Madeira is an absolutely beautiful island with very rugged scenery in the mountains. We chose to stay in Funchal as we wanted the variety of the bars during the evening and shops during the daytime. The cable car trip to Monte was breathtaking, so were the Tropical gardens at the top. A word of warning to any guests with walking difficluties though, do not be put off visiting Monte Tropical Gardens, as there is a golf buggy type vehicle that could take you to the bottom and back up again for a couple of euros. It would be such a shame to miss this little piece of paradise. Take a taxi to the East or West coast is my best advice, as you will get to see more of the marvellous scenery without having 50 or so other tourists trying to take photo's at the same time, had you gone on an organised coach trip.It is cheaper too, if there are 3 or so of you. You cannot go home from Madeira without sampling the lovely wine which is made on the island. We stumbled upon a great wine shop on our last day, where the owner was only to happy to let us try a few before we purchased. There are some fabulous hotels in Funchal, but one in particular houses a Casino. We saw the Cabaret show, involving the cast performing song and dance routines from the 50's up to the present date. Extremely entertaining for an hour or so, then you can hit the roulette tables or gaming machines if you wish to, in the Casino downstairs. We had great fun that night, and surprisingly the drinks were not expensive in the Casino Bar either. For any real Beatles Fans, the boat they all used to own during the 60's is located in Funchal. We felt it was quite nostalgic and enjoyed a few cocktails aboard her. Madeira is a hilly island however with one of my party having walking difficulties we were not put off visiting, as we did not need to worry about getting around, reasonably priced taxi's were available everywhere in Funchal. Our only fear is that Funchal in particular may be at risk of becoming over-developed, so go and visit, before it is spoilt.

We stayed for 5 days. Flew with Easy Jet for less than £125. hotel florasol £25 per night, so very reasonable, booked with rooms.net.com. Weather was brilliant - late July/early Aug. Enjoyed everything we did. Took yellow taxi round west side of island. Brilliant driver, gave us lots of information, knew every flower and tree, stayed as long as we wanted at each stop. Point Moriz brilliant for swimming in rock pools. Cable car to Tropical gardens, stunning. Tobbagon down hair-raising but brill.Trip on catamaran to see dolphins, saw loads, stopped for swim and snorkel, brill. Yellow taxi to Nun's valley, breathtaking. Madeira was stunning, especially flowers. Recommend Moby Dick restaurant, not brilliant outlook but food wonderful. Best steaks we ever had. Only down side, it is mostly hilly and very steep in places so restrictive for some people. Also we booked airport transfer with low cost transfer, the driver tried to tell us that the return fare we had booked was only one way, leading to a debate outside our hotel. didnt pay in advance, so just paid half, then other half on return. Overall it was a lovely,5 day break, Madeira is stunning and we did most of what we wanted to do in that time. People were quite friendly and helpful, prices reasonable. Would be nice to have a bit of entertainment of an evening.
Booked this hotel through Rooms.net.com. It was £25 per night for bed and breakfast late July/early August. Very good value for the price. Studio rooms included a fridge, good for cold drinks as weather very hot. Rooms were adequate though a bit dated. Brea...
