Hotel is an old coaching Inn, turned into a modern and impressive 4*+ hotel (part of Relais and Chateaux group).
Staff could not be more welcoming or helpful, even walking to Hotels private car park (about 400 yards) and carrying very heavy bags back to reception upon arrival. Top marks.
Rooms are very clean, mix of old stone walls and antique look furniture - aircon and electrics operated by key in wall-slot, satellite TV inc. Eurosport (most important as we were there for Euro 2004!).
Restaurant small but well-laid out so you don't feel cramped up to other diners, breakfasts OK but could have done with more choice on the hot buffet - waiters excellent and very attentive while still unobtrusive.
Resort is compact, easily walkable - several nice restaurants, would recommend Dolce Vita for pizza and Grande Muralha for chinese - even if one of the waiters does look like the bloke off C4s Banzai.
Lots of nice pavement cafe's for watching the world go by - bit hectic one night we were there, when Portugal knocked England out of the 1/4 finals :-( but everyone is remarkably friendly and laid back.
If you like Bingo, the Castelo Velho bingo hall is on the seafront - good for drinks too, got free Port from the owner on our third visit.
Nice cool shopping centre next to Hotel - has everything you would possibly need, and a few things you won't, like brazilian themed fast food.
Walked up to the Igreja de Santa Luzia - very steep - and disconcerting monk chants being blasted out of speakers that could be heard for about 3 miles! Fabulous views though.
Worth hiring a car - some lovely beaches to the north, towards the Spanish border - also only 1.5hrs to Porto which is well worth a visit.
All in all, an excellent town and hotel to stay in if you are considering visiting the Minho region of Portugal.
