Going to The Azores was a bit of an unknown holiday but it turned out to be highly successful and exceeded our wildest dreams due to the hotel owners, Nick and Chris. Without doubt Sunvil have a winner in this micro hotel: individual pampering due to only having a maximun of 8 guests in 4 rooms. Chris, Nick, and their assistant Gilda produce the best food on the island including large varied and delightful breakfasts and occasional evening meals. They subtely find out about the guests to help advise over restaurants, activities, walks, drives etc. It is skillfully done and we felt well-cared for and happy.
The other key part to the success of this holiday are the other guests and we enjoyed and relished meeting our comrades at this extraordinary hotel - Chris and Derek, Katie and Peter, Valerie and David were special and contributed to our experience through their humour, travel stories and lives.
The island has so much to offer through walks, whale-watching (very successful), wild life and flora that it is a special place. It is still largely untouched by tourism which is its attraction. It was good to drive around and the roads are sound yet often free of other cars - a welcome relief these days.
Do try the Azores and if you like meeting people and enjoy an individual and unique service do try and get into Quinto do Mar, but please leave room for us.
My only criticism of the island is that the cuisine was not great but we found some OK places - Praia cafe in Villa Franco, White Shark,O Forno and another one in Ribeira Quente owned by Sea Watch. Others had favourites in Lagoa. Best was the wonderful hotel which I wish we could take with us on our travels to be sure of such a classy yet fun joint.
