"Quinta São Gonçalo"
Overall Hotel Rating:
Nice old manor house set in its own grounds with gated entrance, and more of a family bed and breakfast place than a hotel with many facilities. Pleasant views over sea and towards Funchal. Not many other hotels in same area which seemed largely residential. House was about 20 minutes walk into Funchal, quicker on the way into town as it was downhill. Hotel had 4 big rooms. We stayed in the cheaper room with sea view and were perfectly happy. Breakfasts were basic (cereals, fruit, breads, jams, coffee) and very filling. First day we didn't need to eat anything else for the whole day, but probably over-indulged. Although the hotel has no restaurant they cooked us a meal for our first evening, and would have cooked again if we had wanted it. Hotel owner was very friendly and helped us sort out a clutch problem with our car on our first day. She's a lovely character and although doesn't live in the hotel, was always chatting to us in the morning at breakfast. Would love to come here again. This is more for couples than children.
