this hotel on this site we did not find this at all.The rooms were very spacious and cleaned daily and fresh towels daily. The swimming pool was lovely and only about 4 foot right across the pool so for adults who do not like swimming but like to paddle to cool off it was ok.The sun bed situation was the same as most hotels now you had to be down by 8am to get a bed. There was poolside activities for adults and the kiddies.

We stayed half board at the Montechoro breakfast consisted of cooked or continental evening meal there were three choices of meat courses one pasta dish and salad. The food was allright we found there was always a choice that we liked. On Wednesday night there was a barbecue this also had entertainment. The Montechoro has a free bus service that runs frequently to the beach and the old town this is an excellent service. The Montechoro is at the top of the strip it is just far enough away so you do not hear all the noise, but near enough to walk to the strip. The strip is about a mile long it consists of bars, shops, cafes and amusements there is something for everybody here .

The Old Town is lovely its back streets are quaint lots of shops and in the square there are entertainers We had a lovely holiday and will return

The hotel is very clean and the staff helpful rooms have a double bed and single which is a good idea towel changed daily and room cleaned also bedding changed every two days.

lots of places to eat on the strip but the best we found is called SILK all the staff were fun and friendly they even sang happy birthday and presented a cake to my husband on his birthday there is no hurry to rush you out even when busy laetitia and richardo are very happy to change the meals to suit your taste.
we also found that you did not have to have chips with everything and also got vegetables with your meal .

The old town is under construction at the moment and the pool at the hotel is nearly finish but we used the hotels other pool across the road you can also book the apartments across the road from the hotel [club 99] which we have stayed in and are great if you prefer more home comforts

After reading some of the reviews on the hotel montechoro we were a little unsure of what to expect(we only read reviews after booking). Im pleased to say that upon our arrival we were more than impressed with the hotel.

The rooms were very spacious and more importantly they were immaculate! Most of the staff were very welcoming and helpful(apart from receptionists). We found the breakfasts to be suitable to everybodys needs, they try to cater for all tastes and were more than edible. The hotel is situated in an ideal spot which is at the top of the strip and just across from erins isle where we visited every day as the staff there are very hospitable. We would not hesitate on recommending(and returning ourselves) the hotel montechoro to anybody. As we left, the work around the main pool was almost completed but certainly would not put people off visiting the hotel (as my son spent the whole week of our holiday in the pool).

The hotel montechoro most definately deserves its 4*.

I had read the previous reviews on your site and went to the hotel montechoro thinking the worst, well what can i say. The hotel was excellent, location was excellent at the top end of the strip it was only a short walk to the bars and restaurants so no need for taxi's etc. The hotel is so clean, the maids cleaned the rooms and replaced towels on a daily basis.

On our first night we headed into the old town, what a disappointment that was, it is under major construction and basically there is nothing there, we got a taxi straight back to the strip and finished our evening off there. So I wouldnt recomend that you attempt this until the construction work is over.

We went for breakfast at the hotel each morning and the food was fine, there was plenty of choice and something for everyone.

Whilst there is construction work going on at the hotel pool, this caused us no distruption at all and talking to other guests who had stayed at the hotel previously they commented on how much better the pool area was this year. It was my nephew's first time abroad and he absolutely loved the place, the hotel ran a kids club, monday to friday mornings which was great for the kids. Dont think the aqua-aerobics went down too well, as during the week that we were there i think only a handful of people attempted this. It will be great when the kids pool is finished although i cant see that happening for the next couple of months.

There are some great bars and restuarants along the strip, in particular we enjoyed La Bamba (down the end of the strip near matts bar)and Liza's pasta and pizza.

Watch out for the beggers along the strip, there must have been a group of about 15 off them out every afternoon and every evening, this got a bit of a pain towards the end of the holiday.

The hotel run a bus service to the beach every hour from 9.30am onwards returning to the hotel at 20 mins to the hour, this is perfect. Although its not too far to walk to the beach, in the heat the bus was a far better option.

I cant rave enough about the hotel, we enjoyed it so much so that we are looking to book again now for next June.

Our hotel was situated right at the top for the long strip which is on a slight incline. It was immaculate with all rooms and corridors carpeted so you couldn't hear the other guests walking about like you do in many hotels. The room was one of the biggest we have ever stayed in with plenty of storage space. The maids came in every day but always when we were out, never knocking us out of bed early on a morning in order to clean the room like they do in some hotels. Food was ok, always about 4 choices in addition to a salad bar. I must say that the food got better as the week went on because a lot more English came in so they catered more for us. The beach is about 30 minutes stroll away but the hotel runs a mini bus which leaves for the beach or the old town several times a day.

Dont go to the old town this summer, but if you do dont wear anything decent, they've dug it all up (and we mean all of it). One downside to the hotel was the fact that the swimming pool area was getting refurbished and couldn't be used (you could use the pool at club 99 over the road), people using the sun terrace next to the pool were getting covered with brick dust. Work on this was behind schedule and although it should of been finished by May work had just started when we were there mid April. The workmen didn't seem to make much progress in that week and we dont think the pool area will be finished before July.

Now for the resort. Lovely and clean but not a lot of atmosphere and not a lot to do we thought, although to be fare this may of been that it was early in the season, a week was enough for us. Every bar we went into had a large TV screen (our pet hate) showing Sport or Comedy such as Peter Kaye at the Albert Hall or someplace, we do like him but watch TV at home and prefer not to when on holiday. Every one to their own I suppose but we like to meet people and have a good time when on holiday, not sat transfixed to a TV screen like a Zombi. Anyway we found the irish bar (Erins Isle) at the top of the strip suited us just fine and would recommend it to anyone who likes live entertainment and likes to mix with others.

In summary, we had a good holiday but found the resort a little boring and wouldn't hurry to go back.

We have just arrived home from a week in the Algarve. It was the first time we had been here and we found it to be everything we hoped it would be, if not more.

First off, the hotel was situated in the perfect position, right at the top of the Montechoro strip (the main strip in Albfeira). The strip is kind of split in two halfs by a giant zebra crossing around half way down, the top half being the slightly more quiet half, and more family orientated, while the bottom half did tend to get quite noisy with bars etc.
The hotel inside was very well presented and looked as you would expect a normal 4* hotel to be, also reception staff were very helpful at all times.

We were rather disappointed with the room as when we first entered the it we found two single beds (which normally we wouldnt mind as we would just push together to make a double)separated by a large bedside table screwed to the wall, making it impossible to push beds together. Never mind though, we had a lovely view from the balcony and all in all rooms were very clean and spacious.

The room maids cleaned rooms every day and left clean towels - very good service there.
The only thing we found to be quite annoying is that with us staying in a hotel we had no fridge to keep water etc in and the water in the supermarkets werent kept in fridges either, so the only time we had a cold drink was when we went to a bar and bought one (quite annoying in the blistering heat).
We didnt find the food too impressive at the hotel, and even though we were half board, we only had breakfast twice during our stay. We found that there wasnt much choice, and was also hard to find a seat which had been cleaned up after the previous people had been in. This wasnt too much of a problem for us as we were very happy with the amount of choice along the whole strip, we were spoiled for choice for breakfast and evening meals, also snacks and ice creams in between.

There is one place we MUST recommend, a restaurant called 'Martinique'.
Martinique is situated right at the very top of the strip, almost straight across the road from the hotel.
The prices arent extremely cheap, we paid 9euro for chicken piri piri (one of the speciality dishes over there) and approx 15euro for a steak.
We could not speak highly enough of this place, you may well pay a little extra, but you certainly get your moneys worth. The portion sizes are very generous, the waiters/waiteress' are extremely nice, and we could not fault the food. Not one piece of fat on the steak or chicken, cooked the way you ask for it, and the restaurant itself is absolutely spotless, very clean and nicely decorated with terraced gardens so you can either sit inside or out.
We were so impressed by this place we went back on our last night, as we thought it may have just been a one off that everything was perfect... but yet again we got the same excellent service and delicious food. Definately worth a visit!

Another place we should mention is called the Koala Garden. It is situated along one of the back streets from the main strip, but fantastic if you want to try some real Australian cuisine - they specialise in grilled crocodile fillet, ostrich fillet and kangaroo fillet.

We dont really have any major complaints at all, and all in all we had a fantastic holiday, we'd definately visit Albufeira again, but maybe next time try apartments.
10/10.

Monte - SSSSHHH - orro is how to say it. A 4-star hotel in most ways justifiably so rated, but what happened to the heat? Turned off, that is what, in November! Even changing our rooms no better. Wore outdoor coat in 10th-floor luxury diningroom [a passable buffet, outrageously costly wine, no you can't save the rest of the bottle to the next meal either]. Wore British winterweight anorak in bedroom. Hotel had one point eight per cent room occupancy, under three dozen guests to over 1000 rooms, all fitted with large proper double beds and one ditto single.

Resort shut up tighter than Rhyl on a winter weekend. Even Erin's Isle (open all the year, over 50 staff is the website claim] had one staff, no customers, and finally pout up its shutters for the winter the day after we arrived. So-called ";Strip"; empty, mostly closed down, a few open but nobody within. Don't go to the Algarve between end of September and about mid-May, it is bleaker than Skegness in January and emptier than Bognor out of season. And it is C-O-L-D

We expected at least to be warm in a nominally good 4-star. We froze. Most of it is closed off for the winter. The bored staff are willing, pleasant, and well-trained. Portuguese Director of Algarve Tourism should go to Magalluf, Plama Nova, Tenerife's Playa de las Americas, find out how they successfully cope with the winter. Entertainment? Never heard of it. Even a 1-star boarding house in Blackpool heats its guests' rooms!

Why did we book this 11-night break? We now wonder. Algarve out-of-season is only for masochists. And it is expensive. The food is hardly Portuguese, most restaurants and certainly the one in the Hotel Montechorro are beaten hands down by the average British pub-grub and we shall never be visiting Purtugal again --- at any time of the year. Disappointed? You bet. Moira and Bruce +++

Agreed with much of previous reviewer. Large family rooms, cleaned regularly. However, definitely not a 4 star rate by english/irish standards. Apart from impressive reception, remainder of hotel shabby and in need of updating.

Hotel Staff all very helpful and friendly. No sunbeds available after 8.30am - inadequate supply for amount of residents. However Montechoro owned pool with bar etc (available to hotel residents) less than 5 mins walk opposite hotel, sunbeds in plentiful supply and much quieter and more enjoyable. Queues for hotel lifts at busy periods. Hotel did provide buses for Old Town and Beach and whilst we were successful and got on, many people did not, again at busy periods. Were not successful on return bus from beach but as only one 10 year old child and two adults, walk back was more than manageable. Aquapark, water park in region, very enjoyable for outing. Definitely recommend Martinique restaurant very close to hotel, for portugese food and Jing du chinese restaurant towards far end of strip, excellent. Would return to Algarve but not Albufeira and not hotel. Hi prolifertion of english and irish bars, and would have welcomed 'getting away' from same. Full English Breakfasts offered everywhere you looked!

However, excellent area for keeping up to date with premiership football - shown in most bars!
